Enjoyed this conversation. Joy’s insight at the end really cuts right to the bone. In my experience (mostly online), the real money is made by choosing the best game to play in: the ones with gambling addicts, or hapless rich people, or otherwise good players who are having a psychological break. Not the table filled with tight/boring players and sharks. Winning is consensual exploitation of others. You are there and waiting to profit from their ignorance (at best) or compulsion (at worst). At least online, you can tell yourself whatever story you want about them. In person, it’s harder. Accumulate enough stories and it can feel pretty gross. One of the reasons I stopped. But I still hear from friends who play about their huge wins when a big fish who is clearly not well sits at their table and just bleeds money for hours and hours. It makes their month (or year). You keep mentioning Maria Konnikova’s book — I assume you’ve read Annie Duke’s book too? That one covered a lot of similar ground to what you’ve talked about regarding life lessons from poker and outcome independence and made an impression on me.

I'll admit: I was going to skip this episode because I personally have zero interest in poker and gambling...but I'm so glad I listened! My partner is Vietnamese, and his family plays SERIOUS (but fun) marathon poker games at holiday gatherings, and he enjoys playing poker occasionally at casinos (usually pai gow or texas hold 'em). Hearing your conversation helped me understand several things: why my partner enjoys the game so much, how I can be a bit less anxious about his playing and trying more to support him having a bit of fun, and just some of the dynamics that come into play in the game (which sound complex and interesting...from a distance, anyway). I have a family history of alcholism and addiction and I've been clean and sober for quite a while...circumstances which maybe plays into my anxiety about gambling in general. Sober or not, though, I think that much like joyonapping, poker would simply hold no interest for me, and I would definitely be bad at it! Getting to know you two as a couple through these special-edition podcasts has been so enjoyable, and the respect and affection you have for each other really come across...and is admirable. [And side note: I *loved* hearing you two talk about THE CROWN's first 4 episodes this season...such interesting insights, especially given the research that joyonapping has done. For me, the "ghosts" of Diana and Mohamed at end of Ep4 didn't bother me...in fact I found these moments poignant, and even true to life. Especially in those early days of grief, having a conversation like that with your loved one--even if it's only in your head--is very close to reality, or at least emotional reality. Thanks for this episode, and for sharing these glimpses of your journey together. And to both of you: good luck! CDMatthew in Boston P. S. One other observation. Maybe this is due to me listening to "Dave on Dave" but I find myself noticing when Dave Chen seems to apologize for "looseness" in a particular podcast, or a non-linear, "not-outlined" approach, when that quality of looseness can sometimes be an enjoyable quality rather than a detriment or a flaw. Just an observation...FWIW. Thanks!

First: Super happy to hear Joy’s voice hopefully indicating the Chen household is doing well after October’s diary! Would love to hear an episode of Dave’s Poker Corner with your brother (maybe even a recorded game!). It would be cool to also listen to your take on fine dining restaurants (even if it’s limited to the Seattle area).
