I am so stoked to see y'all posting again so soon. I just know my body would, as well, be destroyed after all that walking 🤭🤣 great episode

Had no idea that Lisbon was so hilly, thanks for the tip. I find those kind of Michelin star long dinners to be not very accessible for my tastes - or a way I want to spend my time - I like high quality food - but not the teeny dishes on small plates that are a bite. Especially dishes that have "foam" in them ;) Lastly - camaraderie among ex-pats - when we were living in Beijing - which we knew would be 1.5 to 3 years - we found great friendships with those in the same situation - BECAUSE we were in the same situation. We are still good friends with many of those people after repatriating. So I do think that the foreigners can lead to good friendships - at least it did 10+ years ago. I know your guys situation is different.

I am going to Lisbon for work in January so this was very instructive… not a big walker. I’m going to stay next to my office 😂

This was such an illustrative episode about the differences between Joy and Dave, and how difficult it can be for Americans to adjust to living abroad. We are planning a trip to Portugal in February, so I’m excited to report back in the comments, how it went! You guys are awesome! Thank you for these wonderful listens.

Question for Joy or David: Have you guys met any queer folks there? It will be an interesting thing to see what the LGBTQ community is like out there.

Joy o Napping

I think Lisbon in particular is very popular for LGBTQ tourists. As for folks who actually live here, I have met one young woman (daughter of someone I know). She is half Asian, half Black and seems to be living her best life. Has been here for almost 10 years.

Connor Rock

Thank you, Joy! That is super helpful! We’re excited to put together a list of things we have to scout out when we’re there, and finding out more about the LGBTQ community there is one of top things on our list.

What happens if Dave takes a red eye. Does he not eat for the entire day before ?!? Did he not eat any food on the business class flight over ?!?!

Another great episode. Note Air Fryers were invented by the (ex-)Dutch company Philips. I'm 100% behind David with not eating when I'm traveling, not due to nerves, but wanting to taste some new food when I arrive. For me, living in Belgium, my big surprise is how hard it is to find bed sheets, pillows, etc that doesn't drive me crazy. No buttons to close duvet covers. Square pillows.

David Chen

I basically never take red eyes! I did eat on the way over but that was an exception because the flight was so long

Hi Dave and Joy: I’m really enjoying these conversations. I relate to them a lot being an immigrant to the US myself and having been an “ex pat” Spain/Austria for a time. This was over 10 years ago so I wonder how much things have changed since then. Also having been in Lisbon back in 2008, I have vivid memories of walking on those very small sidewalks in the rain. It sounds like your guys are learning a lot. Enjoy the journey ❤️

The line "David has a method for walking" absolutely sent me. Love this series!

Between the backwards walking and not eating while traveling, I feel like I unlocked some major understanding about David in this episode.
