Ive only ever been a sort of casual user of opiates (albeit addicted to kratom) but I got way more fucked up off suboxone than any opiate I’ve ever done.

So the UAW does still exist/is still pretty prominent, but they've been severely, severely weakened by their inability to break into Southern right-to-work states and the internal outsourcing of Great Lakes production to like Georgia and Mississippi. Of particular interest to the topic at hand is the longest-serving president of UAW, Walter Reuther, who came to power by organizing his union into wartime production and then enthusiastically purging the Communists in 1945. He then became a key ally of JFK and LBJ (even helped negotiate the Bay of Pigs prisoner release), a general progressive activist who supported the Civil Rights movement and the nascent environmental movement, and more than anyone spearheaded the absorption of the labor movement into the Democratic Party as just another interest group pleading for favors. For his troubles, he died in an incredibly suspicious plane crash in 1970.

I don't mean to tell you how to do your job but you should hit up the Alfred p Sloan Foundation for some sponsorship for the pod. I freaking love science

Hey Michael, thanks for another mind-expanding ep. Glad to see you’re still on the mend- hoping you’ll be out of the woods soon with junk, forever. I think there was an essay you shared earlier about human society being controlled by petrochemicals and its (the chemicals) conscious need to be extracted and consumed (could be confusing the thesis). I’ve been thinking about that a lot in regards to all the fourth reich eps you’ve done. I don’t have a clear idea yet because I do not understand chemistry but what’s the deal with industrial society relying on crystallized death ? Sorry for a such a broad question

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this last episode. The history of tetra ethyl lead got me thinking about the life of its inventor Thomas Midgley Jr. I suggest having a look at his story if you aren’t familiar. Fascinating. The events of his life and the way he died are the blueprint of the most tragicomic Simpsons episode never made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley_Jr.?wprov=sfti1

Really enjoyed the episode! I'm a casual mechanic, falling deeper down the rabbit hole. I was intrigued by the mention of Ford engines originally being designed to run on ethanol and started looking into it -- turns out that might not be entirely true. There's a couple articles from automotive publications looking into it, this one is pretty concise: https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2017/04/23/fact-check-henry-ford-didnt-design-the-model-t-as-a-multi-fuel-vehicle. Does nothing to dissuade me from wanting to source a Model T engine to build a cheap grocery-getter. Edit: fuck GM, still.

funny to hear opel mentioned. the UKs biggest car manufacturer, vauxhall, to this day uses opel factories to make their cars, and vauxhall car models are sold in europe under the name opel. always confused me as a child seeing them on holidays in france

Hi Michael, excellent episode as usual. The mention of Albert Speer brought to mind something I learned recently as a fan of soccer, that perhaps you already know but if not I would like to share with you. The main architect for the stadium for the World Cup in Qatar this year, which were built with slave labor by south East Asian workers (thousands dead) were designed by none other than…… would you believe it, Albert Speer Jr. https://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/german-architect-albert-speer-plans-for-the-2022-world-cup-in-qatar-a-836154.html

Just finished reading "The Princess Spy" in which there's a direct connection with Disney and the OSS.

Fantastic stuff, as usual, Michael. I am sorry to hear that your recovery from opiate addiction is still causing you discomfort. I wish a speedy convalescence. Curious if anyone knows the track name that closes out the episode? Thank you in advance!
