This was on cable a lot when I was a kid, and it really ignited a love of classic movies for me. Hope you guys enjoy!

William Holden won the Best Actor Oscar for this.

The impression was James Cagney. Huge star in the 1930s and 40s.

Great job on this! That "wacky voice" is what's known as a "Mid-Atlantic" accent. When radio was going national in the 30s and 40s they were worried about US "regional" accents, so broadcasters basically invented that as a standard. And since radios of the time had crap sound quality the voice was high, stacatto, and with very harsh and very cleanly annunciated and clipped consanants. And, for advertising, they needed to talk as fast as possible to get all the message to fit in the shortest time space. ;-) Hey, another great war comedy-drama is Kelly's Heroes from the 70s starring Clint Eastwood as the lead. One of my favorite movies of all time! Yeah, '53 is just eight years after WW2 ended. So for us that would be like something from 2017 - like Afghanistan or something. Really recent. You got the reference to Bastogne. They also mentioned an SS Panzer Division closing in on Malmedy. That's a really pointed reference as there, during the Battle of the Bulge the SS had captured 84 Americans who got overrun and surrendered. They put them in a group and machine gunned all the unarmed prisoners. down. BIG War Crime trial over that. Brutal message about German (SS) treatment of other prisoners here. One last point is that the Stalag 17 camp was all American sergeants - gunners and radiomen and such. The Great Escape's Stalag 5 was all officers (all British except for three Americans) - mostly pilots and such - a more refined and sophisticated sort - like the snooty Lieutenant Dunbar.

I think Dan and Sam have mentioned having seen Community. Did anyone else out there recognize Leonard from Community? Fun Easter Egg.

Now start watching Hogan's Heroes

Wayne Kryka

Animal and Shapiro reprised their roles from the Stage play. Price was Peter Graves, famous later as the Airline Captain in AIRPLANE!

Never Seen Stalag 17 ... But you must watch more Billy Wilder !!! Some Like It Hot, Sabrina, The Apartment and Sunset Boulevard are a Must

John George

The guy who kept saying 'I believe it', was Edmund Trzcinski, one of the original writers of the play on which the film was based. He had himself been a prisoner of war in Stalag 17B.

Leonard likes this post! As someone else mentioned below, Richard Erdman, who played the barracks chief, Hoffy, would go onto play the eccentric elderly student Leonard on "Community." Also, agree with those below noting director Billy Wilder, who was one of the greatest directors in movie history. Double Indemnity (1944) would be my most-wanted Wilder for the channel, along with Some Like It Hot (1959), Sunset Boulevard (1950) -- which also has William Holden, and The Apartment (1960), along with many others. Also, if you haven't seen Chicken Run (2000), that's in part heavily influenced by Stalag 17.

Ace in the Hole is also peak Wilder. Think someone had it in the spin wheel once. I remember hunting down a bootleg of it circa 2000(it didn't have an official dvd or even vhs at the time!) Spike Lee has programmed it on TCM, he's a huge fan.
