I really admire your combination of moral clarity and willingness to pause and consider before speaking. Very few people with a platform seem to demonstrate both of those traits simultaneously, but you do so consistently, regardless of the subject. That same thoughtfulness / willingness to hold multiple perspectives at once is what makes your cultural criticism so rich. Thank you for sharing! P.S. I'm so sorry to hear Joy has had such a rough time over the past month, and wish her the speediest of recoveries.

Dave Glanz

Dave, thanks again for a great diary. Glad to hear Joy is getting better, and sorry she's had such a rough time with Covid.

M. R. Turnage

Wishing you the best. Thanks for the raw thoughts. I feel like I know you better now.

Couldn't have written it better. I love these episodes most for this exact reason. I think I speak for most of us here: we're not here for the content, regardless of quantity or quality—we're here for you, Dave. Thank you!

That’s really scary, thanks for the update, Dave. My best to you and Joy… Hope her recovery is as quick as can be.

David

First, wishing you and Joy the best. It’s not easy being a caregiver nor watching a loved one suffer. I know firsthand the drain it can have on one’s creativity. You have our full support and your wellbeing is more important than another newsletter or video. Second, I really appreciate your review of the article and the point about which perspectives are valued and highlighted. I just watched Killers of the Flower Moon and just like Oppenheimer I wanted a lot more than just the white perspective. I do wonder about that ending though. Without spoilers, I think Scorsese was trying to demonstrate how white American artists re-enact and how American audiences engage with tragedies inflicted by white oppressors onto people of color in America. I look forward to the Filmcast discussion.

Thanks for this, I have always enjoyed what you put out Dave and I wish all the best for Joy’s recovery. I agree with what you talked about with social media, the behaviour I see is why I do not engage at all on the various platforms. Also what you have said about Killers of the Flower Moon made my decision to skip as I am not interested in seeing white folk do bad things movie as there is already such a long list of those type of movies and would have been nice to have a dual POV.

David Chen

Been thinking about that ending a lot and honestly I think I agree with your interpretation. But it's a few minutes of reflection at the end of a 3hour25mins film.

Peter Behravesh

Thank you, as always, for your candor, Dave. Even though I rarely comment, I greatly value your perspective. Wishing you and Joy all the best as you navigate her recovery.

Alec Rodriguez

Thanks for the update and perspective. Wishing a speedy recovery for Joy. Be well.

Hi Dave. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts here so much, and wish that you and Joy get through this tough health scare soon. (I’m amazed that you’ve been as productive as you have been, given your situation.) Your thoughts about “the outrage machine” resonate strongly with me. As someone who likely spends too much time online, I increasingly think about how I can make that time spent somewhat meaningful and relevant without stirring any kind of pit, or trolling, or ranting, or etc. Is it possible to be kind and compassionate online without becoming bland and dull? You’re actually one of the people showing one way to accomplish this strange balancing act. Thanks for all you do Dave, and best wishes to Joy as she continues to heal and get over this thing. -CDMatthew

Agreed. It’s almost a bit of eat your cake and have it too. I did appreciate the final image showcasing Osage resilience in dance and rhythm

Hey Dave, hope your wife is doing ok and wish her a speedy recovery. I appreciate your thoughts and I'm disappointed to hear about the POV in Killers of the Flower Moon. I read the book not too long ago, and the book does jump around between perspectives of different people. I realize that when adapting it for a film, that doesn't work quite as well, so they needed to find a main character to anchor the story to, but it's too bad we don't get much of the Osage perspective. A really great film from the Palestinian perspective of the conflict is Paradise Now. If you haven't seen it, I'd really recommend it.

Belle Weather

Healing hugs for Joy or Napping. I hope that she feels well soon.
