I have an idea regarding the stuff. Consider this “zen capitalism.” Sign the unique one of a kind items and auction them to Filmcast listeners. Let the multitudes of us take on your burden. Then throw a big going away event where we would come get them.

Nathaniel St. Clair

I find this fascinating and am glad you both are taking us on this journey with you. I know you touched on this a bit, but you both have talked about how important it is to have a strong community around you, especially now, with our current fascist administration and the evolving climate crisis, and an ongoing Covid pandemic, and while I totally understand wanting to get far away from this country, you two have seemed to built a uniquely strong community here. Something I’ve honestly been envious of. Close dependable friends, close dependable family, and what seems like a lot of career connections and opportunities. It would be interesting, but maybe too personal, to hear how much you’ve had to wrestle with leaving that, and how your community has reacted to your decision to move. No worries if you don’t feel comfortable sharing much about it. It’s just the thing I know I would struggle with the most if chose expat life, and I don’t think I’ve even got that great of a community around me. lol. Great episode!

Great conversation! Thank you, David. I'm sure you've thought of this, but I haven't seen you mention it. Isn't Vancouver, Canada, the obvious place to move to? It leaves you close to family and friends, and citizenship is as easy as Portugal's.

Eric Wilson

You mentioned Portugal’s high taxes and timing the move based on that — have you looked into whether you qualify for the NHR 2.0 scheme, IFICI? I think you might. Also curious which of the several visa types you settled on.

Joy o Napping

We have! IFICI is only in its first tax year right now and we are waiting for the dust to settle a bit from their tax season ending soon. But I have attended a webinar about it and think we miiiight qualify. I’m also not opposed to paying taxes to support a society with good public safety, public health, education, etc.!

What an interesting episode. You guys sound like you’ve done your research and are as prepared as one can be. As someone that has done several international moves, I can sympathize with the task ahead and how difficult some things can be, like getting rid of all your old stuff. It’s hard and it sucks, but once you finish you feel like a giant weight has been lifted off you. The one advice I can give you guys is not take big furniture or appliances with you. Those are all made to standard sizes which are likely to be different in the USA than in Europe. One more thing about the car. In some countries (and I’m not sure about Portugal) manual transmission cars are the most common. If you don’t know how to drive one, maybe rent one in the US and learn with time. All the best to both of you.

Just wanted to add one more thing about the Apple account. I too have a US AppleID that I have kept for almost 20 years since I last lived in the US, never had a problem. Though admittedly I’ve never had to deal with things like claiming an apple care claim (but can buy AppleCare no problem). Just make sure you keep a valid US method of payment and you will be able to keep your account working. AppleTV doesn’t even require a VPN to work where I’m currently living. And luckily all the services that are not available where I am, work with a VPN and I can pay the subscription through the Appstore.
