Another fantastic, fascinating episode! As a chronic complainer and someone who values forthrightness, apology, responsibility, and accountability—I don’t think Portugal sounds like a great fit for me, personally haha! I’m so curious what raising kids is like in this culture; teaching my kids to be accountable and responsible and apologize when needed is paramount. I love this series and following your journey! (And for what it’s worth, I think David DID display the “action” and willingness to do what’s necessary, and Joy, you deserve respect no matter where you are just for being a human being! Hearing you check yourself for just laughing freely made me sad! But also, I totally understand as someone who attempts to match and observe wherever I am.)

Incredible episode. Thanks for sharing these experiences.

FWIW, Dave, I don't think you were overreacting or going off the rails based in this episode regarding the EZ Pass debacle. I would've been frustrated and angry at the situation, especially as someone who values appearing competent and not being a burden, as you discussed in the previous episode. I've deeply appreciated these recent episodes that dig into the meat and bones of moving abroad (i.e., experiences and emotions). My husband and I have discussed moving to Canada because I have a presumably easy pathway as a registered nurse; however, neither of us handle change well for various reasons and we have a lot of conflicting thoughts/feelings around it (e.g., fleeing vs. staying to "fight," leaving behind family, etc.). This podcast series has helped provoke and guide discussion with my husband, like what is brought up at the end of this episode—is life abroad better or just different? Thank you both for sharing so openly!

Sorry to hear how you were feeling, Dave, but this is how you get the good content! Loving the podcast series ❤️

I concur with everyone’s comments. These are great life lessons for how to integrate into another culture. Just out of curiosity, have you had a chance to experience egg tarts in Portugal? Really curious as I was just in Hong Kong and there’s a growing debate about whether HK style or Portuguese style egg tarts are better.

Joy's description of her turning on the charm reminds me of Elaine Benes trying to charm the Soup Nazi. Haha

Not to be a traitor to my people but…. I like the Portuguese one more. By a lot 😱
