D/C Cinématique, vol. 2: in the Year of Epstein's Ghost, uncontested movie god Will Menaker of Chapo Trap House joins MSJ to revisit Eyes Wide Shut as the first proto-/post-Epstein movie and a labyrinthine political nightmare in which class fantasizes about class fantasizing about class as it fantasizes about ...

Paul reminded his listeners of this one!! Just gave it another listen. Such great stuff, MSJ!

This was very enjoyable, but this sort of conjecture discounts the idea that Kubrick may just literally have been slipping in his old age. I love Kubrick’s work but maybe some things in the film don’t work because he was old, an OCD-style shut-in from society, out of practice, and maybe sickly too. Hate to say it but Kubrick could just be missing a step in his older age. Secondly, while I think it’s fascinating to consider the orgy as a stand-in for Epstein stuff - there’s something that just doesn’t fit that interpretation. I think you can’t just easily replace all the masked women at the ball with children because Bill meets the “speedball” woman earlier in the film and then again at the masked party. Bill meets her mask-less and of age. Don’t see a good reason why Bill would have been OK with an OD’d child in his friend’s bathroom.

Spielberg didn't "take" anything from AI.. if anything Kubrick sort of dropped the project into his lap and they co-produced it

Something that I always found funny about Eyes Wide Shut and cemented that the presentation was based on some sort of dream / unreliable narrator is that every single person Tom Cruise encounters in that movie immediately falls in love with him (most notably the desk clerk at the hotel). It's so over-the-top, that only the world filtered through a narcissist's insecure eyes could be seen that way.

Banger episode! Always appreciate hearing Will in a one on one setting and not in the host sort of role.

What's the deeper story about the Spielberg stalker--is it this Jonathan Norman guy?

I went to see what Todd Field has done... And he's Ol' Drippy from fucking Aqua Teen

My gosh, I'm so lucky I found you guys for comradely and love of film. More Will and MSJ film discussion pods please! Great episode and film choice, thanks! Both of your Twitter's rock!

I too think Barry Lyndon is the best Kubrick movie. As a pestilential Irishman my dislike of Ryan O' Neal's accent is overcome only by the joy of Patrick Magee in a powdered wig.

DumbDumDumbDumb

GoFundMe to reverse engineer the heart attack gun that got Kubrick

Will Loomis

Kubrick was creepy with Kidman throughout the entire shoot

MOLTEN

Love it

Brandon Onda

Is that true with Ryan O'Neal and Kubrick's daughter? Also, I'm having trouble finding more info on Spielberg's stalker

Chrus

This was awesome. Would love to hear more movie episodes from you after these last two. Particularly interested to hear your thoughts on Oliver Stone's JFK

Nightingale is called nightingale in the book as well so I guess that theory falls flat ... But otherwise a very compelling discussion. Could've mentioned the kubrick cameo in the sonata club, but who am I to complain ...

"Eyes Wide Shut as the first proto-/post-Epstein movie." Ah guys, have you seen Kubrick's adaptation of Lolita? Peter Sellers is Jeffrey Epstein in that movie! I mean, if, like Matt Christman, you think that Epstein was filling a role of 'procurement and supply' of underage sex slaves for the ultra wealthy, a role that was filled before him (and presumably will be after him), then it's very, very easy to see the Peter Sellers character in Lolita as filling that same role. There's even references to his creepy ranch. He even has a female 'assistant'...

Gustave Courbet

Great episode, definitely expanded my understanding/appreciation for the film. A suggestion on further film analysis: “Bob Roberts.” Easily one of the best explorations of American political power in all its unvarnished psychopathy, and very entertaining as well. Thanks again!

Rob Keery

strong Jordan Peterson & daughter vibes off the image of the costumier there

Olen Koira

did a certain director have a history with a certain stalker??????

falling down the rabbit hole about the spielberg stalker...god what a creepy story! sounds the guy (jonathan norman) was obsessed with david geffen too...

Sam

Yeah, wow, the Nightingale path, very interesting...if you were to go further, or maybe closer, besides the title, which clearly points us in the directions you’re suggesting, the movie is stamped with CRIUSE KIDMAN...

John_PDX

What's the deal with the Ryan O'Neal and Kubrick's daughter?! I've never heard that before.
