At times, I heard society and magnets. Now I hear the magnets only. I've been to the surface, and nothing is there.

@15:30 something that's struck me in accounts of the GWOT by antiwar vets in the Prysner/Harp vein is that this is also the primary mode for combat troops in those wars. If you're not a rarefied JSOC ear collector, your job consists overwhelmingly of walking from place to place in the hope that someone will shoot at you so you, or your surviving buddies, can briefly return fire until air support levels the entire horizon.

Boffo's last dance for Biffo the Bear? Lord Snooty and his pals in suspended animation in the St. Anne's Limehouse Pyramid? Fred Karno's Army in Tehran? More on the wireless after teatime.

Can you recommend Iliad and Odyssey translations that aren't Robert Fagles' translations? Please and thank you.

Mike this intro is deeply unpleasant, as a Brit I might have to skip this one and instead finally read lud heat/suicide bridge properly. I assume this was your intention. Thank you

MSJ- when are you going to define alchemical index? Is it related to Walter Benjamin's Sixth Thesis on the concept of history?

Priscilla (Pussycat) is one of your top 5 characters/ voices. The sound like a slightly more straight Milo

Oh and if anyone cares to hear it, maybe the best use of any of Brando’s monologues from Apocalypse Now, check out the song Karsey Street by Poison the Well. I can’t hear any of those scenes without thinking of that song

Can’t we all just get along like Amazon and Raytheon coming together to make a drone to bring us lunch and kill their sons in a synergistic two-for-one?

Hi Michael, I don’t know much about theology but your take on Paul has me intrigued. Where can I read more about why you think he’s such a bummy fraud?

Gouda cheese part triggered a recent experience. Was trying to get through to an idiot co-worker when I got them on the defensive and they resorted to pretending to have actual experiences, but were very obviously fox news type shit hoax/manufactured outrage shit. Literally got the guy claiming he pulled daughter out of school cause they wanted to put in litter boxes, he saw someone using food stamps to buy king crab, and someone at grocery store got mad at him for saying merry Christmas, and told him he should say happy holidays. Shocking to have real life encounters with these freeeks, always half assumed people who pretend to believe such shit are mostly 60 plus year old white amerikkkans. Guess they also come in the seemingly normal 30 something variety as well. AmeriKKKa!

Speaking of epic poems and translations, is there an english translation of The Divine Comedy that you'd recommend that actually reads like poetry? And doesn't suffer from translator-itis/translatorese?

“My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me” is the first line of psalm 22. Psalms are titled or refered to by their first line, and seeing as they’re songs, the assumption is that jesus is singing the first lines of a well known song. To accurately interpret eli eli lama sabachthani in the gospel, you have to read the full psalm.

How on earth does somebody from Missouri even know that an accent such as Priscilla's exists let alone then manage to carry it off - incredible . I guess the internet does have it's uses. You know during one election Mandelson visited his constituency of Hartlepool which is a town in the north of England - very poor, deprived fishing industry which had been destroyed - as far from metropolitan elites as possible during his walk about he visited a chip shop and whilst posing for the press happily tucking into the bag of chips he was offered a pot containing a green looking paste/sauce " oh lovely, I like guacamole " said Mr Mandelson . It was actually mushy peas. Fantastic episode

I’ve just kept my mouth shut for a few years. They’ll tell you to unionise your workplace. You’ll tell them you did, and that you lost your job and became homeless as a result. Silent weapons for quiet wars and all that. As an aside, few years ago I kept saying “Starmer will do genocide, segregate trans people from public life, and appoint Peter Mandelson, who is a paedophile” and all the people in my life at the time would treat me like I’d been having an episode of acute psychosis

If you go carryin’ pictures of Chairman Mao/You ain’t gonna make it with Michael Judge anyhow

It pains me to admit it but it must be noted- Rock and Roll #2 is, ****unfortunately, a banger.

Byron’s Glowing Filament

Wait you’re telling me it’s not accurate that Agamemnon wore matte black Star Wars armor that looked to be in perfect condition after 10 years of a siege? Crazy. If I ever decided to teach Homer again I will be playing them your discussion of Homer in the latter part of this episode. Hopefully not forgetting to stop it before you start talking about pedos again lol. And tbh, your discussion of all this did make me want to teach it again even if it’s pretty fucking hard to get a bunch of fifteen year olds to buy into reading Homer… Thanks as always for a great ep.

i’ll hopefully have irish citizenship within the next 4-5 years and irish birthright will be up and running for any irish catholics who need to be in a country with health care an schools without occupational mass shootings

@1:52 this is exactly what drove me crazy about that story from a couple months ago about the group of ICE agents who had lunch at a Mexican restaurant in suburban Minnesota and then came back at closing time to fuck up and seize the very people who cooked for and served them a few hours prior. Like, from central Asia, to the Mediterranean world, to Europe etc. *so many* ancient mythic/storytelling traditions emphasize the rights and respect due between guest and host. What does it mean when you can betray the people who gave you bread to no consequence? We don't have a society.

James Aydelotte

Hearing the discussion on grinding the common people into paste to further enhance the impossible wealth of extremely few- I remember the father oof Peter Thiel- a man of importance in apartheid S. Africa who made sure the uranium mine he was a bigwig in the extractive execution of watched his employees get cancer of every kind and go back to their slums while the executors of the mine- white men in space suits- would go on to run that uranium on up to Israel just to make sure those chosen people could slaughter with the impunity and seraphic force of nuclear fire… that is the order we are all in service of….

I just realized I’m now half a decade older than Joe Strummer was when he died. MF DOOM being gone these past few years means there are basically no real ones left. So yes, culture and society no longer exist for us in the west.

We already have an epic of our time: Operation Epic Fury

Has anyone else made this analysis of the Homeric epics re: society? I think it’s fucking genius. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else give such a clear example of what society is, how it came to be, and what it means to not have one. Really reduced the concept of a society to first principles, and i agree completely that what we have is arguably not one.

There is a slightly different timeline where Pussycat shows up in The Thick Of It to drive Malcolm Tucker further to drink and apoplexy
