“There is no foreign policy and domestic policy, there is only…policy.” Could not have possibly said it better myself. This is the Reich distilled down to its essence.

Just discovered this podcast and have been binging it all week. Is there a reading list anywhere for the show? If not, any book recommendations related to topics covered on here would be appreciated.

Why can i not find a single reading of bolaño that references jewish mysticism. When Caesarea Tinajero is named after a well known roman outpost on jewish land, her poem is named “zion”, and the messianic age in kabbalah begins around the year 2240 (hebrew year 6000), she speaks of the days to come (the messianic age is called the age to come or the world to come). Cesarea — caesarean To cut Tinajero — maker of clay jars Pandora’s jar/pithos Anyone with a cursory understanding of Kabbalah knows the significance of broken jars. “Sión” A femanine noun forming suffix. Attached to verbs to form abstract nouns. Decisión, for example. The fall from paradise is a movement from unity to multiplicity, from peace into chaos In this chaotic world, the mountain top, zion, is symbolically dense… the temple mount. Zion became symbolic for everything lost, everything that was once whole now in exile. Apparently Natasha Wimmer is working on poetry translation with Mexican-Palestinian Gabriel Zaid. We need the intel.

Great opener. My prog-loving late father raised me to have the utmost respect for Peter Gabriel, and the utmost contempt for the vile usurper Phil Collins.

Saw a NYT headline about the snuff film of ICE murdering a mother in broad daylight that said, in effect: Witnesses say it was murder, the Administration says it was self defense. Video shows… NUANCE

Hello MSJ, only halfway through the episode right now but I want to stop and comment now so I don’t forget. I was born in the mid-90’s. As you described, despite regular gestures towards how crazy-making the media spectacle of the Iraq War was for people one microgeneration older than me, I’ve never read or heard anything from anyone worth trusting laying out the events and mood of those years. Don’t know if you’d consider taking a swing at it but I believe it would be a great public service if you did.

I think maybe this is simply what decline looks and feels like. Decades and decades of keeping the quiet part quiet through procedural buffoonery and institutional chicanery by people who were smart enough to understand you needed the veil. Probably it isn't even a question of intelligence: the system these second and third and fourth generation sociopaths have been handed now has a different set of boxes which need to be checked in order to guarantee upward mobility - or maybe even just holding onto the place they have. Part of me thinks this will end because of the obvious unsustainability of it; I used to think that America wouldn't go full fascist based on the idea that we had the chance in the 30's and didn't choose it then so... but now, I think it's entirely possible that as a mass populace we're so broken and isolated and demoralized and AGGRIEVED - despite the relative plenty and security that being in the richest country in the world should generate, the lived experience of it is one of running away from the slowly moving fortnite wall as it constantly closes in behind you - that we can give inter-war Germany a run for it's money (first as tragedy then as farce hahaha). Except this time there's no race to see who gets the bomb first, and we're the motherfuckers who already understand the "utility" and "strategic importance" of using nukes, and so the only real question is where will that inevitably happen? I'm sure that Draft Kings or Fan Duel will generate odds and let you place a bet.

Two Latinos were shot by Feds here in Portland the day after Renee was killed. Shortly afterward, it was announced that the Feds were going to do an investigation… I’m going to go fucking crazy.

I really adore the Gold & Youth outro music so much

It's not just by creating the opportunity for cross-border labor arbitrage that NAFTA made the maquiladora system. One of the main neoliberal "market reforms" the Mexican government instituted under the treaty was to allow the sale and privatization of ejidos, the communally-owned farming cooperatives that were the signal achievement of Mexican Revolution-era land reform. At the same time , NAFTA flooded the Mexican food system with mega-subsidized American corn, collapsing the rural economy and creating a population of dispossessed, desperate internal migrants forced to trek North to the sprawling, miserable slums around places like Juarez.

My come to Jesus moment was the first time I heard Madeline Albright's reply "we think the price is worth it". until you actually hear these fuckers in their own voice it just hits different. I try holding back tears Everytime I hear it echo through my head. Fucking monstrosity.

similar age and demographic to you, had the same experience with disillusionment from 9/11 and Iraq and then running into the facts of the other 9/11 (1973). As a teen, learning about Chile specifically was also really the one that disabused me of the idea that the world order was based on following the rules, or even the necessity of confrontation between opposed ideological positions -- it is solely about how you'd better not fuck with the money. I think for that historical moment we grew up in, if there was anything close to a skeleton key that could start to unlock an accurate understanding (for gringos) of what the 20th century was about, I think it would be that overlay of 9/11, 1973 onto the world of post-9/11, 2001. Also (oddly) thankful for gaining that clarity while young, despite it meaning a closing off of all the success I could have found as a professional Bringer of Nuance. Hard to be jealous of someone like ezra klein when you understand that careers like his are built on the insights he doesn't have that have therefore not prevented him from not having any kind of humanizing moral/ethical commitment to the world. Liberal democracy's version of the court eunuch is somehow even less dignified than getting your shit fully cut off.

Thinking a lot about Moby Dick these past days, and the idea that the story wouldn't have been told if the narrator hadn't by chance survived the catastrophe of the quest. Insight didn't save anyone morally, politically, narratively. No one was redeemed by understanding the violence they participated in. Bodies become oil, oil becomes light for industry, while the deck is drenched in blood.

It was only on my second listen to this episode that a light bulb went on in my head - a place where the authorities say there's x murdered women, but the families who lost loved ones think it's 10+x? We got that in Canada.
