Hi everyone, I thought you might enjoy watching the first episode of our roadtrip around the NC500. In this first episode we head to Dornoch Beach. The whole point of this trip is to give me the opportunity to get back to being an artist; painting for painting's sake and not turning it into a tutorial or a product. I started off with what I thought would be a simple beach landscape...Crumble had other ideas!

I have attached a reference photo of the scene I painted at the bottom of the post.

Sit back and enjoy a lovely, relaxing (and a bit slapstick) watercolour vlog with gorgeous scenes of Scotland. We have plenty more episodes to come.

I'm painting with the Etchr Lab Perfect Sketch Book, the Cass Art Travel Paint set and my very own pro arte brushes

Watercolour Painting Adventure Through the Scottish Highlands!

Watercolour NC500 Road Trip - Episode One: Painting on windswept Dornoch Beach Join us on a colourful artistic adventure as Ant, Crumble and I drive Scotland’s legendary NC500 route. Living and creating from the cosy confines of our campervan, I set out to capture the ever‑changing landscapes to see if I can get back to painting for pleasure following a decade of painting to a deadline. From white sandy beaches, native wildflowers and the dramatic heights of Bealach na Bà - the UK’s steepest single‑track mountain road which winds up from sea level to over 2,000 ft with hair‑raising views through the Torridon Hills - the journey promises scenes ripe for painting. The first stop on our trip is Dornoch Beach where we discover that Crumble has other ideas when it comes to painting on the beach. Each vlog blends tranquil painting sessions—watercolour brushes, campervan windows, and mist‑shrouded glens—with vivid travel narrative. You’ll travel with us, paintbrush in hand, discovering how the NC500 is more than a road trip—it’s a flowing canvas of history, solitude, and raw Highland beauty. Hit subscribe and bring your palette—there’s so much to see, paint, and share. What brand of book, I heard 300 weight, it looks to be of great quality?

Betsi

I loved it! What a great idea, well done on the painting, despite Crumbles sand showers!! I like the way you did the clouds, leaving the white space to incorporate later…You and Ant are so talented, I’m surprised you haven’t been scooped up by some television channel, to create your own show. Honestly, you can do it all on your own, as you have been. You guys rock!!!

Ah you're so kind Betsi. Yes I was pleased with those clouds, they are something that remain quite a challenge for me. Ant used to work on BBC Countryfile which has a rather similar feel!

Loved watching this, Harriet. It looks very peaceful and relaxing, even with Crumble’s antics. What colors do you have in your travel watercolor kit? Are they Daler Rowney?
