The converging evolution along some of these rats is just fascinating stuff.

talk show ghost

omg, I want a Leaftailed Trilopoid! I would let him sit on my back all day!

Ngrasta

*Tries to eat too much Syrupbloom at once; gets teeth stuck together.* ;w;

Gregory

Rattergnats vs Yinglets, there can be only one ratbird! Love that they have both the bird tail and the rat tail.

MysteryCryptid

How do you come up with these designs

Trashiest Poss Flint

I enjoy the verse having both very fantastical flora and fauna, and then fauna with the name or normal animals but are very much fantastical too

Andrew Denton

Seems a bit prejudiced against bushrats. I can't imagine how one could have hurt you that it would generate that kind of reaction.

BiasMushroom721

Ok. So the lady at the bottom... i though she was wearing a backpack... then I thought oh she has a tail! New sapient species? Then I saw the pic of the critter in the hole with its tail sticking out...

Shodow

Escaped gene-splicing experiments galore! Very interesting way to showcase what could be interpreted as "biological antiquities". Also, 14 is quite a curious number that makes me think there might've been a few more that quickly went extinct due to not being suited outside of an artificial environment and so escaped later being catalogued.

Kendra Kirai

Wow, Ran, did a bushrat kill your Grandma or something?

ballantruan

Kass should adopt a bushrat, just to mess with Ran

Thorin N. Tatge

O my these amazing things who live in your world. I was going to speculate on Ran having a bad experience with a bushrat. How could he know their thoughts, after all? Not so scientific. I think there's a missing word after "collects" in the syrupbloom entry in the second-to-last paragraph.

It is very difficult to look at some of these plant species and justify doubts that intentional bioengineering has taken place on this planet. These are the kinds of things we would absolutely select for in traditional agriculture, but in the wild most species that aid in seed dispersal don't resemble the way that humanoids eat fruit and vegetables, which is why the sheer convenience of these plants is suspect.

valsalia

This is some good theorycrafting here!

valsalia

Ah crap, thanks for the catch!

valsalia

there's also some kinda lobster attached to it

valsalia

They probably just need to find the rest

valsalia

It *could* just be a deceptively elaborate backpack

valsalia

And sometimes the fauna is also the flora

valsalia

I tape a bunch of random words on a dartboard, close my eyes and throw a handful of darts

valsalia

Sometimes ya gotta have both

valsalia

It's great for pulling out childrens' loose teeth

valsalia

The creature would enjoy that

It's Not Blue

i am always a slut for worldbuilding

Flora P-Stylianides

! you get a tail AND a cute creature pet?! perfect animal

Shyster

Can syrupbloom juice be fermented into alcohol?

Silver the Snep

"It's grass" is wild to me, because it is a thing sometimes found in real world texts. I think it was an old Polish dictionary that said "Horse: You know what a horse is." That however comes with the problem of what happens when this thing isn't as common anymore or is just straight up wiped out? Suddenly all information on this thing is gone, making historians rip their hair out because some dude back then decided that "This is so common sense that I don't need to describe it." That is probably more common with folklore than most other things, tales that were first spread by word of mouth long before being written down and now we're left with "The Creature™" What is the creature? No one knows. What does it look like? Not a clue. All we know is that this thing called "The thworp" liked to scare children and steal pies.

Ran has loved and lost many a bushrat. Why else would he have such strong feelings for them?

valsalia

When he was having a bad day, someone helpfully suggested he go outside and touch grass. He tried, and the grass bit him. Now if someone tells him to touch grass he will punch them

valsalia

lol so many people have made comparisons to that, which is how I myself have become aware of it

valsalia

It makes for a very popular dessert wine!

valsalia

Always remember to use protection when worldbuilding

valsalia

Given enough time and environmental pressure, everything eventually becomes rat

ComicTF

"A grass killed my father"

Dokterkokter69

That's what I'm getting from the creatures of this world too. I subscribe to the theory (not really my own but I agree) that this world is a RimWorld style colony planet that was either cutoff/abandoned hundreds of years ago or accidentally crashed on. It seems the original colonists had some pretty advanced gene editing technology, probably to adapt fauna to new planets. I think the more alien creatures like baxxid and indrel are native to the planet and creatures like yinglets and rats seem to be science let loose.

Fox Starwing

Boy, the Val Salia region sure has a lot of rat-things. Bird-rats, long-rats, grass-rats, bug-rats, stilt-rats. Many rats.
