Hi everyone the wait is over: we are embarking on our first full pet portrait! As I mention in the tutorial there is no specific reference photo that I'm working from, however please do feel free to look at photos and choose an image to work from (google image search 'labrador' and you'll be sorted).

Don't be scared, take it slow and you'll be amazed with the results! If you haven't yet watched all the animal painting watercolour challenges starting with the cheetah, please watch those and go through them before trying this. The whole point of these tutorials is to slowly build skills so no-one is overwhelmed or intimidated by any challenge.  This is using the skills I have learned so far and I'm keen for us to be able to eventually build confidence to paint poses without always looking at a photo.

Welcome to all our new Patrons, I hope you're finding your way around my Patreon ok. Don't forget, you can always send me a message if you have any specific questions. Discord is by far the best place for comments and tips on any paintings you've done as a result of the watercolour challenges as you can post your pictures and see how each other are getting on.

If you are new to painting then I highly recommend going back to the first watercolour challenges and working through the first through to get your basic techniques going. Then you can pick and choose whatever you like!

This is a private youtube link which only you sweet pea and cherry blossom patrons have access to.

You will need

watercolour paper

your regular watercolour kit

pencil and rubber

After watching the video...

Draw and paint along with me!

I am so excited to see yourHave a wonderful week. Dont forget to share your pieces on Instagram and Discord!

How on earth you make these paintings come to life is extraordinary.

Thanks for your confidence, may or may not share it when I have a go, as all my sketches looked like an unknown animal!

At the stage where I am now I can't draw or paint animals without a reference photo. Because I don't know anatomy so well. And I started doing the same as we were doing with cheetahs' photos - divide into simple shapes. It really helps. And you know what else? I found a great tutorial which explains very well how to divide dog's body into simple shapes to draw it. I think it will help me to remember anatomy and of course more practice will help too.

Absolutely, it's definitely quite a leap this week. As I said, feel free to use a photo of your own choice to have a go at this. We're going to be building upon this over the next few weeks, painting some more dogs before moving onto cats!

What the exciting news! I am so thankful to you for these challenges!

I am excited about the cats. I have painted dogs in the past, but cheated and traced them because they were gifts for dog owners and I wanted the owners to actually recognise their dogs, which would have been impossible with my drawing. The way you are teaching us to draw using circles and rectangles etc is really helping me to improve a bit, but I find the drawing stage of painting tedious as I am so bad at it. Hopefully getting better gradually will make me enjoy it more. Thanks Harriet.

Oh I totally know what you mean. Tracing is definitely the quick and easy option and there is nothing wrong in it because its the painting that is really the bit you can then excel in. However, it's such a good skill to be able to draw more confidently and not always rely on tracing however dull! Believe me, I do the bare minimum of pencil and just want to get painting! Good for you for persevering!

I loved this challenge sooo much. And will paint all animals you will be teaching us. This is so great experience. I want to continue.
