Tenet (2020) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Tyler Foster

I was just watching the edited version of Man on Fire, and in the outro Sam mentioned The Stepford Wives. This is technically cheating, because I really would rather see the reactions to the original movies in both cases, but maybe you could plan some sort of "original/remake" thing and do The Stepford Wives (1975) and The Stepford Wives (2004). I mention this because the last major Nolan movie you haven't watched is Insomnia (2002), which is also a remake, and the original is tragically underrated, so maybe you could do Insomnia (1997) and Insomnia (2002). (Actually, I might suggest doing these backwards, so that the remake gets to be watched without expectations, and then you see the version that came before it.)

I got goosebumps seeing 👀 the odyssey before Superman 🦸‍♂️

Robert Pattinson told Nolan he had a family emergency on the phone 📱 Nolan went your going to audition for Batman aren't you? Busted secert was out.

I said this in another thread but I'll repeat it here in solidarity with your post-watch comments. Nolan is my favorite director (after seeing Prestige when it came out, so I was earlier to the party). Tenet was my least favorite of his on first watch but I've re-watched it more than any of his other movies. I don't exactly understand all that's happening in the plot but it's still inexplicably mesmerizing to watch (at least for me). It's the weirdest relationship I have with any movie. Also, what did you two think of Superman?

This is timely after your introduction to Gilderoy Lockhart in The Chamber of Secrets.

David W.

Have you seen the stone plaque with all those Backwards forwards words?

-Spoiler- Never confirmed, but I'm firmly in the camp that Kat's son is Neil.

Brian's Dog

You both did great on your first viewing understanding of everything.

John David Washington kills it in this movie. You guys should put Blackkklansman on your list. He’s great in that and it’s an awesome movie.

I said this on the announcement post for the week in reply to someone else, and this almost the opposite of what you said in the outro, but I feel like Tenet is Nolan trying to combat some of his own cliches. His movies are often complicated, mathematical, precise. This one is too, but he does give the audience that out: "Don't try and understand it. Feel it." He put in the work but you can follow it instinctively rather than intellectually. Another frequent criticism is that he doesn't treat wives and girlfriends very well, in Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception. Kat goes through quite a bit, but in this one she gets to take her revenge into her own hands. The joy of the movie is in the characters -- The Protagonist's slickness, the warm bromance he has with Neil, watching Kat see the light at the end of the tunnel in escaping from her horrible abusive husband, and in the imaginative and head-spinning action.

I think you guys totally got it. like 90% - 95%. personally, I love this movie. the thing that makes this movie difficult for people is not that its a complex plot. its that its a complex plot and very very fast paced. even more so than Inception which was also action heavy and complex at the same time. thats why I have so much respect for Nolan. Not only does the guy do spectacular action, his plots are rich and mind bending. I feel like I have to sleep after I watch his movies. And the soundtrack in this one is awesome and jarring, I think because a lot of it was playing backwards.

So you’re only missing two movies from Nolan’s filmography: His debut film Following and Insomnia. I don’t know how easy Following is to find, as it is an indie film. But I definitely think you should do Insomnia, it would also be fitting since it came in 2nd on the thriller poll. It is by far his most conventional movie. One of Pacino’s last great performances and Robin Williams in a very different role from anything else!

I would love to see Chernobyl with you I haven’t watched it either but everyone says it’s incredible

They already watched it

James Miley

I haven’t seen Following but I’ve seen Insomnia several times and highly recommend it.

I did a watch-along with this reaction last night - it was a second viewing for me (the first being in the cinema). With the subtitles on, I could finally understand more of what was happening and why. I liked the movie when I first saw it but I can understand why anyone would be befuddled by it all. The concept is already so heady but throwing in breakneck plot twists and a messy sound mix, can be overwhelming. Another great reaction!

I did it like it better the second time around, so thanks to D&S for reacting to it

Charles Davies

Its a brilliant film, unfortunatley you need to see it 2/3 times to appreciate all thats going on

David W.

I had once watched FOLLOWING less-than-legally and from that I knew that it is on the Criterion Collection, so it is no longer too indie.

@Daniel & Sam. I really appreciate you two watching this movie. I know it’s a lot to absorb and take in. A lot of people have said that you have to watch it a couple times to really understand it. But I think you two did a fantastic job in your reaction. Yes, there are certain things you caught on very quickly, and then there were things that you questioned and I think that you should be doing that. Yes, watching it again you’ll see it come back around full circle. JDR did a fantastic job in this role. By chance, did you happen to catch his name? It’s never said throughout the whole movie. He’s just known as “the Protagonist.” And I still can’t believe that Ives was played by Aaron Taylor Johnson (aka kickass, aka Piotr Maximoff - quicksilver from MCU). Christopher Nolan does yet another great job in his story telling. Easily my top 3 directors of all time. Looking forward to your next biggest reaction… Preferably the movie I chose in the monthly drawing hehe

I think Stepford Wives and one other movie every time I bring it up I'm disappointed all over again that he's not seen it hahaha I can definitely see your point about this film! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Love this! I definitely think this would be more loved/appreciated with multiple viewings! We really enjoyed Superman! Definitely feels like a solid, fresh start to the Gunn series! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

No, is this in the movie? Or real life? lol -Sam

TBR Schmitt

He did! Will make sure that's on our list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you, Ed! Yes, you nailed it with this comment! The soundtrack was a highlight for me! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Woah, can't believe we've made it through almost all his films! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Can't wait to hear what you think! I think one of our first series on the channel! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you, Michael! So glad you enjoyed it more second time around (and with subtitles) haha the sound was definitely a little wonky! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely need to get on another watch! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you so much! Definitely excited for another watch to solidify everything! We totally didn't realize he didn't have a name until we pulled up the cast list to discus the outro haha wild! I feel like I only recently remember ATJ from Bullet Train and he quickly became one of my favs! -Sam

The Creator 2023 and BlackkKlansman 2018 for more John David Washington 🤙

In case you didn't know, Kenneth Branagh actually directed the first of the Thor movies (I mention it since you talked about Thor Ragnarok!) I don't know how well known he is in the US, but he's very well known here in the UK 😁
