Hi everyone, whilst the daily halloween painting challenges continue over on Youtube, I'm excited to get the chance to talk about one of my favourite new painting tools: a viewfinder.

This is just a home made hole in a piece of card (this one is 5.5 x 8.5cm) but it really transforms the experience of starting a landscape or a large subject matter. It can also help you tell an interesting story on the page. I hope you enjoy this little video and have a go at making one yourself. Make it a size that easily fits in your sketchbook for your next painting adventure.

I've attached the reference photo of the cat in the courtyard.

Harriet, do you paint with the viewfinder in place or do you trace the opening? Do you tape around the edges? I enjoyed the video and will definitely make a viewfinder. Thanks

Gorgeous paintings (and cat!). If you have time, what are the dimensions of the view finder?

Hi Cynthia, I just use it to trace the shape and to look through at the actual view but it's not in place when I paint

I love the viewfinder idea! I could use a bit of help to get the focal area of the landscape I want to paint. Love the idea of a triptych. Has my wheels turning! 😊
