It's a new(?) Patreon podcast where David Chen chats with David Cho about his journey into the world of poker!

In this episode, David Chen discusses his history with poker, some of the anxieties he has about playing it more often, and potential areas of content creation around it.

As always, your feedback on anything I post here is always welcomed.

Yeah baby! Kept meaning to comment (2DoD's ago) about how I'd love love love to hear more DC poker content. So glad you made this!

Thank you for the poker content, Dave! I couldn't help but chuckle when hearing you discuss poker and knowing you're quite good at it. Why? I'm of Thai descent and since the time my parents were in college, Thais who play poker would always fear whenever someone of Chinese descent enters the game because it means he would take all their money lol...I don't know if it's a stereotype or not, but whenever I play, the Chinese always win. You guys are like assassins at the table. (I mean it in the friendliest way possible) keep up the great work! :)

Hi there Dave, I’m thrilled with the idea of poker-related Dave Chen content. Some thoughts to take or leave from the perspective of a former online low/mid stakes pro (in and shortly after college) who has been involved in the production of some poker training content… What I’d be super interested in is less about your personal poker journey towards becoming really good (it’s a lot of pressure, a huge time / mindspace commitment, only the obsessed make it) and more about your personal poker journey of having fun, meeting interesting poker people, and telling their stories. You are the perfect outside observer to this strange and absurd world of extreme personalities. There is so much material to mine and if the Tobolowsky Files taught me anything, it’s that you have an incredible skill for finding fascinating people and eliciting great stories from them. You just gotta get good enough to meet those people, not like win the WSOP or anything. BTW I envy your enjoyment of poker. I burned out when I realized the level of effort it would take to progress further than where I got.

“Sub-optimal decisions that lead to increasing sub-optimal decisions” (to paraphrase) reminds me of driving somewhere in a relative hurry — and the cost of hitting the next red light, in a close to 50-50 red light / green light toss up. Grand scheme of things you lose 1-2 minutes if you hit the next red light, but it also creates downstream possibility of hitting the next-next red light — which again is only 1-2 minutes added to the trip — but it could cascade turtles all the way down. Compared to dimension 616 version of yourself who hit every green light and got to the airport 10 minutes earlier. Obviously not 1:1, and I don’t condone driving unsafely! But it came to mind as an analog.

I think Dave and I are around the same age and getting into hold ‘em about 20 years ago totally tracks. I remember in college it started to blow up, was featured on ESPN, and we constantly were playing and having tournaments in the dorms/apts.

I’d normally have less than zero interest in poker content but I love any Dave-on-Dave chat and this was super interesting. Can’t wait to hear more.

I’ve never enjoyed card games nor gambling. But these episodes are making me want to learn how to play!
