Madra na Móna

Gas man George Formby. Unbelievable "When I'm cleaning windows" got airtime back then.

Hey Michael, I’m currently watching M: Son of the Century and it’s got me reading a lot about the Italian flavor of fascism. Do you have any insights or thoughts on Italo Balbo? He received a hero’s welcome to Chicago in 1933. He was escorted by the American Air Force, dined with FDR, and was given the honorary Sioux name of Chief Flying Eagle. He even has several streets named after him, and he gifted us with a fascist monument, which is still standing in a prominent downtown Chicago park. What a strange character who received

👏👏👏

Escheloned Confusions

Channeling my inner Felix here: at 1:15:15, "death defeated would throw life completely out of balance" is basically the central plot of Elden Ring.

Other considerations with lyrics. 1) Do you think "domino" is a play on the dative case version of Latin dominus and the huge significance that word has in Church music history? 2) I'm pretty sure muted trumpeter's swan is also a joke about mute swans.

I have no dog in this fight but Boston is lovely, especially in the colder months. Assuming you feel this way for “White NBA Twitter Guy” reasons, which is fine.

Bryn Nieboer

holy shit, this series has been one of my favorites in a long time, but this episode was an all timer. incredible

I wish the primary concept, which I heavily appreciate, didn’t also evoke the name of a particularly flamboyant and ridiculous 90s metal band.

NYCM&AHole

We had a gym teacher called schlomo in middle school and you can guess what nickname a bunch of 12 and 14 year old boys in the mid 90s made up for him.

Sean

It’s Doc!

Room2live

subscribed just for this series and then went in deep. it’s been excellent. i was wondering if you could point me towards any resources on understanding coltranes approach to harmony?

Drew LaBarre

This episode is so unbelievably good!

Curious to know if you’d ever do an ep on Kate Bush’s THE DREAMING. I think you’ve mentioned in a few times when talking about aboriginal cosmology and the songlines. And (beyond the fact its in the name of the album), thinking about The Dream and The Theater always leads me back to that record. That four song run from Suspended in Gaffa to Night of the Swallow feels like one of the most manic and desperate attempts to claw back down into The Dream when the whole world is being swallowed by The Theater. Its something I’ve been meaning to write a full-on essay about cause I’ve been stewing on it since I first heard the album, and these episodes are turning the gears for sure.

Hey if you need any visual art for the new show, I'd love to help. Particularly if you have any concepts in mind you'd like to see illustrated/fleshed out. Also, the other day I overhead my podcast-hating girlfriend talking to her sister on the phone, recommending that she should listen to DEATH/CORNER and that the host is a "warlock."

Roberto Andrés Lantadilla

Ok, this is peak D/C. Or as the golden god Dennis Reynolds would put it, "I haven't even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you'll know."

Torgeir Tannenwald

Thanks for fucking me up in the best ways possible through this journey. Especially the end. So worth the build-up.

From Lot 49: “Either you have stumbled indeed, without the aid of LSD or other indole alkaloids, onto a secret richness and concealed density of dream… or you are hallucinating it.” And later: “For there either was some Tristeto beyond the appearance of the legacy America, or there was just America and if there was just America then it seemed the only way she could continue… was as an alien, unfurrowed, assumed full circle into some paranoia.”

Furthermore I am standing on biz when I say that Massachusetts has the worst vibes of any state in the USA

Byron’s Glowing Filament

Fucking amazing man. Sorry for the long post but this song became very important for me even though I’d never heard it before you started talking about it. One of my favorite readings of the line “columnated ruins domino” has been the idea of a historical dominoing in the sense of a palimpsest of ruins continuing to topple onto each other, being rebuilt on the corpse of other cities or civilizations, falling to the same fate. All which heavily reminds me so much of Pynchon. Specifically Enzian’s vision of the post-war state as he is seeking out Maria to prevent the forced abortion by the Empty Ones. How he sees the industries of the pre and contemporary WWII state purposefully falling only for new, planned industries/factories being built over them. Or in IV where (I can’t remember the character name) but the black man comes to talk to Doc to talk about how his neighborhood is gone. Not just destroyed, but gone. And new housing complexes are being built over it. Or even the fascist technostate being built upon the bones of the Twin Towers a la Bleeding Edge. And on another note, because fuck there are so many tie ins… But the idea of the ‘child’ being the only one who can see the atrocities for what they are, thus being our only possible savior, is probably one of only hopeful motifs in modern art that I continue to come across. Whether it’s Pynchon’s end to Bleeding Edge, PKD’s ending to Radio Free Albemuth (which no one reads but fuck me they should…), or whatever else (I know there are way more but I can’t remember them off the top of my head right now). The fact that he ends the damn song with that is so important to me. And it being a children’s SONG, not a child’s dream or some theatrical performance. But a song.

*Godard's Professor Pluggy voice* Monsieur Brian Wilson I recall someone really talking up the recording tech for Buddy Holly records. Any thoughts on that?

John Waaben

Trumpeter Swans are North America’s heaviest endemic bird and almost went extinct in the 1930s. Mute Swans are an invasive species and followed European colonization by occupying ponds around the world. They are also VERY aggressive towards people and other wildlife. Another Holocaust layer to the song?

Capital Knockers

I would definitely go for a musical breakdown of surfs up. And i'd love a musical breakdown of Til i die. The piano only demo of that, and this search for feeling in those chords, connects it to the greatest of the Smile songs. That description of macca on i want to tell you, was great to and them in a feedback loop creating the dream. Did you read John Higgs book Love and Let Die about the beatles and bond?

abby

Apologies for posting thru it and if you already mentioned this. But on the tidal wave and (pre)colonial themes — the cover art of surf’s up always reminded me of the tarot image of Death, which is associated with water (transformation, universal solvent, the distinct evocation of drowning on a lot of the songs). I looked it up and it turns out it’s a painting of a sculpture called “the end of the trail.” From Wikipedia: “Fraser takes inspiration for End of the Trail from his experiences as a boy in the Dakota Territory. His memoirs state, "as a boy, I remembered an old Dakota trapper saying, 'The Indians will someday be pushed into the Pacific Ocean.'" Later he stated "the idea occurred to me of making an Indian which represented his race reaching the end of the trail, at the edge of the Pacific."”

Man, sorry if this request is stupid, but, i would’ve loved to hear an example of the chords you’re explaining.

William G Farmer Jr

I'm going to experiment with tuning the low E/sixth string down to a D, and let the D drone while I play an d minor arpeggio (root n5th string/fifth fret. What would be another chord I could play after the d minor? I would like to record the open D drone onto a loop, then loop two chords cycling on another loop, then improvise over the drone and chords. F#minor 7th?

Three totally unimportant things I’d like to contribute to the comments section at large 1) Tyrone Slothrop described by Tantivy Mucker-Maffick as “an American George Formby, if you can imagine such a thing” personally I like to imagine Slothrop as looking exactly like George Formby. 2) “There Is A Hand To Turn The Time” works nearly PERFECTLY with the melody of “auld lang syne”. Considering it’s “to a popular air of the day” (17th century when William Slothrop lived) I think that’s a strong contender! 3) I’d just like to submit for the record post-Weather Report Wayne Shorter for some insanely good & seriously under-appreciated slash chord heavy composition at least within the jazz genre…the very underdiscussed 80s & 90s albums (High Life, Joy Ryder, Atlantis, Phantom Navigator) and Alegria.
