Almost Famous (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Mantis

Cant wait to watch this one with you. As one who grew up in the 70's when music was EVERYTHING, this is my #1 go to feel good movie...never ever gets old.

TBR Schmitt

Love this! I hope you enjoy! Can't wait to hear your thoughts! -Sam

Brian

"Lock the gates!"

Foggy

it’s all happening!

Steve Mercier

"Rock stars have kidnapped my son!" Yeah, this is a good one. Patrick Fugit needs to be in more things. So does Frances McDormand, even though she's in a lot of things. That is all.

Paul Cox

Loved your reaction so much! A few quick points: This is a fictionalized story based on Cameron Crowe's own youth (Stillwater is a stand-in for an amalgam of a few different groups). Creem Magazine and Lester Bangs are both real things, though before this movie Bangs never had such a warm fuzzy reputation. Not sure he would've loved that (he passed in 1982), but PSH definitely created a brilliant character out of him. One quick cameo of note: when William was trying to chase down a taxi in NYC to go to Penny's hotel, Jann Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone, was the man inside the last occupied cab.

Paul Cox

I think of this movie at least twice a week every week because Marc Maron still uses that drop in his podcast intro.

Tyler Foster

I tried to give you a heads up in the drawing post but it must have slipped by: there are two cuts of this movie. Both are widely available both physically and digitally, but for when you watch it again, there is a longer version that adds almost 40 minutes (2h3m vs 2h41m). I think the section most improved by this comes later in the movie, when Penny is "traded" to Humble Pie. This is an autobiographical movie for Cameron Crowe, who did write for Rolling Stone Magazine at 15 years old. It was through this head start that he was later able to infiltrate a high school to examine trends and culture and write a book, which was Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a non-fiction book that he himself adapted into a fictional movie. That movie was directed by Amy Heckerling, who would later make a second seminal high school movie in Clueless, which just won that upcoming female directors poll. In addition to Fast Times and Almost Famous, and Jerry Maguire -- you guys never remembered the name! -- the three other Cameron Crowe movies that would be great for reactions are his rom-com Say Anything, his '90s Seattle grunge scene movie Singles, and his second team-up with Tom Cruise, Vanilla Sky. If you've ever listened to Marc Maron's WTF podcast, the sound clip of him yelling "lock the gates!" plays over the intro. Stillwater is indeed fictional.

I love this movie so much! Sam got it so right in saying she liked the way the movie made her feel. I watch this movie with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye. Patrick Fugit (William) was so fantastic too, you can also see him in a supporting role in Matt Damon's "We Bought a Zoo".

Matt DSM

Absolutely loved that reaction. Thank you! If you love Frances McDormand, check out “Wonder Boys”. She stars along with Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey Jr, Rip Torn, & Katie Holmes. Great movie.

Anatol

You have no idea how hard it was to sync up my DVD version that's almost 40 minutes longer... but it's such a great movie and such a great reaction so it was worth every single one of the hundred pauses... :) I just hope you get to watch the "real" movie one day on your own time.

Florian Meier

Yeah !! Wonderboys is Fantastic !!

Florian Meier

What a great Film !!! Kate Hudson in Her First Big Role ... Speaking of Kate Hudson, Guys please watch "Overboard" with her Parents Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn ;)

Paul Cox

Kurt isn't her bio dad fwiw

Florian Meier

Yes !! You're right ... But i think He is like a father for her

MacGuffinStuff

Great reaction, and it's so fun for me because I do love music from that era so much. Definitely a coming of age film and I relate to music that same way, music was such a huge part of my youth and still is. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest "Singles", another Cameron Crowe film, I can't objectively say how good it is, because it's a big nostalgia type movie for me: Nineties, Seattle, Grunge lol

MacGuffinStuff

I love this soundtrack, I even heard something from Yes, "I've Seen All Good People". I love rock stories, and Yes was a progressive rock band like Pink Floyd and Genesis, and made these long complex songs that would not usually get much radio time. So, story goes, a critic basically insulted them by saying they couldn't write a song that would do well on the charts, so they made "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" which is an absolutely badass song, that topped the music charts, plus the video was huge on MTV, just to prove the critic wrong.

Pennie Trumbull -- the real life Penny Lane -- has had a pretty amazing life, too. She ended up getting an MBA, doing a bunch of promotion work, buying ranch and vineyard or something and basically just kind of won at life. Cameron Crowe called her when he was writing the film to get her permission to use her name and some of those experiences he had with her when they were both kids in the early '70s for the movie.

David Martin

I agree. Too, too bad the extended cut wasn't shown. It makes such a difference.

OddThomas

Another great Cameron Crowe movie is Vanilla Sky. Patrick Fugit played Owen in The Last of Us 2 (game).

Future Boy

The spin wheel winner specifically requested the theatrical cut.

Future Boy

Great reaction. This was just the kind of feel good I needed today! The Tiny Dancer on the bus scene is one of my favourite uses of music in a film. There's kind of a similar scene in Magnolia (1999), which I hope you'll get to one day! Oh, and that Tiny Dancer scene always reminds me of one of my favourite British commercials, where a little girl dances around her house for 90 seconds while Tiny Dancer plays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqgoUWPx4eE

Tyler Foster

Worth noting that she did later say she felt the movie totally misrepresented her, in an interview with Vulture.

Tyler Foster

Ah, I missed that. Just hope it wasn't over availability issues as they are equally accessible.

Chris H.

I talked to her a while back while doing some research on a tertiary subject to the Almost Famous stuff for a friend's potential book project. Let's just say that her views on the movie are complex and malleable. :) And to be clear and fair: Cameron Crowe has always -- including in contacting her in pre-production -- maintained that the character would have the name Penny Lane and some likeness, but otherwise be a composite of a number of girls he'd met while working as a Rolling Stone reporter.

Paul Cox

The two I saw on Amazon were 1:55 and 2:41. I know they streamed it on Amazon, but Daniel said the runtime was 2:03, and that matched the runtime of the one on Hoopla, so I followed along with that one instead. I assume the runtime on the theatrical on Amazon is a typo or something, because it was an exact match with what I was watching.

thomas king

This is one of my favorite movies ever. I was psyched someone finally reacted to it. Like u said Samantha, you can watch this film over and over and I do every time I see it on. If u allow yourself to just enjoy the ride the movie captivates you. Its a cool mix of combining nostalgia and story telling in a coming of age movie. The movie is based on Cameron Crowe's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone. I think that's why you find William's character believable .

Tyler Foster

A couple more things: You have seen Patrick Fugit, who played William, later in life, as the uniformed cop assisting Detective Boney throughout Gone Girl (who has a pretty pessimistic opinion of whether or not Affleck's character did it). I think the magic of Almost Famous is that is nostalgic for more than one thing. Many coming-of-age stories are *just* about the character coming of age, but then this is also about that moment in rock and roll. It also embodies the old adage that "the specific is universal." Although this is also a fictionalized adaptation of Cameron Crowe's personal story, the movie feels widely relatable.

TBR Schmitt

Thanks, Paul! I love a good cameo so thanks for that! I'd like to think Lester would appreciate what they did with his character haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you, Jen! Ooh would love to see more of Patrick! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks so much, Matt! I am always up for more FMD! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh shoot, sorry about that! I'm happy you still enjoyed it though! I'm excited to check out the longer version too! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL Love your description! Would definitely like to check out more Cameron Crowe, they've all been so different! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Very cool that he kept in contact with her before writing this and that you got to interview her too, Chris! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh yes this one has been recommended a ton! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

So glad you liked it! Okay wait, I loved that commercial haha so cute! And somehow feels like our not so distant future LOl -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Love your description, Thomas! So glad you enjoyed the reaction! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh didn't put that together we'd seen him before! It's incredibly well done, coming from someone that has no nostalgia from that time LOL -Sam

Mantis

I think this was the first time ive seen the short version since I first saw it in the theatre! Luckily I had it on the 2nd disc of the DVD version I have. Its really almost a different movie - still love it, but "Untitled" is a much superior version. If you get a chance to watch the uncut version, definitely do....and if you happen to come across the "special" DVD version, the extras are pretty great too....there was even a Stillwater CD:).

Ken Veader

Overboard is a classic

Dan Holmes

popcorn in bed also has an awesome reaction to this one :)

Backlog Andy M.

My wife showed me this film 🎥 some years ago now. I absolutely dug it. I didn't think it would be my thing to be honest!

rmv4life

I joined to watch this movie reaction but it's a shorter version than what I have. The copy I have is 40 minutes longer. Bummer....

TBR Schmitt
