Hell yeah, afternoon on my day off listening to King Mike riff on the greatest book of all time

Philip Wailes

Hell yes, five hour drive through PA/NY today and I just read this section last night (first GR re-read after finishing it in August!) Divine timing. Very excited to listen.

“This Earth is a pussy, just waiting to get fucked” - Tony Montana

John Waaben

The infinity vs totality talk is so brilliant. Thanks Michael, happy new year. “Science as rape” feels embodied by Captain Ahab to me too. Still not smart enough to read GR….. YET

Divad Kong

What about drinking the pure crude black blood of untold trillions of dead fossilized once life and transmuting it into every item of our social reality strikes you as some kind of death cult fever? To me it seems quite quite normal and good and part of a healthy life balance.. . Please pass me the essence to drink deep and do not interfere with the dark crystal magic

Baron

If you had to put a soundtrack behind the Seance scene, what would you do?

Karl Childers

i'm reminded of a quote from Thank You For Smoking, about an ex-Nazi medical researcher working for the tobacco lobby: "he's been studying the link between smoking and lung cancer for 30 years and hasn't discovered anything. the man's a genius."

Jaime Christley

It's absolutely the case that a person can be a science zealot in exactly the same deeply annoying and/or harmful way that any other form of fanaticism can tilt towards; a few years ago there was a dust-up on Twitter over this, and who would step in to read the riot act to legions of annoying "BELIEVE SCIENCE" assholes (again, not anti-anti-vaxxers but people who genuinely believe for ex. that if you dispute "a study", you are in league with flat-Earthers and whatnot)? None other than MC FUCKING HAMMER. https://twitter.com/MCHammer/status/1363908982289559553?lang=en Verily, he was too legit to quit.

Jaime Christley

Andrei Tarkovsky (paraphrasing from memory): if we (mankind) were able to learn from our mistakes, we’d be angels by now.

Enk

I'm 60 seconds in and all I have to say so far is *DOOOOOO IT MIKE FUCK YEAH*

Gianteye

People don't like it when you break their models. Poincaré called the Weierstrass function a monster because it fucked up a bunch of mathematical proofs.

Jaime Christley

MSJ have you read Eisenstein and/or Bazin? It's been ages since I read Film Form/Film Theory (SE) or What is Cinema? (AB) but whenever the subject of synthesis comes up (in the way you discuss it) I think of Eisenstein's writings and whenever ontology comes up, whenever I so much as spot the word, I think of Bazin. also was hoping you would weigh in on BARBENHEIMER. no, I'm not taking the piss, this is 100% in earnest. (imho BARBIE is way better than anything about its concept deserved to be; OPPENHEIMER, I don't really go for Nolan and this is very much a jumped-up early '90s ABC 2-night special television event but I had absolutely no problem persuading my pop - who was skeptical - to see it. it's..... better than THE GOOD SHEPHERD, for what it's worth?)

Joey Fazzoli

Francis bacon’s quote and the underlying intent behind it remind me of judge holden’s speech in blood meridian where he says that the freedom of birds offends him and he’d have them all in zoos if he could

n_p

Wait…this isn’t about Eurorack?

Jack

If you're super nerdy and also truly cannot get past the scientism and mechanistic materialism, there's a book called The Entropy Law and the Economic Process by Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen. It's the closest thing I have read to a rigorous analysis of why there's more to the world than scientism would have you believe. If you don't need that, the book is still great but very very dense.

Jack

Michael I'm wondering where/to whom you look to find wisdom beyond scientism. In my experience there's a lot out there both newish and very ancient. Wisdoms from all parts of the world. Is there one or some you go to?

Jack

I will say I don't think that language "came from nowhere". Many if not most languages are placed based in a way I certainly do not fully understand. But when I've listened to people I care about speak of the importance of learning and preserving their indigenous languages, it doesn't seem to me like they believe those languages are arbitrary human creations. Even the defiled English we speak today still has remnants of place-based and sacred origin

David

Man, there is a David Hume quote where he talks about science as ripping secrets from nature's breast or some such thing. Google is failing me right now, but it was very rapey and precisely the same vein as the Bacon quote. It's driving me nuts that I can't find it.

had typed out a long comment a couple days ago while listening, but by the end you had said most of I was going to offer. BUT HERE I GO. As someone who has been involved in and adjacent to "scientific research" for a good while now, I have to say you're absolutely right about the drive towards quantification, and what a hateful (and underwhelming) form of understanding it tends to support. In the bowels of the science industry, a little less recently it was Big Data that was going to Deliver us from the scourge of human creativity in the interpretation of data, and when it became apparent that well was dry from the beginning, the saviour quickly became AI, which... lol. I'd add that we should understand science as the key productive process in a "knowledge economy," and consider its subjugation to the logic of capital/production in line with that. Adam Smith (to whom economists have the same relationship as your 17y-o nephew who beats off to scenes from Nymphomaniac on the internet has to lars von trier movies) had some frank warnings about what the logic of [capitalist] production would do to the mental and physical lives of the workers who had to do such repetitive and numbingly simple tasks. Maybe it would seem like a paradox that the knowledge economy would produce such absolute dullards as its "knowledge workers", but it is that same rationalization of production applied to science that has established the standard of the scientist as a highly credentialed idiot. Not just Steven Pinker or Malcolm Gladwell, but the many more "top of their field" people with 35 letters behind their name starting their keynote with a quote from Gladwell or Pinker. The advance of quantitative methodologies isnt just an aggressive war on 'human thought' in the abstract sense -- it is also, in the real terms of the personnel operating the apparatus day in day out, a war on humans doing any extra thinking, and a selection process favouring those least likely to get in the way of the machine.

Dan Leyendecker

Michael, just bought tickets for The Zone of Interest and, while a long time listener, I can’t remember you ever discussing Glazer. I believe the premise of TZOI, at least, can’t correlate strongly enough with the “rave next to a concentration camp forever” Idea That’s Not Even An Idea But A Reality - just curious if you have plans to see the movie or what you’ve thought about Glazer’s work in the past.

Sage

Nice. Wrote my undergrad thesis on this stuff. Oddly cozy ep despite the topic.

Thinking of the r*ping of Greta Erdmann by the jackals…

I would love to hear a series on House of Leaves 🚪

anyone interested in the philosophy of science & dissenting voices from the ‘inside’ should read Against Method by Paul Feyerabend, who introduced this idea of epistemological anarchism - ‘there is no such thing as scientific method’. It’s a classic of the subject & great. + anything else by Feyerabend in general. I can’t really get on board with everything MSJ’s saying here but I see what you’re trying to do, as ever it’s all very emotive and miserable and fun to listen to! Unfortunately I’m too in love with it all and science is my ‘special interest’ =)

dimdimKing

Incredible ep, as person deeply in debt to a B.Sci/biotech this summed up the field perfectly. I'm a market gardener now

Justin Reid

Francis Bacon was a fraud - the numbers don’t lie: - 69% pass completion rate - Never passed 30 total touchdowns in a season - Ranked 31st in the league in his BEST year for rushing yards Dawg, Bacon is washed

ggmacd

Great ep, had to listen again. Found myself thinking, if philosophy roughly translated is "love of knowledge," I think we can learn a lot about what the verbiage of "love" entails in our modern context if we consider that prominent names among contemporary "philosophers" spent some quality time on Little Saint James island.

Bored at Work

I don't know how to explain to my white mom that two of her daughters are half Palestinian and I'm half Libyan and we love our dead Marine grandfather but things aren't going great

No

Being surrounded by the laws of god piece, you should listen to communing with the mystics thomas Merton episode 1. James Finley goes off about how essentially Merton talks about if god were to cease loving anything in the universe it would instantly disappear. Feels like the science as trying to view and observe natural order everywhere

James Aydelotte

‘He who sees only the ratio sees himself only.’ -William Blake offering his opinion on materialism. I am reminded in your discussion of Faraday and Maxwell of this quote of Blake. His use of repetition is perhaps indicative of a tautology similar to that Gödel broke philosophy with… a palindrome of the abyss

idiot.wisdom

A thorough critique of human supremacy mythos and its role in creating the eternal pain engine we all live in? In death/corner? It's more likely than you think Hell yeah brother
