Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, the Daves discuss:

How DChen is feeling about his work

Ethical Use of AI

Why All Criticism Is Compromised (per The Christophers)

DCho is spot on in terms of measuring creator work. It’s a different time now than it was even weeks ago. The only metrics that matter are “am I holding my audience” and “ideally incrementally increasing.” But the only determination of success: do I like the impact I’m having. Over-achievement in immigrant cultures has been the expectation for so long, it’s hard to know if it’s internally coming from the individual or from ancestral trauma. But DChen, you’ve made a real impact. The Chenthusiast Army is strong. And that’s all you doing the weird things you do, your thoughtfulness, and grace. There’s no analytic for that. Mr. Beast wishes people liked him as much as we like you.

Brb, sending this to Doug Collider Guy.

Seconding DCho that your output has been excellent and you should take a lot of pride in that. I look forward to every episode even though I don't watch most of the shows & movies. But very similar feelings in the independent music space over here re: clips, algorithm, growth and AI. It feels like there's not much point releasing songs these days without many, many clips to post and I've struggled with getting that going. And also personally find that sort of content kind of exhausting and annoying to consume which probably isn't helping.

This may be the ultimate Dave on Dave episode title

Regarding the clippability topic- I totally understand the business side of it and the desire to use short form video to promote your work- but as a long-time listener, what I value most about your work across all podcasts and platforms is the depth of consideration and thought that goes into your commentary and analysis. It's not easy to clip that so I understand your struggle.

This is a real time comment. If WW84 comes into the conversation, I may just lose it.

David Chen

LOL I don't even know what in the convo could refer to Wonder Woman 1984??

The ethics of body swapping! I think I’m an outlier insofar as I liked that movie quite a bit. But setting personal tastes aside, I got pretty burnt out by the “is this movie morally bad because body swapping ick” discourse.

“Your sadness is wrong” was a strong contender though 🤣

The people (me) demand more Dave on Dave or even just Dave Cho. This was an incredible episode.

David Cho

It's easier with modern technologies!

Dave Chen, I have that voice too. My favorite way to counter its narrative is to ask what I should have sacrificed in order to find the time and energy to do xyz thing that I'm beating myself up for not doing. I think you will find that you are not just wasting a bunch of time. Spending time on relationships, fun, rest are all important and necessary. You might get a lot out of Oliver Burkeman's books if this resonates.
