In case anyone is curious about McLuhan's "the medium is the message," here's an audio musical production of the essay that mcluhan made: https://youtu.be/6SU6Ef30o4E

“Somehow, in some way, the world in the book is *right*, and *this* world is *wrong*.” I’m not remotely kidding when I say that that’s what happens to me when I watch RUGGLES OF RED GAP, a fantasy film where America is good, and, on a lesser but by no means unimportant way, the Bellknap-Jacksons of the world can be, have been, and will be defeated.

Some of the companies who had loans from SVB had loan covenants requiring them to park their cash at SVB. Not an excuse for the bank not being able to hedge properly, but that’s why some companies didn’t have money spread across other banks and why FDIC levels was the problem. Also, startups got better terms for financing at SVB than other lenders. That’s why they had so much Startup money.

Ok so I’m only part way through the episode and I’m at work, but, when I was reading the Crying of Lot 49 probably 10 years ago for the first time, I saw the Trystero symbol in at least 3 places: drawn on the back of a toll booth basket, carved into a brick wall, and tattooed on the back of a girl’s neck at a house show. I feel like there was another one that I can’t remember but, either way, the point: I haven’t seen it anywhere since I stopped reading that book and I have been looking. I probably have thought about it once a week to once a day at least since. I bought a t-shirt with the symbol on it so that maybe someday some random person will run up to me, grab me by the shoulders and tell me the story I’m telling you now. I’d read the book again to see if it happens again but my reading list is too long. Side note: I had always been intimidated by Gravity’s Rainbow but I’m about 1/4 through it now thanks to this show. Anyway, keep up the good work, Pynchon is a shaman, etc. and so forth.

England was attacked in WW1, the Germans dropped a lot of bombs on them from early airplanes and Zeppelins.

MSJ, I keep forgetting to ask, have you seen Craig Baldwin's TRIBULATION 99: ALIEN ANOMALIES UNDER AMERICA? You might dig it. It's a collage film (Baldwin's specialty) from 1992 that's only superficially a satire of conspiracy narratives, but it's so fast-paced and dense - not to mention deliberately incoherent - that it isn't possible to take it as mocking or condescending. Baldwin's a fairly respectable figure in the a-g/experimental cinema cohort - were it not for the membrane that tends to prevent movies from that scene to trickle onto the main cultural boulevard, TRIB might have found purchase among QAnon heads; but I also suspect it would so uncannily match their swamp of fragmented notions that the encounter would be like when Harpo and Groucho do the mirror scene in DUCK SOUP.

I hope every episode from now on starts with a passage from GR. That book is indeed the whole world.

While listening to the segment on artistic creation I was reminded of psychologist Karl’s Groos's idea of “the pleasure at being the cause.” Simply put, we take pleasure in exercising our powers of execution for their own sake, the way a child does. Applied to artistic expression, there is intrinsic pleasure found in the creation of art. It’s a form of play, of autonomy. You argue that consuming art and creating art cannot be separated. And while that’s true in the sense that an artist desires an audience, the two are not equal—they are symbiotic. If no choices are made, if one is simply following in the tracks of another’s choices, then nothing new is produced only absorbed. Both have value, but they are distinct processes. To be fully engrossed in a book or movie or piece of music is wonderful and might be the first step towards artistic expression, but it doesn’t cross the threshold. Perhaps a key indicator is vulnerability. To create something is to put yourself out there, to be vulnerable. Until that happens, you remain a spectator.

Just turned 24 today and I’m so happy to know that I not only got to grow up and lose my childhood home in the 2008 crisis (step dad was addicted to percs and took out a double mortgage) but now I get to live through a second crisis guaranteeing I will NEVER own a home!

Fucking phenomenal show, Michael.

I don’t think I’ve ever had the 2008 financial crisis explained in such a clear and concise way, that was amazing.
