Back in February, I was looking at some of the new Magic cards in Aetherdrift. I saw Whir of Invention and said, “oh, who did that? Brian Chippendale?" Who is Brian Chippendale?

The Art of Making **it

Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson are two artists from Providence, Rhode Island. Together, they form the band Lightning Bolt, a sonic force, a wrecking ball of deliberate energy. Their lives, to me, seem bound to a singular credo: keep making **it. https://lightningbolt.bandcamp.com/music https://www.instagram.com/chimpendale/ https://www.instagram.com/bad_barkley/ https://youtu.be/3NZGbD236fw?si=0mLX253l_wn8jOct ⚡

People can complain about Secret Lairs all they want, but this is exactly why I love them! Without SL he wouldn't have painted a magic card, you wouldn't have made this video and introduced me to them and I wouldn't have gotten to know new cool art and music. And that goes for so many fantastic artists, that wouldn't have found their way into regular magic.

Great video, Sam. Brian and Brian remind me a lot of a former local band Double Dagger, two guys who were also artists and together ran a graphic design studio called Post Typography. Worth checking out if you like Lightning Bolt.

Loud and short was correct, jammed out to this in the shower, which if i did for every video would waste too much water. The creative energy of community in shows, particularly for me has been local punk shows, is hard to translate for people that haven't been there. I think this video does a great job at overcoming some of those barriers to peer in and appreciate what's happening here, even if loud music isn't your jam. The end left me very inspired, in a way that's fitting for watching on new years. Balancing work to keep bills paid, and play has been tough, and there's always a dozen half finished projects i "wish" i had time to complete and see through. A sudden cut from the onslaught of noise and the card is staring right into me, you cant just wish it, you need to cast it, however you're able to get the energy to do so. The brians show what life is like diving in and living in the act of creation. There's something so raw and beautiful seeing it come together and getting it out to the world, not worrying and fixating on what it could be or should be. In bold black letters a friend scrawls "MAKE **IT" it is so many things for different people, maybe its a career shift, playing an instrument, developing a new healthy habit, or a leap of faith into trying something new. For me its the comic I've been writing whenever I'm able to knuckle down the time. Whatever IT is, even if its just a short 8 minutes every day, take that time, improvise however you can, be okay and revel in the imperfection. The next time you can make it quicker, better, and stronger. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration, Thanks for the video, and happy new year!

It feels like Brian got it, and I’m still trying to figure it out

I think you are right. I don’t think SL is a problem, if anything I believe it is the right way of doing something unique, not the bullshit serialized cards or the unique one ring gimmick. SL are unique, shoutout awesome artists and don’t get in the way of normal folk who just want to crack some draft packs and play the damn game.

I got into lightning bolt in high school partly because of the insane Dead Cowboy video you showed at the end. Then I got into magic after COVID and almost purchased an artist proof of Whir that Brian was selling on instagram. Kicking myself for that one, but glad some more people are gonna learn about this incredible band from this vid. They’re not for everyone but if you can find a way to get lost in the noise there’s not much else like them.

Been reading this like “make it make sense”: “make it make **it”. Absolutely killer.

I haven’t watched the video yet - but hey did you know that Black Lotus is no longer the most valuable MTG card?

I’m excuse the language, but I fucking love discovering rack bands I’ve never heard of. Especially those with sick unique sounds!!
