I'm not entirely decided about this yet, but my inclination is to end the show.  I feel I've done most of what I came here to do, and my mind has never been in worse shape; I'm either incapacitated by fear or on suicide watch about 99% of the time.  Feel free to respond below if you have a strong opinion, but other than that, I don't know if there's a reason to do it anymore.

I've got my own hard times which are in a alternate time stub to yours and I can't ever know what it's like to be in your head, but just know I look forward to each of your podcasts each time one drops and they get me through and beyond some bullshit times in my own head. that's all I gotta say

Faroose

MJ I’ve listened to every ep of your show and always look forward to it, but I think most people would agree you should do what’s best for you personally. Whatever you decide, we’ll be behind you. If you take time off and come back 6 months, a year, five years from now, I’m here for it. Above all, please take care of yourself. We appreciate you and need voices like yours in the world.

Scorched Earth Hippie

I empathize, as I also spend most of my time trying to stay alive. I deeply appreciate what you've put out to this World. That said, mad love, respect and you do you boo.

M Bialystock

I love your work. Your podcast has been present during difficult periods of my life and I’ve found your insights and skills comforting. I also have a pretty serious chronic health problem, so hearing you put together these infinitely relistenable hours of audio has made me feel better about my own situation. That said, please do whatever you need to for your health. While I’ll miss hearing you greatly, I’d much prefer to know that you’re alive and maybe even happy. If this really is curtains, thanks for everything you’ve put out. What a fuckn’ back catalogue.

I have a strong opinion: just keep doing it. You are important for a lot of people including me( you have no idea, man) and i'm pretty sure this is important for you too, as a whole.

This show changed my life. Every episode has taught me something important or helped me focus the lense through which I navigate “reality”. If you were to sit in front of a microphone and riff off on any subject, unprepared, it would be valuable to a lot of us. If time off is needed, so be it. But my life and the world would be worse off without this show.

Anonymous

love the show, michael, it has enriched my life, but certainly do what is best for you personally.

I don't have much to add here, and whatever you think is best to stay as well as you can, you need to do. We're not going to go anywhere, and we're all here for you,

Biels Nohr

MJ, at the end of the day you're going to do what you know is best for you, and that's fine, I can tell from listening that you're not someone to make spontaneous, uncalculated decisions, so I trust you to make the best move. That being said, I'd be damned if I didn't tell you how great this podcast is. I have no formal education in literature or philosophy, and I don't live in a place where people outwardly discuss totalizing schemes in modernist literature, so internet communities are very important to me. The amount of subjects you're knowledgeable about is as far reaching as anyone I've ever met, which makes discussions about modern polymaths like Pynchon or Pound infinitely better here than on any shitty imageboard. I look up to you very much and only hope for the best.

Gianteye

I like the show. I think the world would be smaller without you or this branch of your work going through it. If there’s stuff I or we can do to help make things better for you, just say the word.

As someone who is chronically depressed to similar abysmal depths, and is in a similar boat seemingly paralyzed at a crossroads, I empathize greatly with what you're going through. This show has been a bright spot and frankly, the work you've put in has made this one of the best podcasts out there today. Of course, I hope all the support here encourages you to keep going on with the show, but do what's best for your health first.

as a rather new listener i gotta say your insights on all topics but particularly on literature and art aside from genius are an absolute breath of fresh air. i became a patron as soon as i heard you on corey peins news from nowhere and this is honestly my favorite podcast now. its incredibly sharp as fuck and intelligent commentary which is very rare these days. maybe im being selfish but i would love to hear more of what you have to say on future episodes.

Jerry Stahl

Man, have a little mercy on the world and hang in. Whatever hell you’re choking

on - the shows are spectacular.

MJ, I can understand that personal issues sometimes are the only issues that matter, but there is a larger context: a committed audience. I wouldn't care if the episodes were done with no prep, no notes... I still value your pov. If it truly is an impossibility to continue we would understand, but the show really is something I look forward to a lot.

Jonathan Schultz

I would love to hear to talk about Pynchon for years, say nothing of any of the other topics you illuminate. You need to take care of you. It has been a truly amazing run of shows, and just as others have mentioned, they have helped me through difficult times. You command a unique talent. Please do what you can to take care of yourself and ease your worried mind.

Mike Bilbe-Taylor

Out of selfishness, I would love it for you to continue on, because I fucking love this podcast. The art as terrorism series is some absolutely incredible work and has introduced me to Iain Sinclair (for which I am grateful). Beyond my own selfishness. Again, like many others, I know that depression is a hell of a fucking cunt and it's debilitating effects are awful. So as a fellow traveller along that lonely road, I hope you would do what is best for you, podcast or no. All the best, Michael

my heart goes out to you brother sending all my positive vibes and positive energy through a deep meditation tonight and every night 🙏🏽🧘🏽‍♂️

Robert

But MSJ if you end the podcast and community, how will anyone know where to find the episodes pre-82? Other than that, I trust in whatever you decide to do and hope sincerely (if it's what you want to do) that you publish that book on Bowie! Gotta stay true to what works for you man!

Literally the only important thing is that you are okay. If you cannot do this any more and it is negatively impacting your mental health then stop doing it. If it suits you better to release once a month (or whenever suits you) then switch to that. If it is all that keeps you going then stick with it but at whatever pace benefits you most. Your supporters want to hear you and we each of us value your time, effort and research enough to seek you out and put our money down. You're not our dancing monkey and again, if this isn't helping you, walk away, but you are clearly valued by a lot of folks out here. Finally, I know that this is hard work, fighting your own brain included, but you set an example of mental fortitude that you should be immensely proud of. Every time a new episode drops, every time you tweet, I relax a little bit because it means I know you're still there, hanging on with nothing but sheer determination. It helps me deal with my problems because if you can do it, so can I.

I would really miss the show if you stopped - I always look forward to getting the email notification when a new ep drops. Of course, if you feel that putting out episodes isn’t good for your health then it’s best you stop. Have you considered doing maybe just one episode a month? Again though, you have to put your health first.

Tribulation 49

I can only reiterate what has been said above: it is always a pleasure listening to your shows, and I appreciate you creating something that has brought a lot of misfits & esoterics together (you’ve drawn so many threads together in my own mind). But your health is priority. Love from the UK!

Benjamin Robinson

The show, and thus you, are important to everyone here. If doing the show helps you feel better, even a little, then it’s worth doing. If it doesn’t help, then I hope all of our love and support does. I hope it gets easier and I love you lots.

Ryan Kane

I'm really sorry to hear this given that your pod has become easily one of my absolute favorites over the last couple months. Your perspective and insights are really unique and helpful. With that said, your own well being and mental health should definitely come first!

Anonymous

Obviously your well being should come first and if you think you need to stop then you should. I appreciate all the knowledge that you've shared and have looked forward to every podcast almost religiously. Struggling with my own mental health problems I know how precarious things can be. If you ever get to a point where you think you can start this back up I know there will an audience waiting. And if you never start it back up that's ok too. You've done some great work.

Your mental health is the most important thing. If the show stresses you out—quit. It’s fine; you’ve given us so much. However, I love the show and would be sad not to have your voice in my mind a couple times a month. If you need to talk, shoot me a DM. Me and my Roommate are your biggest fans and talk about you and your insights a lot. Take care man.

Brotendo

You’ve made absolutely essential work and I hope you’re proud of what you’ve done in this podcast because you should be. I had just finished Gravity’s Rainbow when I found this podcast and it’s been a blessing in my life and has given me a lens through which to view the world. I know you have much more to talk about but I just want you to do what’s best for you. you’ve given more than enough. Please take care of yourself, MJ! Definitely don’t this anymore if it’s stressing you out. Thanks for everything. You’re one of the best minds I’ve ever had the privilege to hear. These words won’t ever do you justice. Thank you.

Lena

This show means a lot to me, and I would miss it for sure. However, you have to put your health first. There's nothing wrong with taking a hiatus - maybe take a break and see if you feel like returning in a few months? Either way, we all respect your decision.

Anonymous

You make the most interesting podcast that I'm aware of. I would miss it if you decided to stop but I'd rather you stayed currently incarnated for a while, if only for me to selfishly consume any future stuff you produce. There isn't anything else like death/corner, and that is because of you and the stuff in your head. If making it is causing your brain to crumble then stop doing it. Or if you just need to take a break take a break. I'm pretty much just echoing sentiments others have already expressed. I'm also more than happy to keep chucking a little money your way even if there's nothing coming out for a while or ever even. Take care of yourself mate.

Root Simple

I only started listening to your podcast recently after you appeared on Corey Pein's show. Then I couldn't stop listening. You have an incredible gift for explaining complex material in a way that's understandable without ever being condescending. You are the kind of person who should be a college professor if only our academic system wasn't just a corrupt middle class admittance tax. Will greatly miss your podcast but as others have said you should put your health first. I'm also happy to stay a Patreon subscriber even if you never do another show. Take care of yourself and hope you feel better soon.

Keep it up man. And take of of yourself. You’re important and appreciated
