Hiiiii MJ 👋🏽 I’m thrilled to get my Q A’d on air but why is this the first I’m hearing that you’re an Ancient Egypt head?? That’s so relatable. Also the healing factor. Ok Ball Up Top

Madra na Móna

To the guy who was looking for good Welsh writers, w/d highly recommend Lynette Roberts' "Gods with Stainless Ears."

Re: your Dostoyevsky point, I’m also reading Brothers Karamazov currently (not sure which translation but it’s an older one) and at this point have to take a shot every time a character “cries” a sentence.

Fair on the Caitlyn Clark point, my Indiana sports homerism fogs my vision, since there isn’t fuck all else to be proud of from there lol. Maybe the better way to put it would be “similar in having a league altering style of play” rather than exact same game (and Steph is undeniably the better player in a more advanced league, but regardless Caitlyn is on track to shift the entire style of play of the WNBA so long as she can adjust to whatever defense counters they start to throw at her) Also hilarious that I ask a question regarding the precision of language, but as soon as the topic shifts to sports, the word is used as a sledgehammer of barbershop talk. Let the word tenderize flesh, baby

big microbe

That's pretty scary about your seizures, and I very much hope those three are the only ones you have. I'd be interested in hearing how you feel a couple of weeks from now. I had one a few years back and it somehow did some good things along with the bad

harry

Really enjoying this one have been making a bit of a resolution to take arts and the like if not a bit more seriously then intentionally. Been wanting to hear more of your thoughts on the Beatles since you mentioned their vision of childhood. All day I've had your cover of Act Naturally stuck in my head, used to bump it a lot this time four years ago walking around campus during lockdown. Just want to say thanks for all you do again.

Daulton Mattingly

The Spurs have been doo doo trash for the past few seasons but as someone who watches them closely it really feels like something is brewing there. In time I think they will get to use Wemby to lead them through deep playoff runs.

Iwan Heneghan

Hi Mike, many thanks for your answer & recommendations! Also love the pronunciations and the Burton impression. I know Carmarthen pretty well, my Mum is from just outside there, it’s ‘Caerfyrddin’ in Welsh, it means Merlin’s Fort. My surname is actually Irish, though, but does kind of look Welsh I guess Also +1 for a q&a part 2, and I wholeheartedly subscribe to your penis envy solution

David Bond

If you and your brother did a semi regular NBA podcast I would be so happy

GP

Love these Q&A eps brother, would love to keep rolling with the next ep

PS Happy New Year MSJ and all. For what it's worth my first song of the new year was Ventura Highway. I'm sure you've got opinions about America but the intro to that song ("chewin' on a piece of grass, walkin' down the ro-oad") is one of the few reliable things that always makes me smile.

John Waaben

Thanks Mike for the ep, especially the music recs. If it’s not too much, I would appreciate you doing another ep answering folks’ questions because you didn’t get to my Moby Dick q about animal intelligence and Ahab! And thanks also for everything you do!

Horseloverfat

Here for any and all Mike love shit talk. I don’t have any special insight into the creation of “surf’s up”, but I assume he is responsible for interrupting what I otherwise consider an all time great record with the laughably insipid and — retrospectively — demonic “student demonstration time”.

Thank you so much for answering my question (and for saying my name correctly)! When you were talking about Pound being a man of action, it reminded me of a line from Baudelaire where he says he is sometimes possessed by a demon of action - in contrast to the restricting demon of Socrates. Your thoughts make me think of Baudelaire as an impotent version of pound. The only alternative to liberalism he can imagine is the old world, but where he has more say on things. He merely daydreams about action. Benjamin has seemingly very high praise for Baudelaire. I want to say it’s in the first essay in “The Writer of Modern Life” where he says something like “if there was a camera that could capture essences, no one possesses the vital fluid to develop them, but Baudelaire alone can read the plates”. As you said, Baudelaire was concerned with the Arcades because they made mass garbage for crowds instead of refined goods for aristocrats. So his proto fascism is not the same as the implicit fascism of the Arcades. Probably better to think of him as a reactionary monarchist who would be giddy for fascism if he lived to see it. To account for Benjamin’s praise, could one say Baudelaire is alienated in some way that allows him to glean the essence of the Arcades? The sub title to Adorno’s Minima Moralia is “reflections on a damaged life” so perhaps he, and Benjamin, are alienated by their upper class lives in a similar way. But whereas they do their best to clearly explicate the modern essences, they are implicitly present in Baudelaire, and sublimated into his psychosexual fantasies.

Re: McCartney love songs, my favorite — of the variety “forbidden young love, the whole truth of which must be concealed from parents” — is “The Back Seat of My Car”

"As for an actual interpretation, I don't know, Michael. But what it is, is damn good poetry." -VDP

Brian

Having spent too much time at DFW airport, and having tried and failed to read IJ, I laughed out loud at your DFW joke.

Dan Z

Thanks for clarifying the "terminally ill" part. Wasn't sure if I was missing details you had talked about before. Glad to know death isn't "just around the corner" in that sense

Hypnerotomechia

"A fixation with boner machines?" Ha! A fittingly Pynchonian interpretation. Thanks for answering my question.

Leonardo DiCaprizoliano

Thanks for answering my question Michael. I’ll definitely check out the DeLillo novels you recommended as well!

Parahomie

You are still comletely lucid and coherent. It brings me no joy to report this, but them's the facts

Sage

Please eventually talk about Formula 1, especially if it is with Liz from TrueAnon.

Shunning Ground

Thanks for talking about RIO! Univers Zero are one of my favourite bands. Did you ever hear the Henry Cow offshoot The Work? I love Cardiacs and Thinking Plague too. All the best

Michael F

All the stuff about Dylan, Pynchon, Farina, etc. but no mention of Dylan’s “Murder Most Foul. After 8 years of nothing, in 2020 he released his longest song, a dirge for Kennedy. It’s fully “pilled” but what I find more interesting is how the arc of the song mirrors the turning back Pynchon charged him with, laying it all out breaks him and he can only cope with what America really is by retreating into its music and culture which had been everything to him, of which he is now a ghost.

Stubb’s Pipe

Would love to know where Pound references Mao. I can see why he liked his writing from a technical standpoint. Mao knew how to get the point and stop. I believe I found the Lenin reference you mentioned in Canto XVI.

Michael McGroarty

Michael, if it means anything, I am reading PROUD FLESH by John Wilkinson on your recommendation. I barely scraped a decent secondary school education but I have patience and an indefatigable stupidity that doesn't mind not 'getting it'. So much of John's language is radiating around me, and I'm unsure if my comprehension has the necessary fissures to allow him to infiltrate me. But my God what a relief to read words that require slowness and love and deep, abiding uncertainty. I thank you for introducing me to so many brilliant writers. Truly. P.S. You've mentioned A COURT OF MIRACLES by Brian Catling before. How on earth did you source this book? It's NOWHERE.

La Synthèse Humaine

great episode - would love to hear your thoughts on italian prog! area, aktuala, franco battiato especially

Andrew Rassling

Michael, regarding your last point. I just got done giving my dad an overview of what political zionism is, why it's not Judaism, and why saying what Israel does is different from what "the Jews" do. I also had to explain WW2, the status of the US as the demon attempting to mantle the globe (in less fanciful terms) using ideas you have brought to me. I was recieved positively by a man who literally said in the same conversation that he thinks the ideal human state will be in 200 years under technocracy. Not only did what you taught me make a ton of sense to him, but none of it was the insane, incomprehensible shit he was spewing during this discussion. Ideas that you grew inside me helped me sway a man to stop being as antisemitic and convinced him to be a lucid creature for a second. This is despite him being a "more grounded" person than you. I understand that your mind hurts you in ways I cannot imagine, but you are not yet totally crazy. Also I want to say that you inspired some small healing of a heart, and I got more money to Rulin with my paycheck. I hope you know that you can get your superpower some small way, for just a short moment. Thanks man.

DeadPrince

Next NYE Michael, you should do a tip-line episode. But the tip line is users calling in their dreams. You, Liz, and Brace could really dig deep into this boner fixation phenomena.

Jack McCarty

Mike! Getting my questions answered on the show was a remarkable birthday gift for me. Completely agree with your take on “I’ve just seen a face.” It really doesn’t get better than that. As always, much love. -Jack

Loved your thoughts on Prog. The near total of my teenage years were spent in Richmond Va, late 80’ through the mid 90’s. Very interesting music scene at that time. Seemingly no end of jazz influenced, largely instrumental trios formed by people who were all in the early/mid 80’s punk scene. Words can’t stress enough how magical that scene was for a young kid looking to get his wig peeled back. I only mention it because much like “prog” that scene culminated into getting labeled “math rock” by people who had no inner dealings with it at all. There was one band in particular that comes to mind, that it made ZERO sense getting lumped into that ludicrous genre title, the Alter-Natives. I genuinely think you’d enjoy their stuff given everything you were talking about re: prog. In any case, thanks for unintentionally taking me for a trip down memory lane!

roy cochrane

Always here for more bball chat

Ben

Cool you mentioned rock in opposition/henry cow. Been listening to that stuff a lot (also recommend the band “present” as well for people interested, especially the album triskaidekaphobie)

Christian Macias

Did anyone catch the name of the prince cover MSJ recommends?

Grace

Thoughts on bleeding edge?

K

does that podcast you're always playing as background noise count as "fluff entertainment" or? 👁️

R

Thank you, I loved the pronouciations and impressions a lot! Also I think your penis envy answer is the best I’ve heard, and being a psychotherapist I’ve come across quite a few of them.

Soft Egg

More questions! Tysm

Trazdat

Whenever you get to more questions I’d love to hear your thoughts on ska music, in any of its varieties.

I live in west LA and I was immediately reminded of what Michael said about “Moloch on the horizon” when I saw the fires yesterday in Pacific Palisades, while driving home from work, and the smoke rising up from the earth and swallowing the sun.

You’re right about men, but it’s hard to sound wrong while cribbing from Lacan. Amazingly wrong about women though. Phallocentrism (or if you’re pedantic, phallogocentrism) develops out of relationships of concrete exploitation, and I would actually say that envying the simplicity of the male fantasy of the phallus is also part of the male phallic fantasy. It definitely isn’t female. Lacan doesn’t do great one the woman’s side of this question either - (women fantasize of being phallus ? Really?) so it’s hard. Right now my favorite answer is from Andrea Long Chu’s reading of the SCUM Manifesto. For her, castration anxiety is actually a reaction formation - men unconsciously desire to be castrated, and are afraid that they will like it. In any case, you waffled.

AbsenteeUncle

Love the mention of Stand inside your love. Also one of my favorite drumming songs; up there with Muzzle in the smashing pumps pantheon. Jimmy doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Billy recently said that he realized that Jimmy was the heart of the bands sound and couldn’t agree more.
