Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, the Daves discuss:

How DChen is adjusting to Portugal

Video podcasts

Comparing ourselves to our contemporaries

Reflecting on the long scope of our lives and careers

Grace

As someone who rented for almost my entire life and moved every year on average, it is a common feeling to not want to set up something just to rebuild it. I've heard this before from many people in the same situation. You are not alone!

David Cho

Dave's usually with his wife Joy O'Napping, he's almost never alone!

David Chen

yeah but was definitely alone on this podcast, so thanks for the solidarity grace!

David Cho

It's brave how you persevere

Carole M

Really great conversation especially at the end, appreciate these reflections a lot

Great discussion — I’d love to dismiss it, but the demand for video is huge in music for discovery and it’s a real struggle for those of us that only care about the audio. Seems like clips are the only reliable form of discovery these days. Maybe the same is happening with podcasts.

Brad Sucks

Maybe if David Cho ever got his noisy microphone setup stable and had to redo it, he’d understand our pain (boom goes the dynamite)

As a big fan of Dave and his endeavours, and as an expat myself (Canadian in the Netherlands), the first section of this episode was a bit of a hard listen.

David Chen

Appreciate the feedback Marc. I was worried that it would come off as too negative. I’m trying to keep my reflections on this journey balanced but I may not always hit the right tone. Still working on it and appreciate you sticking with me.

Marc

Please keep doing what you're doing. I may not always agree, but I appreciate your takes on things and will, of course, continue to support.

Personally, whenever a podcast begins to offer a video version on Youtube, I shift over and consume exclusively the video version. I may only be watching 5% of the time, but when the hosts are laughing or some physical bit happens, being able to steal a glance is so useful, plus the visual context helps my mind construct what I am listening to the other 95% of the time. i really dislike it when the video version isn't the full version, because it makes me jump between platforms to consume the most complete version of the content, usually needing to scrub to find my place in the audio after watching the incomplete video, which often makes me fall off of a podcast all together. The one issue is that Youtube doesnt offer the skip forward/backward, it just has the previous/next. This and the not needing to bounce between apps are two real reasons I may change to apple video podcasts. Also, I think it's wild that Netflix is also jumping into podcasts in a big way.
