Christopher Larimer

Oh hell yeah, was gonna play Elder Scrolls IV remaster, but this takes priority lol

Brian Anthony

I was team Ellie playing this game but not cause I didn't understand Abby viewpoint. You just don't have an attachment to her and Daniel hit it right on the head, with his master chief comparison.

Yep... this was/is the turning point of the entire franchise. Trust me, the majority of the fandom were all "FUCK ABBY" when she killed Joel in the game (me included), and I'm sure that majority are the same way now, just hopefully with a much more clearer headspace about it. The voice actress for Abby in the game (Laura Bailey) received SO much backlash and even DEATH threats for this. It still makes me sick to my stomach, because she's literally one of the sweetest people in the business. I do hope the live actress for Abby doesn't go through that same ordeal, because she was absolutely phenomenal in this episode. I was one of the ones that finished Part II, so I get it now. Hopefully as the season goes on, the narrative will be a lot more clearer. Either way, I'm excited to see what happens next. RIP, Joel Miller.

Yep, video games are designed for you to bond and feel for the character you're playing as, and when that's taken away, you become literally lost and consumed by anger. If the first Last of Us game starred Abby instead of Joel, and the opposite happened to her, we'd all be like "FUCK JOEL". lol Character attachment can be a gift and a curse, sometimes.

Daniel’s excited his comparison is well received haha I’m very curious what comments will look like on this! I need to check out some other reactions too! -Sam

I promise I will NOT spoil anything that happens further than this point in the story. But if you are determined to play the game, then don't read further. - What happens to Joel happens very early into the game as well. And actually Tommy is the one with Joel when they meet the Seattle crew. Like Dina, Tommy is also knocked out unconscious - There is no attack on Jackson in the game. No big battle. The horde in Season 1 was not in the game either. These were incredible additions by the show. We definitely have infected who are chasing Abby, but nothing is happening at Jackson - When Abby does what she does, in the game we don't have a clear idea what her motivations are. There is no scene by the graves with the other remaining Fireflies. She and these people are a mystery to the player - The first thing we see in the game after the 5 year jump is Ellie waking up to Jesse knocking on her door. So pretty much everything in episode 1 is additional material. We overhear that Ellie and Joel might be having tension, but we don't see any scenes of them in direct conflict

I was reading about those death threats the voice actress got. That’s insanity!! -Sam

As for my personal opinion (and I won't be reading any comments on this comment lol) The Last of Us Part II is my favorite video game. I mean, look at my profile pic. But not trying to convince anyone of anything. It's like food or music. If you don't like it, no one can talk you into liking it. I think what happened is people played The Last of Us in 2013. The sequel didn't come out until 2020. So fans had 7 years to think about it, play it again and again, and they became really attached to that first game. Their love only grows. Then Part II comes out and it has to live up to everyone's relationship to the first game on top of already enormous expectations. And I completely understand. Kids today really like the Star Wars prequels, but for me knowing only the original trilogy for 16 years, Episodes 1-3 or 7-9 could never compete with those memories. Even the Last of Us TV show had 2 years for fans to think back on Season 1. I got my first PlayStation in 2020. So I played through Part I, and then within minutes I started Part II. I didn't even take a bathroom break. So my experience is clearly not like most fans. For me it was really exciting to play as Ellie. The first game took big chances and I admired the huge chances they took in Part II.

AdrianF

It's a superb game for sure.

For me the game managed to pull off what it intended*, so with the Master Chief comparison it'll be interesting to see what you guys think going forward. Daniel hit it on the head that if you'd being playing a game called 'Abby saves humanity', then Joel would be the villain in that, and you as the player would be rooting for Abby. *Minor spoiler: SPOILER! At the end of the game I liked Abby... perhaps more than Ellie.

Yeah man, gamers were fucking MAADDDD 5 years ago. What's actually interesting is that the show restructures the story so that you get to know Abby a little more before the big event. In the game, you have NO IDEA who she is, and you don't know for about a dozen hours of gameplay.

Simon

Just wanna add, they made it very clear through the marketing and trailers that you'd be playing as Ellie in the second game. So not playing as Joel (apart from the first few minutes) shouldn't have been a surprise. Now whether you thought that was because he was dead, or he would be your AI companion, I dunno...IMO it felt obvious which of those was the case. Also, it's not like Joel was the only playable character before the second game. As for playing as Abby, the whole point at the start was to make you mad. Then later on to give you her perspective, as they did in these first two episodes of S2.

Simon

Oh also, you can totally not connect with Abby and want her to die. But as long as you at least get where she's coming from and understand her motivations. Personally, I love Abby, and think she's totally justified (I would do the same to someone who mercilessly and casually murdered my parent). Also, her part of the game is so fucking fun to play.

Stanley Etienne

I hate Abby with all my soul, and this is the reason that I never watched this show. Never even finished the game either,

AdrianF

Bloater was the name you missed btw.

Javier B

I, like most players were on team Ellie. But throughout the game I would jump back and forth between team Alley and team Abby. It gets very complex

Adverb

The second game is brilliant. You play as Ellie for most of the first half of the game and then switch to Abby. I hated Abby up to and through a lot of her part of the game. By the end of the game I had a lot more sympathy for Abby than Ellie.

Ian

Great outro guys 👌 eff Abby I literally want her to get ended so bad now I'm with Sam that's what makes me want to continue watching. I havnt played the games but I've been spoiled on a lot of things so I knew about Joel but episode 2 what the frig 🤷 anyways a great episode none the less . Hope you don't get spoiled guys it's hard to avoid them tbh I don't know if you have mods that check the comments for spoilers for you or not even though deleting spoiler comments just holds them for review so you would still see them , I'm talking YouTube comments here , patreon comments are different. it does help with a heads up though 👍 anyway cheers guys for the awesome reaction

Took me awhile to watch this episode, but it wasn’t as depressing as I thought it would be. I definitely will keep watching because I want to see Ellie kick Abby’s ass from here to high heaven. I did stop watching The Walking Dead after Glenn was killed. I just couldn’t take that one.

Abel Salas Jr

I never played the games, but I had looked into some things about it in relation to the series. And I agree with your assessment that it was a bad move to kill Joel. And the proof would be that the Original Last of Us sold 30 million units whereas the Sequel only sold 10 million.

Alex

I refused to even acknowledge the existence of a second game because of this and some other reasons, but this was the main one. It just doesn't make any sense at all. I'm just gonna leave it at their intention wasn't on making a great story but on something else.. But yeah I don't agree that killing off main characters works in TV shows either, coz I can tell you exactly when many MANY a show got cancelled because of when they decided to kill off a main character from the show. Especially when it's someone you love. But yeah this makes me think of Dexter because Dexter was one of those shows where I know exactly why it was cancelled.. The only reason I mention this is because Dexter: Resurrection is absolutely amazing and has completely redeemed the franchise in my eyes. I can't remember if this was before I knew about your Patreon or not. I think I may have watched Dexter New Blood with you guy or I watched a couple of your YouTube videos and then I watched the whole thing myself.. I remember I wrote a long comment on how much I hated the ending soo much, and how they totally ruined the franchise and how coz I hated how the original show ended too.. Of course, I have no idea how Resurrection will end because I'm only up to episode 4, they're dripping one per week.. But it gives me Resident Evil 4 vibes, because it's like.. Coz in RE4 you have them in the village and then out of no where this thing comes in out of left field it's like wtf? Dexter Resurrection is like that in a very good way and I love it for the same reason I loved RE4. Obviously I'm not gonna spoil it but it's like it adds a great depth to the show, and it just takes it deeper, and I love the new characters. It feels very Resident Evil Village too.

Alex

Oh I did want to say I probably wouldn't have even watched season 2 if you guys didn't react to it.. I am very glad you did coz I know the show's probably gonna be good, but watching with you guys.. You guys have always made me enjoy things I would have not otherwise enjoyed.. So I knew it would be really good and I'd enjoy it watching it with you guys. Still never gonna play the game. LOL I was actually planning to but I didn't know that you play as Abby and you kill Joel in the game.. F that....

AdrianF

Abby's probably the best character and you're missing out by not playing it (my opinion) but I get it pissed a lot of people off. FWIW, I thought Season 2 of the show was garbage in the end compared to the game, despite a strong-ish start.
