Can we have an "All of the Above" option? 'cause this is almost impossible to choose.

Tyler Foster

Heads up in advance that Dances With Wolves and The Wild Bunch have multiple cuts. For The Wild Bunch, the "Original Director's Cut" is going to be the version that is most widely available on disc and streaming. Dances With Wolves is slightly more complicated: the extended cut is going to be more accessible, but the theatrical cut is the "director's cut," per Costner. It is still available, on many DVDs and one Blu-ray, but I imagine the digital copies are going to mostly be the Extended Cut. Regardless of what you go with, hopefully this is useful info.

Keith Brown

So many great picks but I will always go with the classic "The Searchers" ! "Silverado" is my favorite one made after the 1970's. I will also rather see the 1957 version of 3:10 to Yuma" than the remake ! Plus there are tons more John Wayne and James Stewart westerns you could just poll those legendary actors for real Hollywood westerns !

Brad P

A lot of great Westerns on this list but Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch are both as good as it gets.

Ashton Rice

You guys should include Hell or High Water in future western polls. Great neo-western film!

Keith Brown

You need to split this to multiple polls -(A) -Classic westerns 1930's-1940's. (B)-1950's -1960's westerns. (C)- 1970's-1980's westerns. (D)- 1990's to present westerns. -To many voters have no idea or knowledge that real great classic movies were made before 1975 .

EdmanXERO

It's not on the list, but I definitely recommend "The Harder They Fall" (2021).

Florian Meier

Yes Guys!! Finally !! All of them are Great !!! Hope you watch all !! Hard to Pick one

Aaron Barlow

Pale Rider is a Clint Classic. I remember when I was 13 and my Dad mum, sister and I were driving to the cinema to see it, my mum was upset at my Dad's driving complaining she was starting to feel ill and I said "my mum's a pale rider" Everyone laughed and mum felt better lol. One is never too young to start Dad jokes.

Aaron Barlow

Bone Tomahawk is brutal AF. It has the worst death I've ever seen in film, ever.

Dor

A *ton* of great movies on this list, but Dances With Wolves is on a whole other level.

Patrick

Once Upon a Time in the West! Bronson Bronson Bronson!

John Fitzpatrick

The Wild Bunch and Josey Wales. Now we're cooking!!

John Fitzpatrick

You need to include Little Big Man and The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid.

Smooticus

It's a shame none if these have a ghost of a chance of winning

Smooticus

Some excellent choices on this one. If Dances With Wolves wins - which it looks like it's going to - you should watch Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman as a companion piece.

Smooticus

Ha! I just mentioned LBM. Talk about a forgotten classic!

Lynette Cummins

Oh Silverado 1000% Such a great cast, it's my favorite western movie.

Lynette Cummins

That movie was so....as you perfectly put....brutal that I will never see it again. It was too much. I should have been suspicious when Stephen King loved it.

Carol Rocha

Dances with Wolves! Wow! I’m rootin’ for it!! A masterpiece IMO. I’m hoping it’s a first time watch for both of you. 👏🏼 I also like Silverado. “WIND RIVER” is an excellent movie and I’m pretty sure it’s considered a western. ❤️ BTW, this is an EXCEPTIONAL list, guys!!

Aaron Barlow

Stephen King in his novel 'The Mist' had the hero's family living at the end or something but said he preferred the dark ending they did in the movie where he shoots his son. Stephen King is definitely a bit twisted lol.

thomas king

Pretty much every movie on this list should be watched with the exception of The Quick and the Dead and Bone Tomahawk

Stephanie

I love so many movies on the list, but I would like to see a reaction to Open Range. It's such an underrated gem.

Paul Cox

I'm just happy Liberty Valance made the poll as an option. Will love to see your reaction to Dances With Wolves when it's all over (the theatrical cut is Costner's vision, he had nothing to do with the bloated "extended" cut).

Eugene

Hoping you’ll do Once Upon a Time in the West even if it doesn’t win the poll. 🤞

fire12wife

Bad Girls (1994) is a Western movie with a FOUR-FEMALE lead! Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stewart Masterson, Andie MacDowell, and a GORGEOUS 18-year-old Drew Barrymore! You'd love this movie so much!!! They play four saloon girls who find themselves in trouble with the law and travel the Old West together, looking for a better life. They came across a man who said he was a prospector (Dermot Mulroney, from My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)) is just a prospector traveling in the same direction... or is he? Kid Jared also appears in their travels, making it even harder to leave their pasts behind. I don't know of any other Western movie with a four-female lead! I saw this movie in the theatre when it came out and have loved it ever since!

ron clint

Whew very tough list! BUT... Bone Tomahawk is one sharp brutal and frightening film. Kurt Russell leads the fantastic cast. It has a huge cult following for good reason. Secong choice: Once Upon a Time in the West. It set the standard for story, cinenatography, and style. Legendary

ron clint

It wasnt underrated on telease. It did well with critics and audiences and is still widely regarded

Lynette Cummins

I remember my mom and sister discussing the book Pet Semetary. I couldn't believe they could read that kind of stuff. Definitely not my go to for book reading, I'm too chicken.

Will Zamora

The Wild Bunch above all.

Anthony Harris

Pale Rider won't win but it is my favourite Eastwood western.

James

The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the best westerns ever made. I wouldn’t call Dances with Wolves a western. It’s more of a period piece. But still one of my favorite movies

Antmovies

This list is really hard. I went with THE WILD BUNCH even tho Spaghetti Western journeys should really start with ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Gun to my head if you asked me which is the best I'd probably say THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. That and SEVEN SAMURAI and the two versions of 3:10 to YUMA are those rare instances where both versions are equally great in my opinion. The only one I haven't seen is HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, which I guess came out the same year I did 🎂 I gotta get on that. The only one I don't like is BT.

YoureMrLebowski

I hope The Outlaw Josey Wales wins. I'll just sit here whistling Dixie till it does.

Aaron Barlow

Stephen King is a literary genius though, he's the horror writer equivalent of John Williams the composer, he's written so many iconic, recognisable masterpieces, it's hard to understand where all his inspiration comes from. A dark place I'm assuming. In fact that's a good idea for a horror movie, a hugely successful writer discovers he's possessed by a demon, and all his ideas are the demon describing it's exploits from parallel dimensions. Then one day, his most successful book is a prophecy of what the demon is planning for the author, and it starts coming true lol.

Roy Wright

These are some of the best westerns ever but personal opinion is The Outlaw Josey Wales. I think Clint’s best movie

f hf

I swear you guys reacted to 310 to Yuma damn I must be going crazy lol

Michael Bauer

I think Open Range dont gone make it on this List. But i hope, someday in somekind of Kevin Costner film series, you watch it. I think its a realy good Movie/Western (Story) and maybe one day, you will watch the series "Yellowstone" with Costner. Sorry for my bad English. Greetings from Germany.

Florian Meier

I love this Film!!! Could also go in a Horror Poll ;)

Lynette Cummins

I agree he is a a great writer, and his movies are iconic. Every now and then everyone like a good scare, and he delivers.

Birdie Num Num

wow, this is the first western poll since 2022! what a nice surprise. And I see some new titles that weren't in the last polls - High Plains Drifter, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Open Range, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, True Grit. May I suggest Shane for the next poll? In addition to consistently making best western lists over the years, it was a seminal western for the industry in terms of elevating the genre - got a higher budget that westerns usually got and it took a year to edit the film (in those days studios cranked out movies quickly, this was sort of unheard of - the director George Stevens was a Kubrick like perfectionist.) It got nominated for Best Picture - the academy didn't nominate westerns that often - after this year another western wasn't nominated again until 1963, and after that not until 1990! Shane was added to the National Film Registry for being culturally or historically significant. It does deal with similar themes to Unforgiven(and is quoted in a significant scene in Logan - so obviously filmmakers today regard it highly) And Pale Rider is almost a remake of Shane, so clearly Clint is a fan.

Paul Cox

I've seen virtually every Clint Eastwood movie at some point in my life—some not in a very long time—because I had an ongoing project in high school to tape as many of his movies off TBS as I could (and in the old days, TBS was basically the Clint Eastwood channel lol).

Tyler Foster

They've already started their spaghetti Western journey long ago by watching the Dollars trilogy, so the Once Upon a Time in the West ship has already sailed...not that I wouldn't be extremely excited for a reaction to it.

Birdie Num Num

Don't know if any of you follow Madison Thames, but she probably has reacted to more westerns than any other reactor. and she writes Western novels and rides horses, so she brings an interesting perspective to the reactions. She's even reacted to Lonesome Dove, which I never though anyone would tackle. Has reactions to Liberty Valance, High Noon, Rio Bravo, Wild Bunch, Shane, The Cowboys, Red River, My Darling Clementine, Stagecoach, Little Big Man, True Grit, The Big Country, Open Range. She posted earlier in the month that she might have to shut down her channel due to losing money on it etc unless her patreon grew to a certain level and I guess it did.

Antmovies

Oh yeah. I'm old. I forget. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Tyler Foster

You will be hard-pressed to find another with four leading ladies, but some other recommendations that I have either seen or heard of: • Ballad of Little Jo, The (1993) • Cat Ballou (1965) • Forty Guns (1957) • Johnny Guitar (1954) • Keeping Room, The (2014) • Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017) • Meek's Cutoff (2010) • Quick and the Dead, The (1995) - on the poll! • Sweetwater (2013) • True Grit (2010) - one of the films I'm most devastated can't ever be on the channel because Dan and Sam have both seen it • Woman Walks Ahead (2017)

Tyler Foster

Although Costner does prefer the extended cut, I think he's doing a bit of contemporary fudging when he says he "had nothing to do with it." The extended cut premiered in theaters back in 1991, and the release of it was accompanied by a statement credited to both producer Jim Wilson and Costner explaining the reason for the longer version (we're not going to make a sequel, so here's more of the world and the characters you've responded to), and detailing the changes made. As this was at the height of the film's popularity, after the movie had won several Oscars, I cannot imagine the studio willingly jeopardizing their relationship with him by allowing a longer cut to be created behind his back and then slapping his name on a press release to promote it without at least some kind of tacit approval from him. The challenging aspect, as I noted in a different comment on this post, is that the "extended edition" was the primary HD master for many years and therefore, the version provided to streaming retailers like Amazon and Fandango/VUDU. The theatrical cut was finally released in HD a few years ago on a three-disc Blu-ray from Shout! Factory, and it has been available in some other countries, as well as on older DVDs, but it is significantly easier to get ahold of the Extended Cut than the theatrical version.

Paul Cox

Straight from Costner's mouth: Kevin Costner has done his share of audio commentaries, but he won’t be blamed for excesses that might’ve attended video releases of some of his movies. ”I didn’t work on the long version of Dances With Wolves,” he points out. He’s all for deleted scenes — as extras, not as grist for protracted ”directors’ cuts.” ”I release the versions I want. They are long, so I don’t need for ’em to be any longer.” https://ew.com/article/2004/01/23/true-western/

Boris-N

For future Western film poll, Soldier Blue (1970)

Chris B.

Here to give more love to Pale Rider, a movie I think is always deserving of more love.

Mr. Chumpus

And I thought they did Bone Tomahawk. Must be someone else

Paul Cox

To clear up any confusion about the differing versions of Dances With Wolves, and since Amazon is usually your first stop when sourcing a film, I checked: The extended cut is included with subscription. The theatrical cut—Costner's preferred version and the version that won actual awards—is a rental. But both are on there. The main reason I'd advocate for the theatrical cut, aside from what I mentioned above, is that it's more beneficial to watch the shorter, leaner version of the film first (which is funny, because that's still 2 hours and 53 minutes) and then someday see the extended cut to determine whether or not what was added (an HOUR of additional movie) makes it better or worse for you. But if you start with that version and then watch the theatrical cut, you'll constantly be thinking about what's missing. I've only watched the extended cut one time and imo Costner's own theatrical cut is a way better movie.

Florian Meier

I would vote for the longer Extended Version ... I watched it many Times and for me it would be so much missing ... I think the Shorter Version was made only for the US at the Time (said Google :)) ... In Europe the Extended Version was shown in Cinemas

Backlog Andy M.

Silverado, Pale Rider, Once Upon A Time In the west. 3/10 to yuma outstanding 👏

Backlog Andy M.

Once Upon A Time In The West has one of the best openings to a western ever. It's so cool 😎

Ken Veader

Rio Bravo (1959) absolute classic

Backlog Andy M.

Absolutely 💯 Clint Kept the western genre alive in the 70s into the 80s ending with Unforgiven in the 90s!

Backlog Andy M.

One Eyed Jacks, Hombre, Nevada Smith are good ones 👌

Backlog Andy M.

This is tough. Outlaw Josey Wales. Got that on 4k classic 😎

David Wilkins

For the Group audience, I agree. At almost 3 hours, and presenting a very solid version, that’s plenty.

David Wilkins

Yes, for me it’s second only to Unforgiven, so far as Eastwood westerns.

Birdie Num Num

Great list, but sort of shocking to see The Searchers in last place - among all westerns it consistently places the highest in critics polls of the greatest films of all time.

Paul Cox

The Searchers seems to be highly regarded among people who are already well-versed in westerns*, but it's a tall order for casual watchers because there's a lot of really headscratching stuff about it. (*except for me, because I don't like it very much.)

Ken Veader

Yeah its an absolute classic crazy that it's this low

Roy Wright

The Outlaw Josey Wales being behind 310 to Yuma is criminal lol

David Wilkins

I’m surprised that Open Range and Silverado haven’t done better. They’re such great movies. Minor classics, IMHO.
