I’ve been following your travails moving to Portugal for a while now and it’s been such a great thing. I will say this from my perspective. I moved from San Francisco to Montreal, leaving family friends and everything I knew. Then Montreal to Washington DC where I am now. I hated the first year and felt homesick and compared everything to how it was where I left. The second year I started warming up. After two years, it became my new home that I didn’t want to leave. Two years. That’s what it took each time for me living in a new place each time. I know anywhere else I move to, it’ll take two years to settle and see how I truly feel about the place. I didn’t think it’d happen in DC and I missed Montreal so much. But again, I started warming up to DC after the first year. And now I don’t want to leave this city. It sounds like a year or two may be a long shot for you and Joy. Which I totally understand. I’ve been there, brother. Just my one cent. Keep up the great work and I’ll be listening.

"Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!" Absolutely insane

"obligation is a prison" hits so hard 🤣 love this conversation, guys

I've been waiting for this one! Fantastic conversation y'all. "Mind prison" is such a good way to frame it, Davis Cho, given how many of the expat files tended to focus around the fear and uncertainty of the future. Fear is the mind killer! Also, curious what brand of air fryer you wound up with, Dave Chen, and if you did any reviews or research before or during the purchase, and if such a thing is as easily accessible with brands in Portugal as it is in the U.S.

David Chen

Hard to do research for sure! The brand is moulinex. I got it because the person helping us at Worten said he uses this brand himself

I have a similar experience. Its usually taken me 1-2 years (sometimes more) to feel at home in a new city/country. I’ve learned to be patient with the resettlement process.

I really wanted to interrupt during this episode! I definitely think three months is too short to get a full living somewhere experience. It took me a long time after moving from the UK to Sweden to change where I was referring to as "home". And I doubt the situations that drove this move will have changed in the US in that timeframe. I do get how Portugal's immigrations rule changes will have dented your enthusiasm though. But D.Cho was spot on - don't waste so much of Europe being on your de facto doorstep. As a double patreon, I definitely will be understanding of the occasional week of Dev and Jeff being a filmcase duo. And look forward to a "Expat files - from Paris" etc episode. I'd be happy to host you if you want to come to the far north! Heck, I'd be happy to have a long weekend in Lisbon next year and buy you two dinner! I'm sure I'm not alone... Give the change-blues some time, and don't be hasty!

Have you heard of The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci? - not all minds are prisons ;)
