This might be irrelevant to you now but... nicotine can act like a stimulant and also as a relaxant depending on how you take it in. If you take short quick puffs, it acts as a stimulant. If you take long slow drags it acts as a relaxant. Typically, smokers automatically/subconsciously change how they smoke depending on whether they feel the need to be more alert or more relaxed. Perhaps your other mental quirks are causing you to smoke as if you need to be more alert even when you're supposed to be relaxing. But yeah it could be something specific to the brand. They put so many chemicals in them and, for some strange reason, the government doesn't make them disclose what those chemicals are. Weird hey!

Thank you for speaking the truth about Lars. I've been a metalhead my entire life and pretty much any time i talk shit about Lars, i get nothing but grief from everyone around me. Dude sucks and has always sucked. If you're interested, check out the video where Dave Lombardo fills in for Lars during a live performance of Battery. It sounds fucking unbelievable. It's how that band should sound. They could have been so much more if they had a better drummer.

John Barrett

Thank you for freeing me of the cursed thought I’ve been living with for years with this intro.

Katherine

My favorite Brady sibling!!

Any interest in doing something on Shining Path and the Fujimorists?

Part Time Stoic

I just realized lately what an exceptional tone Steve Cropper got on the Green Onions LP. So clear and sparkly but with some gristle and bite. Have you ever played through an old Harvard? I know that was a big part of his sound.

I’d love to hear any thoughts you might have on the Fall and MES some time

Is there an answer that isn’t too tedious for you about true-bypass vs. buffered switches in pedals? I hear that the “real” answer is that, if you have a long chain, you generally want true-bypass, but that can come with its own noise which are regulated if you have a buffered pedal at the beginning and end of the chain.

Everett Woolsey

Big 100gecs head, just yesterday was trying to get my friends into them.

Pro-Co cable with Neutrik ends. I make my own because I don't trust companies to solder, lol. Surprisingly even the Parts Express house brand, Dayton Audio, also makes great cable. I could make ya one.

Hey thx for the episode Michael hope you have a great day- any deep thoughts on photography btw? Edit: remembering now the one episode where you say photographers and writers are the categories of artists most likely to go mad because of their constant interaction with their mediums. Those interactions chiefly being the sense of sight and being literate (lol)

uya

long time Dylan and Laura Stan from like 2014. 100 gecs was 100% meant to be the way you described but some things take a life of their own. It was actually really frustrating for me as a fan at first to see their artistic merit judged off that album but They’re happy to have a platform and a future that they both 100% deserve so who can really complain

I find the writing advice helpful for writing music too

The likeliest explanation for the Lucky Strikes issue is nicotine concentration. Either the brand is higher on average than your usual brands, or the batch was higher. I’ve had issues with this in the past. Isn’t it lovely that “not a real drug” products (cigs, coffee, caffeinated sodas) don’t have to include dosage amounts. I suspect intentional variation in dosage within packs and across batches is introduced to gradually acclimatize us smokers to higher doses and increase our dependency threshhold. A seesawing effect between a high dose cig and one that’s just disgustingly unsatisfying and kicks off intrusive thoughts about heading to the corner store for the next pack.

Re: Franklin Credit, I strongly recommend to you and your audience The Franklin Scandal by Nick Bryant. It’s fascinating and terrifying. He was shot at on the highway and actively interfered with by police when he was doing interviews for the book years after the events took place. High quality, journalistic research, assembled in a very readable way. Larry King, former head of the credit union and one of the big bosses in the abuse network is still alive and lives in… you guessed it! Northern Virginia.

Trying to quit smoking too and it sucks b/c over the years i acquired the habit of smoking when i write. It’s not the only trigger but it’s the strongest. So...i have a couple of essays i haven’t written b/c i know I’ll “over-smoke” thru the whole process (editing is even worse than writing as a smoke-trigger). Best thing I’ve found is one of those tiny (JustFog, minifit) salt vapes. I smoke american spirits which are super high nic. So...just want the drug, man.

Jacob Kotler

i’e loved your breakdown of audio technology and the cultural industry - any suggestions for further reading on the subject ?

Jimothy Realname

It makes sense that Lucky Strikes would have something funny in 'em. They're the classic GI smoke. AEF marching sticks. Pull one out of your C ration pack, suck it down, and you can fight your way inland on 4 hours sleep a night

Brook Hines

I like the cut of your doc’s jib. I loooooooove smoking. I love smoking and drinking coffee...smoking and talking. Smoking and thinking. Back in HS the parents in our town used to encourage kids to hang out at their houses and drink (instead of driving up in the mountains as one does). I never really cared about drinking but i loved having the freedom to sit outside with friends, shoot the shit, and smoke. That’s when life is good.

Have you read crypto cuttlefish's thread on "The Franklin Coverup" by John DeCamp? It's kind of fractured, and more about DeCamp himself (and his former boss at the CIA, William Colby) than it is about Franklin, but I think it's pretty interesting He posts a section from the book in which Colby tells DeCamp about his nighttime "victory march" around Red Square when the Soviet Union collapsed / was collapsing. Elsewhere (scattered across a couple of threads) he ties it into James Angleton's obsession with a highly-placed CIA mole and his conflicts with Colby, moving from a clipping describing Yeltsin's "conversion" to capitalism in a grocery store in 1989 while on an visit to the US to the idea that over many years Colby might have secretly tried to work with some pro-capitalist faction within the USSR (without the knowledge of the rest of the CIA, certainly not with Helms, Casey, Bush, the rest of the lads). Related, DeCamp said he didn't believe the official story of Colby drowning in 1996. There's more to the argument / thought, but it's not going to fit here. Also mentions that DeCamp himself initiated "Operation Baby Lift" at the end of the Vietnam War, trafficking a few thousand Vietnamese infants and children to the USA and Europe (but really who can say, maybe some CIA agents really do care about the welfare of children)

Preach! Tobacco built whole civilizations and you’ll learn things smoking outside that no one else knows. And it’s a plus to have death by your side as far as I’m concerned. That’s why my mother smoked btw (Larks, with the charcoal filter). I inherited my father’s mental health and her tobacco addiction. She was a f’n genius and a beautiful writer. He was a banjo player (how mental does one have to be to run off with the banjo player?).

elle

welp now i’ve got comfortably numb rattling around in my head so ty very much for that

Mark Waclawiak

What do you think of Under the Volcano?

Cole Brossus

To the person who is looking to sound like Knopfler or have a more airy, high frequency tone: try lighter gauge strings, if you play 10s try 9s, as one way to get “more highs” is to take away lows. I play with 11s, im a bass player principally and I’m more of a jazz and rock player on guitar so I like that low end. But I have played with many guitarists who swear by 9s, a lot studio guys like them because it helps cut through a mix a little easier. Just thought I’d throw my hat in the tone ring, love the show MSJ and I could listen to you speak about guitar for any amount of bonus episodes, sometimes it’s nice to take a break from deep politics and hear about something I actually can wrap my head around!

Danielle

Listening to the 11-minute live version of “Sultans of Swing” as my weekly penance.

Carine

Rooting for you, MSJ. Big fan of your podcast and your mind

Calum Barnes

Cheers for the answer - certainly don’t think reality can be ‘restored’ either (hence my hedged ‘supposed’) and agree that everyone losing their minds about the breakdown of consensus reality etc. created the very conditions their now upset about. Really appreciated the Levinasian rumination on literature.

Chabby

Enjoyed the take on Ellroy, I am still curious about what you think of his version of events in American Tabloid?

Unknown Caller

Would love for you to do an episode on House of Leaves.

Adam Karkowski

I wonder what you think of Post Modern Jukebox? Their entire schtick - apart from playing new(ish) songs in an older style - is recording with all instruments and singers in one room in a single take.

Sam

Hell yeah brother Some Kind of Monster is incredible

Gabe

This man is brilliant

Lukas McCutcheon

There is a through-line to why I am so fond of your show and why I am very fond of how you said you “could go on forever” and then gave me the response you did. I actually LOL’d. Thank you. Also, yeah I like painful top end sometimes like when I want to rip off A Place to Bury Strangers, and yes I have a Voodoo Labs jawn, and yes modulation before distortion is super under-appreciated.

Lukas McCutcheon

Also Some Kind of Monster is true art and it is a mix of like farcical genius if you watch the deleted scene of Kirk’s birthday and Lars has a breakdown and is like “no ever does anything for me.” It’s incredible. It’s more incredible than Kirk on a horse on acres and acres of some of the most expensive land in one of the most expensive states in the county, and talking about how he goes out there to feel grounded. Fuck I love that movie.
