Welcome along to the beginning of what is going to be a wonderful watercolour community. My aim is to develop our collective creativity and learn new ways to enjoy watercolour whether you are a beginner or a seasoned painter, we could all do with a creative boost every now and then. All the while we will be building up knowledge and improving our painting skills. I'm giving my Patrons the week to join and get prepared before we begin.

You don't need much to paint with watercolour and we all have our brand preferences. I have linked to the brands I will be using (to start off with) so you can equip yourself if you don't already have your preferred watercolour kit. I have linked to one of my preferred art stores Cass Art for this post. I also recommend Jacksons Art and Pullingers for online supplies.

Brushes I will be using rounded point brushes

Paint I prefer to use tubes of paint, and I always recommend buying the best quality you can afford but please don't worry if you don't have professional/artist quality paints. Here is a list of colours I recommend to have when starting out: Sap Green, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow, Prussian Blue, Permanent Rose, Ochre, Burt Sienna. You can buy sets with blocks of colour called 'pans' or half pans'. Here is a link to a decent starter set.

Paper I prefer to use Cold Pressed paper which is the more textured type. My favourite paper to use is Daler Rowney Langton. You will also find that Daler Rowney Aquafine is a good affordable alternative.

Handy extras You will need a jar of water, a bit of kitchen roll to blot and clean your brush and a pencil and rubber.

I'm so excited to get started! In the meantime if you have any questions please send me a message on here and we can speak there.

For any of you who are complete beginners this might be a good time to head over to my youtube channel and have a look through my Watercolour for Beginners playlist to build your confidence so you can get the most out of next Tuesday and beyond!

Hi! I have a question about paper: don’t you use a 100% cotton paper for your works? Thank you!

de Winton Paper co.

great question, I use cotton paper for my commissions but I've always made sure I try using a range of brands and values because, as a teacher, I need to make sure I can confidently talk about the different ways paper of varying quantities will behave so as not to alienate anyone. So as we go forward, I encourage everyone to source the best quality materials they can afford but not to worry if you don't have the top stuff. x

Hi Harriet, I became a sweet pea at the beginning of April, mainly because I was so impressed with your tutorials on YouTube. Your guidance is so clear, informative and strangely relaxing. I’ve taken to watching an episode before I go to sleep at night. I do have a little bug bear, which I am sure you have no control over, but it has taken a while to scroll down to your first post of 01/09/20 (UK date). It would be helpful to have a quick drop down index (unless I am missing something 🤷🏼‍♀️). If you have an opportunity to feedback to the creators of Patreon. Obviously it has been useful to see all the challenges, but it does take time. Is it just me?

Hi Sally, while I have no control over the design of the patreon website, I do make an effort to add relevant tags to each post meaning there is a quick reference at the top of the home page. For example, you can click on the ‘watercolour challenge’ tag and all the challenges appear in a list. It’s worth feeding your comments back to patreon themselves

Thank you for your quick response, Harriet. It has been useful. I will just have to be patient and learn to navigate the site. Have a great weekend 💐
