David and @joyonapping had a chance to see Top Gun: Maverick last night in the theater. It was David's second time and @joyonapping's first. In this bonus audio, they discuss their reactions, including which parts were most moving, silly, and amazing.

Thanks, as always, for your support.

Song Notes by David Pots

Saw it last night, loved it. Dave – your tweet about this being the best legacyquel ever, which I'd seen before going in, fairly quickly pinned itself top of mind (while watching) as "Yes – I see what he means" I also found it distracting, that about 30 minutes in onward, 15% of my mind was continuously pre-occupied with all the friends/family I wanted to text as soon as the movie was over – letting them know they HAD to go see this. Kinda like how when something is so good you want to watch it again before you finished the initial watch/listen.

Also - it was such a joy/delight/relief that the test-plane sequence happened FIRST, because my fear from the trailers was that this would be some 3rd act reveal – where they needed to all suddenly start using some fancy new plane to beat the bad guys. I dreaded that. So glad it didn't happen – and as Joy said, he goes backwards w/ his plane tech – which was weirdly so much more satisfying.

about the 5th generation fighter thing: I think even without any knowledge of the military you can infer that the f18s the US are flying must be 4th generation fighters. and that makes the f14 from the first movie and the end of Maverick 3rd generation fighters (or earlier). so the ending sequence is actually necessary to the plot, because 1) it shows that maverick never needed modern tech in the first place, as highlighted by Rooster's confusion over all the analog switches. and 2) dogfighting isn't an irrelevant skill, because if it was just about tech then a 4th generation fighter could never beat a 5th generation fighter. this goes hand in hand with your comparison about Tom cruise's career, cause you can see it as saying that real stunts and real skills can never be replaced by better tech (cgi, deep fakes, etc). at least not today. one other thing you guys didn't mention that I thought showed the difference between Maverick and the rest of the leadership is the scene where maverick says "... and making sure everyone comes back alive.... right?" and Jon Hamm and the other guy kind of look at each other as if to say "uhhhh we didn't really think about that". showing that Maverick learned from the first movie to prioritize his team's survival and that goose's death is still with him after all these years.

Loved this conversation! I agree 100% with EVERYTHING Joy said!

Hey no one is talking about the fact that at AMC theaters, Nicole Kidman thinks somehow even heartbreak feels good in a place like this. Sorry.

As a 65 year old I really dug the 70s music along with the redux of the original Top Gun music. I also think the ending was silly but satisfying.

Also it seemed like Maverick’s hangar was near Fallon Naval Air Station which is in NEVADA. Why they were at North Island is perplexing too since Top Gun is at Miramar which is miles away from Coranado Island. Oh and that was a Porshe Penny was driving. Still loved the movie despite its flaws.
