We lived in a mockup of a past that never happened and are forced to note its "recursions" and "correspondences"; the killers, the owners, the architects live in an ongoing present of violence that will never become merely "the past."

another thing, perhaps smaller than the dulles separate peace and certainly more recent, is the supreme court legitimizing nestle’s slave operations. like, to me, that is all of american history and trajectory summed up in a single moment/decision. 4th reich is going strong. idk maybe I’m missing something but I think that’s the sorta shit you’re getting at

Lying in bed with the worst cold I've ever had, this makes it a little better, thanks MJ

Leguminous Goth

Planning to enjoy this during my hangover tomorrow Thanks Mr. J :^)

The tower in the light requires an equally long shadow. Ever since I heard the death of the sun episode I remember you said you were unsure what was up there instead. When I was a kid I would stare at the sun until the over-reacted receptors would form a shadow with a shine over it to protect my poor retinas. It is both an infinite echo of the Nuclear truth brought to mother Gaia, but also the eye of a camera.

always keen for the concept of a "weird one" but you've outdone yourself here this is an excellent piece, man. one of your best when I saw "dreamtime" in the title I wondered if it was a coincidence or if you were actually going to go there. the various indigenous people down here have a fascinating belief system and its great to see it getting some serious thought and interest abroad

John Waaben

Great concise ep- looking forward to hearing about dark Dreamtime!

Unknown Caller

I wrote a book called House of Queefs. It's about a vagina that's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Only critique I have is on Mad Men. I think the whole overarching point the show is making is about the violence and manevolent evil that was underlying and pushing the “American Dream” forward. “Don Draper” as we came to know him was a fictitious person created from the mind of “Dick Whitman” as he creates the Madison Ave marketing that would define our memory’s of that era. The show ends in an Escalen type New Age commune as Draper comes to peace with “the thing” that he has become. Between those points is just a stream of violence and horror. Could be worth a viewing.

Didn't do the zizek voice??

Eric The Bed Humper.

Everyone always leaves out walter Reuters murder by the CIA.

Happy Days, but instead of Fonzie Jumping the Shark, we were buried alive in sand.

Dude. You owned that episode! Amazing. Gave me language to describe what it is like living cia pilled to normal people.

Big fan of the perfect tenses. They really open up a world of possibilities

Louie Van Patten

The weird ones are the best ones. Thanks for making, MSJ.

Dan Leyendecker

Loved it. And, thanks for happening to also give us a unifying lens for Twin Peaks (especially The Return/Ep. 8!) (not sarcastic)

America's evil dreamtime is so fascinating. Something to really think about. Great episode :)

I gotta say, having watched Mad Men three times from start to finish, I really don’t think it idealizes the times it depicts at all. You could make an argument that it does that aesthetically but that’s it imo

Jack Nancy

oh man, thank you for this MSJ. Been thinking about this stuff a lot. I have such a deep seeded fear of social media. in many ways of course because of the voluntary surveillance, but also just because I think it has us trapped in a false reality. I know people say "we all need to log off," and I understand that there are many reasons to stay "logged on," but I unironically think that if we don't stop creating caricatures of ourselves that exist in a non-material world, we are doomed. Love you, buddy.

Have you watched the film Nicolas Roeg “walkabout.”. The only person who could capture the real Australia. Then watch “Wake in Fright” by Ted Kotcheff a Canadian director another director who captured Australia. I reckon you will know Nicolas Roeg well seeming you have great respect for Bowie. Loved your break down on Station to Station. By the way “Black Star” totally blew me away then Bowie passed. That broke into my consciousness. Your explanation on Dreamtime was very good also.

JD

Mad Men isn’t glamorization of the 60s it’s just as ambivalent and deconstructing as you are. Watch that shit

nicola

Did you mean to paraphrase George Harrison at 6:33 or was that just a coincidence?

Luke ploughman

I think that’s for recent’s growth of Superhero culture is it good indicator our 50s infatuation. Considering it’s around this time Radio and Film serials about these characters grow in popularity.

Michael - there is an Australian film that I think engages a lot of the themes you always return to. “Samson and Delilah” (2009). It is about two teenagers from a remote Aboriginal community in the Central Desert. It’s primarily in Warlpiri with English subtitles - it’s a very beautiful language. It’s a deeply distressing film though, so don’t watch it at a low point. If you’re interested in learning more about Aboriginal cultures, drop me a line. I’m no expert either, but I could clarify a few things about song lines / Dreamings and how they interact with skins / kinship systems. Or I could get you in touch with this fucking fascinating anthropologist / linguist I know if you want a deep dive and somebody to bounce perspectives off.
