They added this moment as it wasn't in the game. The game ends with Ellie saying "ok" and cut to credits. We now get to see Joel's reaction after she says "ok", and it's clear he knows something is not right. But he is going to force himself to believe that everything is ok. It's a very human thing to do. People do this every day. FYI Joel is now 61. My personal opinion (and it's just an opinion) is that Joel did not save Ellie necessarily for Ellie's sake. He knows Marlene was right and that Ellie probably would've sacrificed her life willingly. What Joel was really doing was protecting himself from the awful pain of losing a daughter again. He would do anything to not feel that again, and lying to her is part of that self protection. I think he knows deep down that Ellie would hate him for killing Marlene and taking away her potential life's purpose. "It can't be for nothing". We've been with him all this time so we understand. I sympathize. He had that horrible pain for 20 years and cannot take it happening again. But I'm also with Sam. It can't justify everything. Betraying the trust of someone who loves you. And not to mention mass murder which I have a big problem with. Joel is not a bad man. American society ended in 2003 and he has no problem with Ellie being gay. But I don't believe he even justifies all that he did. If someone has to say, "I'm a good man", he's probably struggling with believing he is.

I was playing through part 2 again this week, prior to the show's release and wondered what would they had done had Ellie said, 'no thanks', if Marlene had explained the endgame of the surgery.

The only thing that was mildly-frustrating was Ellie & Dina acting so out of character at the start. This is a show thing that I hope is toned down a bit, they're not like this in the game at any point. Aside from that, a solid start to season 2 IMO. The enemy after Ellie fell is indeed called a Stalker, as you correctly named it.

Simon

How were they acting out of character? They got their dynamic down pretty good I reckon.

Smooticus

Gonna give this one three more weeks to start watching so i can binge a few episodes at once then catch up on the reactions (normally it's two, but Ihave JordanCon nextweek...shameless plug)

AdrianF

I just thought their behaviour outside the supermarket was too immature/reckless compared to how their characters behaved in the game at that point.

Elijah Ramirez

I agree with you but I just keep my expectations for character personality/decisions in check by reminding myself that this is "TV Ellie" and not the Ellie that's been in 10000x more combat scenarios that is in the game. Think of them as two different characters.

TBR Schmitt

Interesting! It was pretty reckless but I guess we needed some motive to get them inside haha -Sam

And so we begin season 2. Solid start, and I'm loving the portrayal of Dina. Haha. That therapy scene between Joel and Gail was so intense, mostly due to Pedro's facial acting and the amazing guitar score. "I saved her." Flawed, but so powerful. I can't wait for episode 2.

Man when those stalkers show up in the game,it was one of my favorite moments, but also very nervewrecking.

OddThomas

Ellie uses the knife because it saves bullets and gunshots might draw in more infected

In the game, E&D are on their own patrol at that point. I guess you're right, and that because they were now part of a larger patrol in the show, it had to do something to separate them. Nearly Monday (Sunday for you guys?)!
