Nostalgia is a weapon, it aims to kill, and despite what you may have heard, it isn't yours to wield.

Hope you’re feeling better

Twisted Reality

I appreciate the fuck out of these episodes man. As someone going through some physical ailments that don’t look promising, being able to relate to someone makes me feel a little warmer. Thanks a lot.

Lucas

gotta get NOSTALGIA IS A WEAPON on the death corner merch

Not yet through the whole of the episode but just wanted to say the way you're leading into the definition of nostos reminds me of "the road back" of the hero's journey. Had some consultants lib-splain Joseph Campbell's hero journey to me today so maybe im just fixated on the metaphor

I was just reading a book called “The World of Odysseus” earlier that talks about what the home or “Oikos” represented in Bronze Age Greece and the strange obligations of its members to keep it safe. Hits a lot of the same notes as this episode.

Lukas McCutcheon

Heavy emphasis on ‘an hemorrhage was appreciated. As was your ridiculous sounding German accent (which I realize is because of the nightmare in your mouth so I’m only be a little inconsiderate towards your physical ailments of late.)

Wildly Absurd

Your discussion of the thorny circle of Nostos made me think of an ouroboros - the snake’s mouth facing left, devouring its own tail. a wanderer returning home to a different, more painful world. good stuff. ¡salud, hermano!

Miles Byrne

As far as GR being mostly Pirate’s fantasy vs “actually happening”— both of these things should be presumed to be true. Hemaphroditically circle AND line, stimulus AND response, real AND fantasy. Because in GR it’s always both.

Yesss more etymology/philology/linguistics. Tied into literary and cultural relevance wonderfully as always. Anyways I was deeply depressed tonight and lying awake at 1am currently but feeling a lot better after listening. Thank u Michael

Fucking brilliant. Love how you brought this longish, seemingly (but not actually) meandering excursus on word origins, with a further seeming detour through Ulysses and Gravity's Rainbow, together and around so as to slam it into the present moment, with a reprise and concise summation of your "political gnosticism" thesis. That previous episode, featuring an uncharacteristically dumbstruck Matt Christman, was my entrée into your work, and I gotta say when you opened there with that dense articulation of the thesis, I immediately straightened my posture and dropped whatever it was I was doing in the realization that damn I really need to pay close attention to this. That effort has been rewarded over and over and once again. Many thanks.

Mom new DC ep dropped

Nostalgia is bad? Dang, just as my buddy Holly themed band, the 'Joly Hollys, where were all buddy hollys, is scheduled to play at the hard Rock café tonight!

WokeChickTractFan

I think the guy who first used Nostalgia was Swiss talking about fucked up Swiss mercenaries. Calling a Swiss guy german is acceptable though because they're assholes and it pisses them off.

Byron’s Glowing Filament

I almost wonder if this is in reference to PTA’s new movie. Curious about your thoughts on it.

Andrew Langford

have you seen the tarkovsky film nostalghia? its maybe not his best but i really love it... i think it presents a compelling picture of 'nostos' that's similar to what you're getting at here

Man shout out for posting the damn mp3s. I'm basically working in a Faraday cage these days and this show has been clutch

this episode was incredible; hit just about every note for me (not least being the etymology geekery, which takes up at least 20% of my time on the internet - and thanks for the etymonline suggestion too). quite a thing how much from your previous work you tied together in this

Robert Maynard

This is great once it gets going - I get repetition for impact and emphasis but the first 7 minutes talking about etymology felt more like you had three takes and kept all of them. I was like "is he doing a bit, he's just telling the story again slightly differently" 😅 Anyway this gon' be a good'un (series)

I haven't the words to properly express how specifically I needed this particular episode. Thank you, sir.

Hey! Your speculation about Slothrop's being a figure in Prentiss' imagination--that's the story in Pynchon's "The Secret Integration" ('64)
