The JFK reissues have persuaded me to pay my share of any pharmaceuticals you require Mike. Sending love from the desert

Adam Curtis has really strange political view. I've heard him call himself a libertarian before, but most of his work is seemingly critical of neoliberalism and free market ideology. His work is still great though.

Sátántango, Werckmeister Harmonies and Turin Horse are all fantastic movies. WH occupies persistent place in my top 5. Damnation also good but probably the most violently angry film I've seen. LK does all the screenplays. Tarr is a man with very firm moral convictions and a damn fine filmmaker. WH is even up in full on YouTube. Soundtracks are all bloody brilliant, composer Mihaly Vig and his band Balaton are super-cool. Tarr probably best movieman still alive honestly but he's sadly largely retired. Can't recommend them all highly enough.

Yeah Curtis works are absolutely stellar, but as Judge mentioned something is definitely off. I did some sleuthing years back and as it turns out he's connected to the "LM group". Great long gone blogpost on this here: https://web.archive.org/web/20131108200009/http://plover.net/~bonds/pandorasdocs.html. More on LM group : https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/1999/may/15/weekend7.weekend2 and https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v32/n13/jenny-turner/who-are-they

Satantango is best saved for the most miserable of winter days. I get a physical reaction to Bela Tarr's films and this one definitely breaks you down

I’ll be taking your thoughts on the American novel with me for a long time.

Any chance we can convince you to elaborate on that basketball/jazz thing after all? Asking as someone desperately in love with jazz who's never "gotten" basketball but always been incredibly curious

Dawson Highland

On another note, just found out that Maturana and Varela's work was also greatly influential for Stafford Beer, the British theorist that Allende brought in to head Project Cybersyn in 71. Cool connections!

Yo thanks for answering my question and for the compliment. Read Seiobo There Below if you're interested in more from Krasznahorkai.

A Q-Anon episode would be a good opportunity to go into psychological methods and practices of building a cult. This is relevant right up to the moment with HBO's documentary about the NXIVUM sex cult recently (which is a sort of Henry IV bar scene cult in which one of the cultists did a prior documentary as a marketing stunt for a cult and had enough footage for 10 episodes, which means on some level he was participating in and furthering a cult to promote his next cult documentary). Those of us who got humanities educations had the privilege of being introduced to rhetoric and the psych theories of the 20th century via Freud and Jung (and their successors), but most others who didn't (because high school is indoctrination and universities are intended to serve the technocracy, lets be honest) has probably never heard of such things. Your response to the Hegel question and thinking about Adam Curtis's frame of reference brings to mind the idea that America is hopelessly trapped in Hegel's dialectical progress theory whereas the Brits and other places in Europe may not be. The whole American project was founded based on a (physically) western progression toward some mercantile utopia. We can't get out of it because we are... it.

Ironic that James Cameron making Titanic was him kicking down the ladder on future James Camerons following his path

I think Rainer Werner Fassbinder could have directed Pynchon. Highly recommend his television adaptation of Berlin Alexandrplatz.

Very much looking forward to your episode about Nightwood!

Adam Curtis is a part of the LM Group. If you sleuth hard enough you can find info on it through Google. There is Reddit post with more articles on it and a main link to a blog called Plover that you can put into the Wayback Machine and revive, really recommended. Unfortunately Patreon won't let me post any links..

thanks for answering my question. i hadn't considered the perspective of "otherizing" the nazis while writing my paper on the occult aspects in my freshman year college writing class, the whole thing was definitely a bit cringe looking back now that im about to graduate. i wasn't trying to further that line of thought, more so was interested in your thoughts--and thats exactly what you gave us. would appreciate that episode on the propagation of the nazi mythos in connection with the occult whenever you get the chance! thanks again and hope you're doing well

on the "why are things declassified?" question, Blum's 'Killing Hope' is literally for free as a pdf by CIA.gov. Yer answer is correct, we are far away enough from those events and the people who'd be indicted are dead enough for it to just be another story.

thank you for answering my question and no worries nobody pronounces my last name right

Thank you for talking shit on Blade Runner 2049 and Southland Tales, two movies I despise and I always get pushback on

The Santiago cosmology sounds heavily influenced by Spinoza. (I LOVE Spinoza.) Do you know if that’s so?

As a lifelong conspiracy theorist I was glad to hear you've never seen X Files. Me neither. What's the point? Some watered-down, cliff notes, fictionalized version of a real historical event? Who cares? Or, rather, why does nearly everyone care?

Stephen Chevalier

I’d love to hear your thoughts on basketball and jazz

Great questions, fascinating answers. Enjoying the literary/philosophical stuff, being a crass American pig. A couple thoughts: I’m skeptical about biden going hard on Iran. DoD analysts have to know the US military can’t sustain a war there, it would drain us and Iran would likely disrupt oil traffic in a big way (Iran is tougher than all our current war fronts combined). On jfk, I think full admission/declassification can’t happen because it’s part of a larger milieu that connects too many taboo aspects of reality that are still going strong. Like Iran contra, a full accounting can’t ever be allowed as it would reveal biz as usual. Looking forward to whatever you come up with next.

What podcast were you referring to when you mentioned a known pod possibly doing a katrina series before you?
