Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, the Daves discuss:

Meal delivery service fees

The time Piers Morgan went after DChen

DChen's trip to Vegas

An update on DCho's startup

You have at least one avid supporter in Poughkeepsie!

I align so much with you, Dave (Chen). I'm also wired the same way. I find it so hard to do things "for fun" or "recreation." I still feel like I have to be the best, or at least be doing it for an important purpose. And, frankly, it has kinda ruined my life lol. But it also has been the reason for a lot of my success... I'm actively trying to do things I'm bad at (like visual art, painting, etc.) and do it without judging myself. So far, mixed results. And your moral fortitude, honestly, is the main reason I've been a listener and subscriber for so long (re: your conversation about going viral for the right things). Thanks for this conversation, guys!

I definitely agree with Cho about continuing to document your poker journey even if you "fail". Especially from you, Chen, as a person who strives to be the best that you can be in everything you do. To hear how you handle failure and your struggles I think would be really valuable.

How does David Cho not realize that by ranting about Jeff ranting about Taco Bell for 20 minutes for 20 minutes is playing right into Jeff’s hands? His whole thesis is “why would anyone talk about this” but you’re talking about it right now on this podcast. That’s why he did it, dumbass (sorry, that was for comedic effect, just making jokes here). I thought David Cho had relatively high media literacy, but he seems pretty incredulous as to why Jeff talked about it, but it seems pretty obvious. If you see something stupid every fiber of your being wants to say it is dumb, but by doing so, you play right into their hands. By dunking on Jeff, you’re doing exactly what he wants you to do.

David Chen

Also, I shared this with Cho and he said “Wow, that is really good”

The poker in Casino Royale is really bad , it’s like fake sitcom type of hands , the final hand is one of those impossible outcomes just made for suspense. Like the John wick 4 card game. Rounders is so cool , hope they make a sequel

David Chen

yeah I don't think it was great but at least they showed a poker hand! Extremely rare to see these days in any film.

Shout-out to Poughkeepsie!

So I’m sure you know from my many comments that I am also Asian. So I feel comfortable asking you this Dave. 1. Are there a lot of Asians playing poker in Vegas? You have a rough percentage? Cause we know the stereotype… 2. How is your mental calculation skills? Do you often calculate the probability odds in your head like Mads Mikkelson in Casino Royale?

David Chen

1) I’d say that there was about 10-20% Asians, so overrepresentation compared to population.

David Chen

2) theoretically I should be doing those exact calculations every hand! I’m still not there yet tho. But I do have a rough sense of where my hand stands.

Dave Chen, the Madame Web of anticipating social virality.

My 2 cents on poker content. IMO, for poker focused episodes, you really need a cohost with strong poker skills experience. Kind of a Dave & Joanna vibe I guess. I love poker, so you’d think the poker eps would be perfect for me, but I found them a bit tough to get thru, due to a lack of a poker expert to balance. And that’s my unsolicited feedback. Chenhead from way back, you rock Dave
