Watercolour challenge 11 (Patreon)
Content
Happy Tuesday everybody, I adored all the colourful little houses from last week. Well done, you all did a fantastic job! Now it's onto some serious detail.
A very warm welcome to our new Patrons! If this is your first watercolour challenge then I recommend going back through the previous challenges to get yourself up to speed and see how this all works. All the while you can access all the tutorials on my youtube channel if you would like to go through some watercolour for beginners basics or brush up on other skills.
Today is the first step on our 'proper' house painting journey, starting with the Country Cottage.
This is a private youtube link which only you sweet pea patrons have access to.
You will need
A range of brushes.
Colours of your choosing. I used the blues, browns and blacks in my palette.
Watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to).
jar of water
kitchen roll to blot the brush.
Pencil and Set square (a rule is pretty good but it's really useful to have a right angle for this)
After watching the video...(if you can watch it on a screen larger than a phone that will improve the viewing experience as there is quite a bit of pencil drawing at the start)
Draw two pencil houses (revisit last week's video if you are unsure of how to start). Each week we are going to focus on a different part of the house, this week is Stone Work. I have also attached a few photos of cottages with the kind of stone work I am talking about.
The house dimensions I chose were:
-Large house width 10.5cm, Height 9cm
-Small House Width 6cm, Height (to top of roof) 5.7cm
Feel free to choose your own sizes and details (i.e. number of windows, door shape etc), the main aim is to have two pencil drawings of the same house but in considerably different sizes so we can compare and contrast how the painting techniques apply when varying the scale.
I've provided some suggestions for additional architectural detail beyond the basic box house.
On a separate piece of paper, follow the video instructions to try out some rustic stone work.
Apply your stone work to both houses and see *if* the different scales require a different approach. It isn't always the case but it's something to be aware of.
Although this is a work in progress I would still encourage sharing your work. Use #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco. And please do have a look at everyone else's interpretations of the brief (search the hashtag and you will see all the patreon insta posts from everyone in here) and celebrate each other's work. We learn from seeing how others interpret a single brief so a community encourages progres
Comment below with your findings, and if you are sharing your work on Instagram, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco.
Have a wonderful week.
