Awesome. Thank you, MJ

The Ottoman Christians were the raw materials used to create the modern state of Turkey, too. And the Germans helped them do it.

Stubb’s Pipe

Question I’ve been meaning to ask you: I know you’ve called D.H. Lawrence a bad novelist, but what about his poems and short stories? If I remember correctly, Pound writes in one of his collected letters that Lawrence is one of the greatest contemporary prose writers, along with Joyce. I believe he also wrote, possibly in that same letter, that Lawrence’s poetry (one of his early volumes specifically, can’t remember which) is more or less in line with his own poetic principles.

This is of course fantastic but I wanted to say thanks for the recommendation on Gunslinger - you can read book one online (and you should), and my physical copy of all three books is in the mail. It's really good.

Escheloned Confusions

It's 7:15PM on August 29. I was worried about today because of the dream I told you about.

Madra na Móna

Curious if you've ever seen Peter Hall's videoed version of the Oresteia with Tony Harrison translating where the whole thing is this insane very thudding Anglo-Saxon verbiage chattering and screaming almost rap all delivered by men in masks one of whom is very obviously Baldrick from Blackadder. Dunno how it would work written instead of staged but it's one of the coolest things I've seen.

Capital Knockers

Michael, have you read Hypnerotomachia Poliphili or the Golden Ass? If so, what did you think of them?

Hemlock

Thanks for mentioning the Oresteia - my favorite piece of literature. Orestes however killed his mother, not his father. He killed his mother to avenge his father. The detail matters because Furies avenge women specifically.

Re the Prentice dream reading… I often think of GR as a psychogeography or a dream-geography of WWII and the immediate post-war period. Not just Prentice’s, but maybe the way Prentice would experience everyone else’s experiences and fantasies of it. I also had a dream within a dream recently, the first one I remember, pretty crazy.

Does anyone know if there's a particular source/episode where the alchemical index is defined? For a new listener

Ok so sorry to triple post. But. Have you read Bleeding Edge? Strong possibility Nick Windust’s soul is with its evil twin in Xibalba (which is also Deep Archer?)

Bob Mycelium

One of your very best. Bravo.

Thinking of Adorno writing in Minima Moralia in 1944 that people were "reduced to walk-on parts in a monster documentary film which has no spectators, since the least of them has his bit to do on the screen" And right after that he anticipates what Gravity's Rainbow would make of the V2: "Had Hegel’s philosophy of history embraced this age, Hitler's robot-bombs would have found their place beside the early death of Alexander and similar images, as one of the selected empirical facts by which the state of the world-spirit manifests itself directly in symbols"

Tyson Settle

Im not sure at which point I began to wonder this, possibly at the lightly burnt into your glial matter, but do you have the same distaste for Kant that you do Hegel? Also what western so called " philosophers" do you find some value in, disregarding "isms" or the way they have been understood or later utilised by others? Still interested in your take on Patrick white as well.

Hi Michael long time listener, just getting caught up on this series and it has been fully excellent. Regarding the Theatre, there was a phenomenon/technique you mentioned a long time ago having to do with a dramatic reveal/re-contextualization (I remember you mentioned Day in The Life by the Beatles as an example, where in the song “wakes up” from the dream when it transitions to the MCartney part) of all that come before it. I’ve been wracking my brain for over a year trying to remember what you called this. Do you happen to remember? Thank you and all the best , you sound relatively healthy (whatever tf that means). FWIW I’ll surely be signing up for the music podcast because those are my favorite episodes of yours

Ben

ok something strange occurred which I thought I would share especially since you like Lynch. I listened to “Columnated Ruins” A, B, C and D and then happened to watch “My Son My Son, What Have Ye Done” which is a Herzog film produced by Lynch. And I was very much interpreting it via the ideas present in those first three episodes. It just so happens to be about an ostensibly schizoaffective guy bordering on a modern Holy Fool (played by Michael Shannon) who acts out the plot of Orestes except in broad suburban daylight, thus killing his own mother. Then you mentioned Orestes in this episode. The film very much seems to me about primordial time, a certain type of subjective breakdown between the real and the theatre bleeding into one another as it were, spiraling/mutating history etc. I thought you may be interested if you haven’t heard of it.

Isn’t it “colonnaded” ruins domino? As in a row of classical columns collapsing onto each other?
