Welcome, everyone. Thank you so much for joining my page. My life changed in a significant way this weekend, and it's because so many of you decided to support the channel directly. I can't thank you enough!

1) If you signed up to donate at least $5 per video, make sure your address is current in Patreon. Many of you did not submit an address to your profile, so I cannot send you a card. I will be mailing 400+ envelopes this weekend, so Sunday will be your last chance to assure your address is updated if you want your reward!

2) I will be hosting an exclusive Q&A for Patrons to celebrate reaching my goal. If you're curious about my work or my life, submit your questions to this post. I will be recording a podcast responding to your questions later this week.

Thank you so much. I'm thrilled for this new era of the channel,Sam

With the PhD out of the way should we call you Dr. Sam, Dr. Rhystic, or Dr. Studies?

Taylor Hodges

Christian Holmes

What’s your favorite blink-182 album/song?

Eddie Hock

What of your experience with Italian studies informs your work on the channel the most?

Marco

Happy to support an awesome creator! Q: What draws you to Magic more than other card games? Is it the art, history, gameplay, community, or something else?

Isaac Hopwood

Hey Sam! What was your initial inspiration for creating such thoughtful video essays on MTG? I believe we'd all admit that this particular game does warrant such a treatment, but was there a specific card/set/piece of lore that set you on this path? Thanks!

Alex Schroeder

Happy to support quality content creators when I can :)

Albert Buixade Farre

You have mentioned you were in grad school. I don’t know what are your formal areas of training. Could you please tell us a bit more about your background (educational and otherwise), and if and how those feed into the wonderful artistic/cultural/architectural analyses you do in Rhystic studies?

Angel

Is there a single card whose art you like the most? And if that's too hard what's you're top 3? I'm honored to be supporting your channel, your content is truly what inspired me to become an artist and I'll always be thankful for that.

Quinton James Macdonald

Sam, what advice would you offer to someone aspiring to get into a PhD program? Thanks for all the inspiration you bring, cheers!

Albert Buixade Farre

What are the three MTG sets that are the most artistically appealing to you, and are there any that have little or no appeal for you?

Mitch Makurat

What was the most fulfilling video to make?

Alex Engelsman

Do you have a “white whale,” a video you want to make but just can’t make it work?

Alex Engelsman

Are you an the GF staying in Austin now that you’ve finished at UT, or are you seeking greener pastures elsewhere?

Gryphon

Is Rhystic Studies going to be exclusively covering Magic the Gathering IP as subject matter?

Zachary Kennington

Hey Sam. I’ve been a fan of your videos for a very long time. You’ve actually inspired me to start making my own videos over my field of expertise, military-style exhibition drill. Could we have some insight into your video making/planning process?

Juan

As a follow-up to this question: If so, how do you intend to handle the Universes Beyond crossovers?

Austin Williams

I heard you on the Command Zone podcast a few years ago I think it was. Do you have plans to be on an episode of game knights or any other channel to play magic? I’d love to know about some of your personal favorite cards and decks.

InsertCleverNameHere

What inspired you to pursue Italian Studies for your Ph.D? I noticed some of it bleeding through into the Ravnican architecture video and no doubt it heavily informs the Art Studies series Otherwise, I just want to say thanks. Your videos (especially the Black Lotus one) were one of the main inspirations that got me interested in Magic.

Sal Sanchez

It's good to have you back, Sam! You're videos are one of the biggest reasons why I got into magic. I'm not sure if you've answered this in the past, but what got you into magic? A follow-up to that, what is the best way for someone to get into magic?

Nadav Benjamin

You've analyzed almost every component of a magic card in your videos, from the name all the way down to the flavor text, except for one. Do you plan to make a video about the type line?

Okzo

Did younger Sam ever dream about becoming a painter?

Jamie Katz

I’ve been enjoying your works for years (thank you) and am excited that you can really focus on it now. If you could curate an in person gallery/museum what would it be? Magic or non-magic.

Richard Karnes

Hey Sam, Richard from Seattle congrats on the support. Two questions for you. Your videos are very professionally put together, do you have a background in video editing? or possibly someone who helps you with it? Oh, also what part of the country are you from?

meetaig

First time ever patron on any channel here :) Glad that I could help with this new chapter! Q: Through you I found MrForestGuy and I got some pieces altered from him. How do you approach altered cards? Do you go by artist or is theme also important? And: Do you want to show your collection? I would really be interested to see!

Viktor Fellbrink

Sam I know your channel is about Magic the Gathering, but you are such a source of inspiration to me in a broader sence so I have three non-mtg questions and you can pick any or all of them (preferably) to answer: 1. What were your top five favourite bands while you were in high school? - and if you have time, hit me with your favourite songs from those bands. 2. What’s the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 game you think have aged the best? 3. What’s your favourite non-starter middle evolution stage pokemon from the first 151?

Fearghal Donnellan

Hi Sam, Congrats on finding the support you deserve for the amazing work you do. My question is about media that you reference in your videos. You're good at giving context for ideas through referencing film and music, so I'm curious about what films and music you feel have greatly influenced you. Again, well done on the channel, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next.

Taylor Cohron

Hi Sam, your work is honestly some of the best in the entire MTG YouTube space! I wanted to know, and if its not already a video it would make a decent one, what MTG psychographic profile do you find yourself closest to, Spike, Johnny, or Timmy? I find myself to be mostly a Johnny, the game's mechanics just keep me endlessly fascinated.

Isaak

As an austrian I always wanted to have an honest answer to this and seeing that you studied italian studies you might be the perfect person to ask. How do italians see austria and what do you think is the general feeling regarding south tirol.

Ryan Warriner

I'm wondering, what prompts you to build MTG decks? Thinking specifically about EDH, do you find yourself more drawn to characters with stories/histories, specific color combos/mechanics, art, or something else?

MURDER SNACKERS

Which sentence or line (from any kind of text) has affected your life the most intensely?

Jeff Bailey

Q1) What other constructible card games (so including Living Games like Netrunner and Ashes) have you played, and do any of them still have space in your game storage? Q2) Are you on MTG Arena? (No need for your user handle there.) Thoughts on the MTG Beginner Set as a silent component of Standard? Q3) Any tabletop board games or non-constructible card games make your ownership cut?

Samuel Smith

Hey Sam, Q: what do you think of the evaluation or de-evaluation of magic art? Do you think its better now? worse ? same but different?

Chris Duddy

I really want to know the answer to this too!

Chris Duddy

Hi Sam, congratulations on the PhD. I'm delighted to be a new patron (having loved your content for years now). My question is a bit left-field, but do you enjoy poetry? If so, do you have a top three favourite poems or poets?

stillcary

Do you (or did you) ever struggle to anchor down your video topics against MTG's ever-shifting focus? Between news, announcements, and releases, most creators tend to gravitate towards topics of the day/week and faster turnaround rather than your more removed and patient approach. Would you encourage other creators to look at things—for lack of a better word—"atemporally" when it comes to making Magic content?

Caleb

Hi! and congratulations on your PhD! Have you ever considered an update/sequel to the frame video considering all the new frames/treatment of the last few years (showcase/secret lairs, etc)?

Dalton Cagle

I love your videos! Do you have a favorite Magic card and/or card art? Mine is Blightning.
