New listener here. Was listening to an episode where you tore Andy Warhol a new asshole for being a moronic hack and I gotta tell you, I felt heard.

Robert Maynard

you sounded a little better than last time, for what that's worth - great thoughts, almost upbeat

PN

folks...hes back

as a once (ugh) ‘creative’ person managing the hell of pain, pills, & the betrayal of neuropathic processes, i really appreciated your elaboration on fractured selves, specific nobodies, & medium. some lapsed but earnest prayers for you. it’s lonely and awful.

Good fuggin episode, Judge. Much love

Are we all capable of acts of mediumship and oracularity? And does it help all of us to transcend briefly the commodified plane? Or is this a phenomenon solely for people who gain gravity in online media? I need to listen again. This episode struck like lightning, but I think I'm too dumb to get it in one listen.

Baily McDaniel

You have this way of elucidating & describing certain phenomena I've always known but never heard outside of my"selves". To hear you describe things like the Pain or the Recorder makes me feel a little less crazy & a bit more real. Thanks for sharing some of yourselves with ours🙏

Those last two minutes hit me like a freight train, beautiful words MJ ❤️‍🔥

Baily McDaniel

Oof. I really feel that. I've come to find, that of all the ways our modern alienation manifests, not having any kind of regular dialogue is the hardest for me. I recently had a great conversation with an old friend & just thinking about it is making me a bit verklempt 🥺Listening to you reminds me of the kind of good talk with an old friend we're all probably missing a lot right now. Not to be the quintessential Parasocial Fan™ but I do feel a bit of kinship with you. Your current/ongoing health situation mirrors so much of what I've been dealing with. Hearing from someone who "gets it" is pretty fucking valuable to me.

I have always been loathe to have a "big" social media presence, partly out of fear of becoming in servitude the cultivation of my commodified self. I was also born after 9/11 and have been/am coming of age in this social media era, and it often seems like it's best to just embrace that "commodified self" in some ways. I have a close friend who is very active on instagram and I see it shape how he conducts himself, but I believe it is a positive thing for him that makes his hobbies more enjoyable and soothes the pain of The Recorder somewhat. I also feel like this has contributed to me never really seeing him as he is and it makes me sad. But I don't experience this dialectic between social media content and action as a crushingly negative thing, at least more so than the crushingly negative nature of the world writ large. It helps my buddy stay saner, I think, and I honestly feel like doing something similar might help me as well, can't really avoid the toxic informatic muck when it's goddamn everywhere.

tinkydinkydaffy

that true anon episode really hit a bunch of us. and i totally resonate with your thoughts on reason and hegel, that shit is so crushing. saying this as a lifelong artist.

Renee Leath

Fuck, man. Can I just say that I appreciate how you cover this topics and don't try for anything as trite as a call to action or an attempt to fix it? Sometimes the "usefulness" lies in pointing something out and letting it float around in the world, for better or worse. This idea of commodification that you and true anon are expanding on is horrifying, because in my mind, whatever can be commodified is subject to gatekeeping by the monetizing entities and that...yeah, I don't know where to go with that. Keep hanging in there.

Ever read Blindsight (Peter Watts)? I know you said you don't have much patience for current fiction, and I don't know whether genre fiction does it for you. BUT it focuses on what "the self" is FOR, or if it's even FOR anything. (apologies if you get this one pretty often)

Byron’s Glowing Filament

Hey Michael. This is one of my favorite episodes so far. Really great discussion of literature. Would you qualify Gass’ The Tunnel as navel gazing? I can see both sides to the argument but I’m curious what your opinion on that novel is.

Brendan Garcia

“Modern poetry is … huaghfhh” lol

Jack Lawrence

The whole topic of "selves" reminds me of what Schreber called his fleetingly-improvised men: manifestations provided to him by the nervous system of God to interact with in the absence of real physical people. It seems we're closer to trading in the embodiments of a deranged God/Nature than we'd like to think.

Genelec monitors suck. like ringing a room out at 1k for a few hours.

this is perfection - " If you're writing poetry and it's fundamentally on the page not distinguishable from court testimony, you're probably not a poet. Ya know. All respect, that's not an art form". MSJ
