Watercolour Challenge 22 (Patreon)
Content
Welcome along everyone to our next step in landscape painting. Today we are looking at using a very limited palette, inspired by Turner's painting Norham Castle, Northumberland.
It's another look at a landscape with a large body of water, a colourful sky, distant horizons and detailed trees - all things that have been covered in earlier sessions but sticking to a palette of blue and yellow.
Hello to our new Patrons! If this is your first watercolour challenge then I recommend going back through the previous challenges to get yourself up to speed and see how this all works.
All the while you can access all the tutorials on my youtube channel if you would like to go through some watercolour for beginners basics or brush up on other skills.
This is a private youtube link which only you Sweet Pea and Cherry Blossom patrons have access to.
You will need
A range of brushes. I introduce a One stroke flat headed brush for large washes. Look out for my new brushes materials test coming soon!
Colours I used: French Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Green Gold, Cadmium Orange, Cobalt Blue Deep, Burnt Sienna, Mars Black, Prussian Blue.
Watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to).
jar of water
kitchen roll to blot the brush.
pencil, eraser and ruler.
washi tape if you wish to tape down the paper.
After watching the video...(if you can watch it on a screen larger than a phone that will improve the viewing experience as there is a little bit of pencil drawing at the start)
Having watched it all through once, choose a duo of complimentary colours from either side of the colour wheel. To learn a bit more about colour theory, watch watercolour challenge 3
Have a go at painting your own version of this landscape: a distant hill in front of a hazy sky. A calm body of water with just the faintest ripple and a crisp and detailed tree in the foreground.
I am looking forward to see how you get on! Use #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco. And please do have a look at everyone else's interpretations of the brief (search the hashtag and you will see all the patreon insta posts from everyone in here) and celebrate each other's work. We learn from seeing how others interpret a single brief so a community encourages progress.
