We got some great feedback from our last attempt at this so we're going to try again, this time with video! (The audio from this video has also been included in our podcast feed).

In this video, David chats with @joyofnapping about five tiktoks/videos that defined the week. Topics include:

Whether to use fork or spoon to eat rice

The magic of salt

The KSI Blackface Labubu Lady

The woman crashing out over her psychiatrist

Chatbots can go into a delusional spiral

An unhinged NYC Apartment tour

Enjoy!

favorite new thing! my tik tok is mostly hamilton women climbing out of windows, glided age reactions..and museums showing all their horse paintings to that horse song...so this helps keep me in the loop

Iain

You guys look so cute in the same outfit 😝 Joy looks good and healthy! 😀

I missed the last one so this format is new to me. Quite a roller coaster. Went from "haha that was funny" to "social media is a panopticon of torment and no human should be able to talk to this many people at once" and back to funny. What a journey.

Happy to report our TikTok algorithms have a lot of crossover.

I deleted the TikTok app and watching Tiktoks on desktop is obviously a terrible experience, so I am extremely out of the loop lately haha. Thank you for this service 🫡

With all due respect, Joy is younger and prettier than I thought (I have no idea why I thought that to be honest tho)!

Where I agree with Joy (who looks luminously healthy here!) is that I’m less interested in what is deemed “culturally relevant” or currently riding the zeitgeist wave, as I am in learning what Dave personally finds interesting or cool or funny at any given time. More salt and unhinged apartment tours, less Labubu and crashing out. Also: I think Devindra has mentioned on the pod how prescient Neil Postman was in writing about how technology shapes public discourse. I recommend as relevant to all of this Postman’s book Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology. And this little essay (from 1998!) “Five Things We Need to Know About Technological Change” is kind of amazing and still resonates in this TikTok era: https://web.cs.ucdavis.edu/~rogaway/classes/188/materials/postman.pdf

I have laughed at this series but they are EXTREMELY mean and I think I’d try to stay away from that type of stuff in this series

David Chen

Thx for the rec! I can assure you that any video that is in this series is one I find extremely funny or interesting

When the rice is in a bowl, it's almost impossible to get the last few grains of rice with a fork so there will always be a few grains left at the bottom. The prongs of the fork scraping against the ceramic can also be very grating. Oftentimes, toward the end, the fork is just pushing the rice around rather than picking it up. Whereas with a spoon, bc of the rounded convex edge, it can make contact with the bowl at any point, depending on how you rotate it, meaning you are able to grab every last grain of rice, allowing for a clean bowl.

David Chen explains the internet to the olds is a great concept.

Dave, you should do an interview with Ed Zitron about AI. He’s been a hater since the very beginning, and for very good reasons.

Andy Sherwood

Definitely keep this going, it’s great!

Tami Lefko

I agree with Joy - that NY apartment was much better than many I’ve seen (with temporary walls to create separate rooms, etc). Nothing was really bad except the shower.

Gregg D.

Very much enjoying this series, as someone who cannot be arsed to deal with TikTok on a regular basis but enjoys internet weirdery.

God, I freaking loved this. Like most of your audience I'd assume, I mostly consume your content through the audio RSS feed but I made an effort to come watch the video to see what I missed. I still think it works great with just the audio. I'm a TikTok fiend and I was aware of the 2 major viral videos, but it was still wonderful to hear both yours and Joy's descriptions/reactions. Keep them coming please!

just dropping in to say how much I miss this series! looking forward to the next one
