It started as a Q&A, it became a 45-minute rant about high crimes & misdemeanors in Ferguson.

And truly, you owe yourself an image search for "Veiled Prophet Ball."

I actually started in on 2666 and when i got the the maquiladoras and the pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of femicides, uuuuuh i had to put it down. It was too punishing for me at that time. But hearing you talk about it i feel like i should try again.

I am going through the back-catalog, and this is the only show with a tag and mention of Cormac McCarthy, which occurs in the last 5 minutes of this show.... I am leaving this comment for anyone else with an interest in McCarthy. I have read 6 of his novels, and I believe Michael is on target with his assessment here, as later novels like The Passenger and Stella Maris are indeed full of name-dropping and McCarthy being a bit too full of himself. The comments by Michael have aged well, as new data since McCarthy's death do indeed show him acting somewhat like the main character, the judge, in Blood Meridian, with his hoarding of items, multiple marriages, and most notably his fascination with very young women (with some accusing him of possibly having interacted with Epstein). I know that sometimes you are supposed to separate the artists away from the art, but I am not finding the life of Cormac McCarthy to be something worth emulating, and many of his novels depict disgusting things that do not make me feel spiritually better. However, I have not yet read some of the earlier novels by McCarthy, which others say do an amazing job of depicting nature scenes. As such, a huge caveat is that I need to read All the Pretty Horses, Suttree, and some of his other work. That being said, having read Blood Meridian, The Road, Passenger/Stella Maris (2 connected novels), Child of God, and Outer Dark, I have not found his work to be all that compelling, whereas I find Shakespeare and Pynchon to be endlessly fascinating, very enjoyable, and worth deep re-reading. Obviously, my opinion on all of this might change as I read further, but I wanted to leave this here in case anyone else wishes to engage regarding Cormac McCarthy. I also know that some argue that the early work of an author (like Gravity's Rainbow with Pynchon) can possibly be the very best, so that is why I should read the earlier work from McCarthy, which I will be doing this year 2026.

These new episodes are really making going back into a covid infested workplace bearable

@Pope Amen Specklebird and anyone else interested in Bruno Schulz, there's the 1973 Wojciech Has film 'The Hourglass Sanatorium' mentioned in the show but I'd also recommend the Quay brothers' 1986 film 'Street of Crocodiles'. The latter is a stop-motion animation which, like Has' film, isn't a literal adaptation but still manages to capture the slightly eerie melancholy that often pervades Schulz's writing.

hey your answer to my question was perfect because the tangential hippie friend I mentioned was also in the OTO and he for sure seems like a dude who would be jerking off with other dudes in a basement. but on what you touched on, I would fuckin looooove an L Ron episode or series or whatever. there's so much there and so much I know I don't know about it and him. so glad to have you back, in any case. even if it's only temporary.

Just wanted to say I’m very happy to have been introduced to this podcast and your work. Every time I find an artist or writer who makes me feel like “I haven’t the foggiest idea what this person will do next,” it’s a massive relief.

Question for future q/a: Does Andy Kaufman fit your concept of the ‘shamanic artist’? Great work - take care of yourself!

Is the title a reference to The New Pornographers?
