"Institutional decay" is a euphemism for "design of future refugees from the fictionalized past." You'll enjoy the dovetail at the end. Oh, sure, yeah, the end of the episode too.

(Sorry if I sound pretty fucked up on this one. Tweren't my fault, guv, I swear as it weren't.)

After I finish catching up on Niger over at Radio War Nerd I’m gonna listen to this as a pick me up. Oh nooooooooo

What if you go to crossroads with Ralph macchio and then make a deal with the devil and wind up in a shred contest with Steve Vai?

You know it sucks that they all got so up in arms because I genuinely enjoy Programmed to Chill. Jimmy does really solid and deep research into parapolitics and it’s cross section with esotericism. Subliminal Jihad is decent too!

Haven't listened to this one yet I've been saving them up, but God damn part 3 is a masterpiece, you stated ideas I've repeatedly tried to drunkenly blabber about to friends at 4am many times in a way that actually makes them understandable and coherent, which I think I always failed to do. This is why we stay with you through the still valuable if less coherent times, it's not about pity or parasocial shit, it's about these straight class A banger episodes. Keep up this good shit brother

Hey Michael, thought I would offer some support because it sounds like you are struggling. Your analysis and commentary on culture and history has truly helped me to make sense of this messy awful beautiful modern world. I love hearing you talk and you’ve always got such meaningful and impactful things to say. Please hang in there.

This one feels especially dark since you're talking about experiences that are so mundane and immediate to you. Btw what was the name of the comedy where the guy day drinks?

Jaime Christley

Ironically, given how often Richard E. Grant plays problem drinkers (to put it mildly), he’s extremely allergic to alcohol and is a lifelong teetotaler as a result.

the way you tied up the start of the show with the end was amazing. I wasn’t quite sure where the middle was going as I don’t have that much personal experience with the subject but goddamn. What a great episode. Edit, the Chapo cia bit and not the drug discussion starting the episode.

MSJ here's a cursed series of words for you. I was skimming the first page or so of Finnegans Wake so I could make a "mastabatoon" joke about Mastadon on BlueSky (yeah I'm not getting into heaven) but I couldn't remember the spelling so I googled it and let's just say that's not a good idea

Gummies are good, my friend, but if you need alcohol perhaps just beer? Support you regardless.

A lot of the eikonosphere talk here makes me think of Trow's Within the Context of No Context, did you ever read that one?

Eric The Bed Humper.

It's crazy how I thought I was a fucked up from day 1 because I was regulated into special ed and kinda was discarded from the rest of my classmates because I couldn't get things right away.

Damn, this episode. Recent listener but I think you sound extremely coherent if only sometimes hard to follow because the topic is complex yet not. Personally it resonated with me because I grew up materially well off (not rich, but comfortable and never financially insecure) but had a dad that prioritized his work (hence, materially well off) and a mom with serious past emotional/physical abuse issues that turned to heavy drinking almost every night and constantly pulling me into drunken conversations about said abuse and her overall loneliness and despair. Growing up in that home, it felt like we were all atomized from each other in our own struggle, trying desperately to find our way through it. For me it was initially school and sports that I invested myself fully into- but after a time I compounded too much of that onto myself and became incredibly stressed out. I turned to online video games as a way to escape both the stress of all that I had taken on as well as my mom's drinking and my dad being absent largely from our home. This completely fucked up my life during a critical time in school. While other kids were thinking about college, I was skipping class and doing everything I could to avoid school as well as my home life. Because people didn't know fuck all about addiction, let alone online gaming and how sordidly rigged that is towards getting children and young teens hooked on the skinner's box of dopamine regulation- I was largely blamed for my own failure to control my own habits. I just remember feeling like such a personal level of self-failure at that time and the sheer disappointment of my former friends, peers, and family really pushed me further away from it all and it was absolutely isolating. It's not that I don't own my part in it; quite the opposite. I was the only one that did own my part in it and it was just not talked about after I stopped gaming and went back to school. Listening to this was like a breath of fresh air. We live in a world of absolute monsters and we either escape the danger of being eaten whole by becoming monsters ourselves, or we just simply fall off the treadmill and become the fuck up. I'm trying now, many many years later, to get my life on track towards something emotionally and mentally sustainable but it has been a long time of being incredibly hard on myself for feeling like, well, a fuck up. Thanks Michael as always for your keen insight and perspective on talking about this. Sending all my support your way and I look forward to listening to more of your episodes.

Heavily reminded me of Ch.11, “Of Suicide” in Natasha Lennard’s book ‘Being Numerous’ - struggling to put why into my own words, so here are a few passages to hopefully get at that: • ‘Like any regime of truth, suicide-as-pathology posits a particular world of subjects, objects and relations in order to make sense of suicide. Above all, it assumes that sense can be made. ‘But the pathologized suicidal subject is ontologically weird. “She killed herself”—the sentence’s subject and object are the same individual. It is no stranger than any other instance of apparent subject/object collapse…’ • ‘Grasping for understanding, we run the risk of ascribing complete and reasonable deliberation (such as in Maynard’s case), or a psychopathology in which any sort of intention is impossible. Suicide becomes the purview of either the mad or the meaningful, and nothing in between.’ It’s also got relevant (& fun!) chapters titled ‘Looking at Corpses’ & ‘Ghost Stories’

Hey, I just noticed (or thought) that there’s a paradox here: the same people who is looking to break into the iconosphere (e.g. the one who accused Chapo et. al. of being CIA) can act as a enforcer of the iconosphere (e.g. the psychiatrist whose eyes shine when they see a “special case”). Idk, just thought abt that. P.d. Send you love

Listening to this one in January 2026-- Although I am sadly a psychiatrist myself, I completely agree with your assessment of "syndromes" and also the crazy narcissism of some doctors who seem to want to name syndromes after themselves. I was "educated" at Columbia by Spitzer, who revised and helped created DSM-3 and DSM-4, moving "beyond" psychodynamic framework. Suffice it to say that categorical thinking is not something that I appreciated then or now! I wrote about this in a book chapter for a book edited by Kevin Mitchell that hardly anyone bought or read, so I put up the chapter as a preprint here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/000687v4 Anyway, really loving all of these episodes! I hope other people subscribe and listen much more to these amazing shows.
