MSJ, what are your favorite translations of Homer?

Hey - hope it’s not too late to submit a question or request for part le deux. Wld love to know yr thoughts on 2666 which I’m currently reading, especially how it dovetails with Pynchon. The 4th Reich isn’t hiding it anymore is it (in the Global North I mean. Was ever thus in the Global South.)

Romulus V. Snakehead

I hope it's not too late. Never got a chance all week to send a question. In your time in Texas, did you ever visit San Antonio, and what was your read on the city and its people?

I'd like to submit a question. I know it's last minute but this is important. Demons, are they real? If so what is reality.

Great episode Michael. Thanks for the Moreau recommendation. I need to know more about his life and what he saw. The baby music stuff was interesting. I played my eldest pet sounds pretty early. It made me think that there's sonic version of this stan brakhage quote "Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception. How many colors are there in a field of grass to the crawling baby unaware of 'Green'? How many rainbows can light create for the untutored eye?"

"bomba kryptologiczna", by its Polish inventors, later called "Bombe" by the English at Bletchley Park. The room-sized electromechanical machine used to decode Nazi Enigma encrypted messages. Also a dessert, incredibly. If you were taking the sleep-aid I think you might have been I have been around enough people who have taken it, that with shocking regularity, just puts them into an extended ambulatory hypnopompic state that they will have little or no memory of after, and they will do some weird shit.

I'd wager there's a significant number of babies who would love thrashing around to some Cryptopsy.

I’d be interested to hear more about how you think therapy is bullshit. I work as a therapist for people with severe (eg schizophrenia or bipolar I). I think there’s a lot of bullshit about therapy and the medicalizing of the field has see we’d to downplay the pretty natural reactions to child abuse. I hate the phrase “oh everyone could benefit from therapy.” Therapy should be a form of treatment, not some panacaea for everyone. Unfortunately, I think there’s a majority of therapists who are Liz Warren liberals (psychologists were one of her top donors). Cognitive behavioral therapy is very individualistic and capitalistic (

Fr0id

I think it was your prior episode where you said therapy is bullshit, even moreso than psychology or psychiatry. I disagree. I work as a psychologist. Your correctly identify the number of bullshit artists. I specialize with clients who have severe illnesses like schizophrenia or bipolar. It sounds like you have some personal experience with therapists. Frankly, if your therapist is not at least as smart as you, they won’t work. For a lot of reasons, you can’t trust someone saying to do something you already believed you tried. You

I remember Eleanor Rigby from when I was four or five. It takes me back to existing at nose-level with lemon furniture polish. Something about the polished wood gelled with the sound of the strings. The persistence of that memory might indicate that E.R. was much more interesting to my little ears than Yellow Submarine.

I've only recently started listening to you man. My heart tears when I hear the pain in your voice when you talk about killing yourself. I beg you please to never do that. Think of your loved ones.

Great episode. Thoughts on the Orpheus/Dionysus material you discussed in relation to Joyce and the Wake. Specifically: HCE disappearing and coming back into the narrative and the sparagmos. What do you think Joyce got out of/was doing with this material?

A nice bit of Brit-lore related to the beginning bit about age of consent and creepy salaciousness. There’s a woman called Charlotte Church who had a bizarre pop hit with Pie Jesu at the age of 13 and our biggest-selling national newspaper ran a daily countdown until she became of legal consenting age. Truly unmatched as a paedophile nation.

thank you for answering my question MSJ, and thanks for the way you took it, as opposed to a more academic go. I think more than anything I've been a little lost in the aridity at the expense of the imagination lately. (Also fitting that you gave it a right good Abrahamic introduction when my big reading for this past week has been Hawthorne, Iain Sinclair, Edmund goddamn Spenser, and the OT Prophets...it's been a week). On the off chance you take any more questions, one struck me while you were talking about Joyce & Pynchon, any thoughts on the 18 book structure of Ulysses? I've long wondered about that one, 6 less than the Odyssey, 6 more than the Aeneid, and all that, but never come to a satisfying sense of what exactly is up there. (Reading Spenser is permitting me unhinged and almost certainly false theories about Ulysses as a completion/rejoinder/conquest of the 6 book Faerie Queene. Admittedly Spenser died before finishing it, but like with the placement of the word "center" in GR, when you play games with the gods they might decide to participate sometimes...) Also I entirely agree with both your sheer confusion at "fun" novels and your belief that slop music actively shouldn't exist. Appreciate you, hang in there best as you can.

Ben Reigle

Thank you for your work, brother. Please remember everyone needs a vacation sometimes. I would hope that I speak for everyon, when I say, we trust you and we want you to hang with this bullshit that's Existing as long as you can. You are needed.

Pretty much every show you’ve done you say at least one thing that I’ve thought myself but never even tried to express to other people because it’s too weird. This is a quality I hardly find in anything else, even the things I enjoy. Today, it was the thought about music and art and how they connect to other aspects of life. I have long thought of this same idea and I find that practicing music has helped me make sense of the rest of the world in ways I can’t necessarily describe, but the thing you said about the constant cycles and changing and the enjoyment of the change really opened that idea up for me. That often happens with things you say in your shows. I also relate to the feelings of constantly being miserable and wanting to die, but I think in those deeper thoughts we have that resonate, we understand that there is something here to experience and there is a purpose.

MRSAful Fate

My baby and I have been listening to a lot of Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Quite a lot of timbrees in a band like that.

Gooch Immane

Listened to this on my walk home from work the other night, and there was some especially cinematic lightning happening. Just as you were wrapping up the detail about the word "center" and taking it as an omen to not mess with the gods, damned if the first big chord of the Youth And Gold outro didn't get a whole sky-wide, eyeball-crisping filigree of crackling plasma.

Full disclosure, my job is a therapist, albeit in a community mental health setting where my average day is driving out to the homes of people with schizophrenia or other severe disorders and trying to help them get on meds or help them get out of delusional belief symptoms that are ruining their lives. I don’t think therapy is a bullshit blanket thing. I think it can be an effective way to help mostly healthy people achieve goals, struggling people get insight and change themselves, and for people in the depths of suffering find support and strength find love and compassion and ways to change. I frequently run into the fact that… see next

Regarding the word middle being in the exact middle of Gravity's Rainbow - I can't remember what episode it was, but I know that at some point on the Secret History of Western Esorericism podcast, while discussing Plato, either the host or the guest mentioned that in one of Plato's works, he did something very similar by placing the Greek word for center at the very middle of the dialogue if you were to count the syllables in the original version from the beginning forward and the end backward. I wish I knew exactly what text this was but would have to relisten to the Plato series to find out.

Hey Michael, considering your catholic background, do you have any thoughts or opinions on Gene Wolfe? Have you read The Book of the New Sun?

Also absolutely, affirming that, between my kids and my nieces and nephews and some friends kids (it's a small sample-set but still) they come outta the gate pretty much fully equipped emotionally and perceptually. The rest kind of accretes around them in ways both good and bad. One of the great joys of the world is to be around a child and their astonishing perception of the phenomenological world and synthesis of it. Before it gets shamed out of them. I was always "dude seriously you gotta look both ways before you cross the street" cause I didn't want them to get mowed down, but after that hang onto the rest. For the music part: the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour (in general but especially) if you can get the one w the booklet: "AWAY IN THE SKY, beyond the clouds.." It worked real well for me and my siblings

Shadowplay

Alas, my copy of Gravity's Rainbow is 900+ pages, but it does get the ending right with the obliterating white page. It doesn't have the "sprocket holes" but per some reddit forum these were a designer's idea, not Pynchon's, and are designed to represent the holes in GIs' censored letters home. In any case, Cinemascope came about in the 1950s (after a one film experiment in France in the early thirties, not called Cinemascope but Hypergonar, which sounds like a glandular problem) so it would've been an anachronistic reference. I loved this episode though, take care!

Can somebody timestamp the part where he gets to the point
