Some preliminary events and occurrences, as I attempt to staple my brain back together in real time, including the exciting collaboration between Albert Speer's son & Qatari startup Slavery 2. Plus: what does Roberto Bolaño have to do with it.

I think I messaged you awhile back about Bolaño. I'd love to talk to you if you want to continue this series

Graham

Did that guys’s dissertation about GR and 2666 ever come out? If so, I would love to read it.

Connor Moloney

Welcome back man! Hope you're feeling better 💪

Mike Bilbe-Taylor

Fuck me, Qatar and Bolano on the menu? Serve me up.

Louie Van Patten

Those keywords have me excited this one. MSJ, did you like Crimes of the Future?

Justin Reid

Back into The Zone we go.

aaron sewards

This was incredible, I’ll listen to it five more times or more, thank you so much Michael

Jack Patterson

What a great episode! I’m working the night shift at a liquor store in Adelaide (meth capital of Australia) and did not expect an episode length answer to my Bolaño question to drop! I think your idea of the narrator revealing themselves to be insane is an essential way to understand 2666. For me the most striking quality of Bolaño is the creeping feeling of terror that you can’t quite name in passages that you could otherwise read as comedic. I’m thinking especially in savage detectives when I think Quim Font answers the phone pretending to be his daughter, I have no idea why but that scared the shit out me. Thanks so much for the episode Michael!

AJ McKenna

You might not be sure about it but within seconds of this episode starting I could tell you're getting back to pre-withdrawal form. And I think you're absolutely on the money about why September 11th 2001 was so shocking to so many (including me at the time but I was in my early 20s). Everyone talks about its similarity to Independence Day but nobody mentions there was another form of screened content we had grown used to in which we saw people lamenting as they tried to dig people out of rubble, and it was news footage of war zones, usually in the global South. That was supposed to be something we were insulated from thanks to Stormin' Norman and McDonald's, and a lot of us went a little crazy from that brief intrusion of reality.

Deborah Schwartz

Omg your Trump impersonation is hilarious, spot on!! 🤣🤣🤣

I genuinely had to park the car at the SG bit.

Man's just going for it

spouter

dear perfection that was precisely my experience of reading 2666. i was immobilized, living in New York but stuck spychically in North Mexico.

Podconsoomer

You hit a rich vein with this one mane. Now I absolutely have to read Bolaño

CJ

My fucking man. I just recently subscribed and you still knock it out of the park even in the midst of withdrawal, it’s super impressive.

I really don't comment on patreon but I had to tell you, this was probably one of your best episodes yet. It really resonated with me because lately I've been doing a lot of reading to understand how Marx's concept of primitive accumulation actually happened in material terms. Oh, btw you'll soon have two songs inspired by your work on Death Corner. I've been writing the lyrics to one of the songs my band is recording that incidentally covered a lot of the same topics you talked about this episode

Jonathan Franzen

Really great episode for lots of reasons but I always appreciate Bolaño talk.

Shiv

these lovely, lovely s***** girls, they’re all over the place 😀

M Wigby

all time banger

Ricardo

Nice! I read Drug Cartels Do Not Exist recently and the author mentions 2666 often.

YourBabysFather

I know this is corny but I tweeted that picture in response to your Albert Speer Jr. Qatar tweet and to see it as the thumbnail of my favorite podcast is so fucking cool. Am I a reply guy? Who cares. Love ya brother

Lojban Percocet

My greatest memory of reading 2666 is that there was just an underlying feeling of darkness and cruelty even under the most mundane moments right from the beginning. Just reading about the day to day lives of the academics and their interests at the beginning gave me chills without even knowing what direction the novel would take, but it's still hard to put my finger on why that is

Jim Salow

You sound great man, thank you for all you do!

CT

You’re my new favorite trump impersonator

JP

Which two Bolaño books would you recommend for some who hasn’t read any of his novels?

Gabriel Mathews

Hey random q but what's your opening theme music?

Josh Cohen

Another unbelievable episode, keep on taking your time these are well worth it. Just finish delillo's Mao ii can't help but feel like he was touching on the same subject of terror being brought to the west as a mechanism to assert the reality of these other concurrent worlds.

The Cheerful Comrade

Wow, thinking of Suicide Girls, a friend of mine from high school became a very famous SG and made a ton of money and parlayed that into I guess big Instagram?

Pine

Absolutely brilliant. Thank you MSJ. You just keep moving from strength to strength 💪🏽

brantley

Hey what is the song at the end of this episode?

Henry Mink

Have you read any of Wallace Shawn's plays? I was thinking of them when you brought up the fact of our world being built on top of countless people "living through right now what you cannot imagine as human life." Most of his work is ultimately about exactly that, with varying degrees of directness and filtered through the particular derangements that come with a bourgeoisie lib upbringing. I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on The Fever and, especially, The Designated Mourner and Aunt Dan & Lemon.
