I used to deliver pizzas in a college town in new england. Made me realize pretty much every road and dorm are named after a truly despicable motherfucker and you see those names everywhere

The Han Chinese are the vast majority of the population of China but there are many dialect groups including Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew etc. The Hakka are also ethnic Han who migrated into Southern China later than the other groups and too late to get significant land holdings. Did this reason the Hakka are referred to a "guest" people or even the "gypsies" of China. Because of their landless status they lived precariously and were rebellious. Canton is the western name of a city in the south nearest Hong Kong which is also known as Guangzhou.

And the Opium Wars leading to Mao; I did not see the link to liberal interventionism, gorgeously horrific observation.

Sandy

Wow, weird we never learned this history stuff in school, huh.

Jonathan Schultz

Loved the Tom Waits impression. Just as you have mentioned the importance of the Rathenau seance in Gravity's Rainbow, I similarly think the Wimpe/Tchicherine conversation about the pharmaceutical management of pain is a point of high intensity in the narrative. Brilliant episode!

Sean

Top tier ep as always MSJ

Eric The Bed Humper.

What you talk about opioids is exactly how I felt getting hooked on adderall or concerta.

Sandy

Listening to Recluse's Cincinnati series, I'm seeing a whole lot of the sane names cropping up

William B. Bricks

i dozed off listening to this one (not a critique, just had a long day) and woke up during Empire State of Mind outro and haven't felt as lost, hopeless, and depersonalized as that in a while.

My favorite part of the American opium trade is Nicholas Biddle having the Bank of the US issue India Bills of Exchange. Traders could bring this paper instead of silver for the opium trade, opening cargo holds for cotton. And when they bought opium in India, the sellers could redeem the bills for silver from British banks. Using the old sovereign's specie to back your drug trade, and partly causing two panics in the process, is what true ballers do.

I sent you a message but this really helped me understand family trauma in a profound way I couldn’t without you. Thank you. 🫡
