I suspect this is less about judgement and more about whether or not Kalgkur's mind snaps from the strain. If he stays sane, he's free to go (although there'll probably be repercussions on the human side of Val Salia). If he goes nuts, presumably the kind of atavistic instinct-driven state that the baxxids seem to fear so much, he's a goner. The one who got chained down for life may have been someone who stayed fully sane AND committed crimes, which is something baxxids can't really compute.

No head decorations, nonreflective black eyes, black cloth. Is this an executioner or a zombie? I don't think the new baxxid has done anything to Kalgkur yet, that's just his reaction to seeing them. I have a really bad feeling about what's in store for our boy if he fails this judgement...

Hm. It has been said that the head shape and detailing is to identify individuals and/or clan affiliation/social standing, but this mysterious figure is completely smoothed out. Is this an erasure of identity, or an identity of its own?
