Pod pinp Matt Christman (@cushbomb) of Chapo Trap House returns to unearth the thematic and Scientological secrets of Paul Thomas Anderson's brilliant 2012 film The Master.

(Apologies for the slight echo on Matt's voice, which is entirely my fault.)

P.S. I see the “manifesting” paradigm throughout all the entirety of the apparent political spectrum and had never been able to express why it’s so repulsive; didn’t expect you to draw a line from PSH to The Secret to present day on this, but that’s the good stuff, baby!!! P.P.S. how would you qualify or categorize LRH // Lancaster Dodd’s accents? So familiar to me, but honestly don’t know what it’s called. Deep Mid-Atlantic Philly or what?

what's missing from this and what I would've hoped you would get to in light of the discussion about how the master fits into PTAs filmography is the evolution of his earlier movies about healing and mentorship - from dirk digglers broken glasses at the end of boogie nights, to the divine intervention at the end of magnolia, to the two opposites forming a whole in punch drunk love - in the first half of his career to ideas of irreconcilability and the demonic mentor/father during the second half reflecting on his earlier films after having kids n shit ... the impotence and shallowness of the Paul Dano preacher/healer, the master and in inherent vice for example the mental clinic being part of the vertically integrated golden fang/US government/capital ......... also no mention of the beginning borrowing from John Hustons 'let there be light' documentar; no mention, of the motorcycle sequence --- nothing about the healing practices mirroring filmmaking (imagination practices, hypnotherapy, exposure, finding your way between light and shadow); nothing about, paradoxically, all that shit working since Freddie doesn't flip out when he learns about Doris being married, not drinking hard liquor at the end but only beer; nothing about Freddie repeating the Masters questions in the last scene; nothing about the way PTAs script and visuals playing off of one another (take the 'dragon-scene' for example, the way he cuts to Freddie once the dragon is mentioned - Masters, and by extension PTAs, control fantasy when it comes to Freddie ...; or even casper the friendly ghost playing in the cinema near the end); nothing ... well, fuck it deeply disappointed with the discussion about the film - even though I agree with the sentiments expressed throughout esp the last 15 minutes. it needed more of a will menaker style play by play approach imo instead of pointing to little bits and pieces and saying "see?! it IS about scientology!" its like yea dude everybody knows but you never get into where the sympathetic elements come from which is PTAs self awareness of being a weirdo in search and need of salvation through filmmaking and being a director of cult films with a cult following - both sides playing off of each other and being commented upon in this movie which is why its his best. the film being about scientology is besides the point in a two part series where you wanna explore what scientology is about .. right, PIGFUCK?! (good bit on the Greenwood score tho)

Upon finally finishing this episode, I gotta say. You two have like the most perfect minds to synthesize and express so many of the frustrations that come with decoding how the world kicks, how politics gets it shape, and how capitalism fucks us over. I'm so grateful that you guys are doing this stuff

Incredible episode. mumbling “frontier mindset” to myself now whenever one of my fellow early twenty year olds does the manifesting bullshit you two discussed.

Eric Young

Great episode on one of the best films of all time, which your discussion has re-introduced me to from a whole new perspective.

An absolutely top-notch discussion guys. I love the topics you pick Michael and then in addition you get the comfort eagle himself to discuss a brilliant movie.

This was an amazing episode. Wonderful breakdown on cult psychology and how it works. Especially loved the observation re: Lancaster's expressive style, how needlessly overcomplicated it is. Totally disagree with Alexander above, who bizarrely seems disappointed that podcast didn't discuss information easily gleaned from any press interview for the film, or simply by watching the film itself. I guess he was disappointed this pod didn't tell him what he already knew...? As a big PTA fan and an especial fan of this film, I found this podcast pure pleasure, an ideal and unique discussion.

Finally got a chance to watch it Inherent Vice last night. Very well done – just when you think the byzantine web of names and connections in the story is about to overwhelm, it starts to come together and make some sense. Then, I watched through to the end of the credits and was dismayed to see that one "Steven Mnuchin" was listed as executive producer. Mnuchin: long time Goldman Sachs lunatic and Trump's Secretary of Treasury, who takes his fashion tips from 1970s dictators. Seeing Mnuchin's name in the credits felt like one final paranoiac touch - except real, not part of the original story...
