Looks like my crappy Friday just got a whole lot better.

Bad hair day: the movie, lol

Shehab Dawoud

The hardcore book fans hate this movie because it's the one that probably deviates the most from the source material. The director Mike Newell, who also did Donnie Brasco, had either not read the book or not paid enough attention when reading. He kept complaining about how big it is. In the book, there were several mysteries going on, but in this movie, there was only really one mystery: Who put Harry's name in the goblet? Obviously, some things will have to be cut and changed but they decided to scrap almost all of it and make it more of a comedy with a lot more focus on the teenage drama than was the case in the book. It works to a degree; the movie is quite funny. The tasks and what happened in them were also different. In the first task, Harry actually got the egg pretty fast without him or the dragon leaving the arena. There was no way that the dragon would've had the chance to break free and endanger people; they would've stopped that. Newell also had a crazy idea that the dragon would chase Harry into the forest and burn it down. Thank God someone talked him out of it! In the third task, the maze is actually filled with magical creatures that the wizards have to use their skills and smarts to overcome. Mike Newell chose to bring the maze to life and turn it into a psychological thing where they could be forced to battle each other, hence the "you might lose yourselves" comment from Dumbledore. Barty Crouch Jr doesn't show up in the book until the end, when he's revealed as Moody in disguise. We do see him in the memory, but there he totally proclaims his innocence and begs his father, and we're later told he died in Azkaban, which makes it so shocking when everything is revealed. But in this one, he's there in the first scene, clearly evil, and while disguised as Moody, he does that tongue thing, which you also noticed. It just takes the mystery away a bit. Crouch Jr tortured Neville's parents to insanity. They're now in a psych hospital with no memory or knowledge of who he is. It was no coincidence that he chose to show the torture curse right in front of Neville. He knew it would scar him. Tells you how evil Crouch Jr was. As for Snape, yes, he was a Death Eater to begin with, but then turned and worked on the good side as a spy before Voldemort lost his powers. The other point of contention is the performance of Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. You guys wondered in the last one if Dumbledore's character changes in the books. The answer is no. He is always the same, smiling, happy, eccentric Dumbledore speaking with a twinkle in his eye. In this one, Michael Gambon just shouts throughout the movie. The most famous example is when he asks Harry if he put his name in the goblet. In the book, he asks him calmly and never manhandles him the way Gambon did. That's probably gone on and become the most famous HP meme, where people make fun of the differences. The only time book Dumbledore shows anger is when he confronts Crouch Jr, which makes it shocking in the book as we'd never seen that side of him before. But in this one, we see it throughout the movie. Gambon also didn't read the books, as he wanted to make it completely his own. Not sure he saw the 2 first films either. He does redeem himself later on and puts in some more Dumbledore-accurate performances. I'll say that much. As for Lucius Malfoy, everyone knew he was a Death Eater when Voldemort was first in power. But he claimed to have been under the Imperius control curse, so he got off. He's also rich and made contributions to the ministry, and probably ratted out some others to get clear. Harry did tell people about Lucius, but what happens after that.. you'll have to wait and find out! When Harry tells Dumbledore about his wand connecting with Voldemort's, Dumbledore mentions priori incantatem. That's an effect that two brother wands will do when they're forced to battle. Remember, we're told in the first one that Harry and Voldemort's wands share a feather from the same phoenix, which is actually Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes. When they battle to the death, the wand will regurgitate some of the last spells it used, which is why we saw Cedric, the old man, and the Potters. The last people Voldemort killed. But that was really the reason why Harry could keep up with Voldemort. If they hadn't been connected, Voldemort would wipe the floor with Harry, which is no knock on Harry, but Voldemort is the most powerful wizard, along with Dumbledore. You may also have looked this up, but the actress playing Fleur Delacour was also the scientist in Tenet, which is why it was so fresh. So a few connections to that film! I can see why the book fans are annoyed at this movie, but it was the first HP I saw in theaters, so it holds a special place for me, and it has a lot of good things going for it. Casting Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort and the way they executed the rebirth scene was close to perfect. The only mistake is when Voldemort calls Harry's mother a Muggle. As you pointed out, she is a wizard; her parents are muggles. Mudblood would've been more accurate. So, almost perfect. Alright, that might've been longer than my post in the last one xD But I hope you enjoy a little extra info and context. Can't wait for the next one!

Best part about this book is that it taught us all how to pronounce Hermione's name.

Goblet of Fire was the movie that brought me and a lot of casuals into Harry Potter in a big way. I liked the first three movies, but right or wrong, those movies were perceived as children's movies by the general audience and a lot of people just aren't into children's movies. The first three also had to compete with Lord of the Rings at the time and that was a phenomenon. But then Goblet of Fire comes out with its great energy, and it's so much fun with the tournament and the Yule Ball and Harry gets chased by a dragon which I had never seen before. And of course, we finally got Voldemort. Seeing him for the first time was so damn cool. And I was very impressed that the story wasn't afraid to be dark and they actually kill a young character. It's my second favorite of the movies and I'm particularly sentimental about it because it got me to start reading the books, which I do every year. They are a tremendous pleasure.

Ellie Williams

Also c'mon Mrs. Weasley! You can't send Ron out there in the wizard version of the Dumb and Dumber tuxedos. I mean can't Ron borrow something from his dad or oldest brothers? He's certainly jealous that Hermione is with Krum, but the clothes just made it worse.

Steve Mercier

My least favorite of the Harry Potter movies outside of the first two, I still dig this one. It leans heavily into the teenage drama elements, but the kids are the perfect age for that shit; and you still get a good dragon battle out of it. So, good shit.

Marcus Cato

Sadly Mrs Weasley doesn't have the best judgment on clothes (or money to replace old things).

Jen Barnes

Cedric embodies Hufflepuff, he's loyal, good, friendly, and courageous. His death is a total shock and signals the risk to anyone going forward. I really like this film and I think it only gets better on re-watch once you can look for all the clues. The dumb teenage stuff is so perfect for this age. All the petty jealousy, boy-girl drama, and massive insecurity is spot on for 14 year olds. I like that the films tackle different age-appropriate themes. And how great is Neville?!! I just love his character.

Patrick Doyle took over composing duties for this film and I really like his work. He's a very bombastic composer, and I love all the different songs he had to do for the in-universe music, like the March for the tournament and the band music for the last task, the different Yule Ball songs etc. Doyle is the composer for most of the movies Kenneth Brannagh directed. Brannagh was Gilderoy Lockhart in the second film and Sator in Tenet. He adapted many Shakespeare plays for the big screen and his Henry V, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing are wonderful films. Doyle only scored this Potter film. Two other composers will split the next 4 films. I love how touched and protective Sam is over Neville. She looked really distraught over him during the classroom scene. Understandable, because Neville is the best and deserves everything good. And shout-out to Jeff Rawle as Amos Diggory. Such a small part, but his wail over Cedric's body has haunted me ever since I first saw this film nearly 20 years ago.

Alexander Ocean

Man, love this movie. The next is one of my favs and KNOW you'll love it! Unsure of Daniel's Gryffindor house placement since he wanted to chuck Cho off of the tower stairs for saying no to Harry lmaoooooo

2026-09-06 22:00 Daniel, you absolutely crack me up with your one-liners! I'm starting to think that, just as a well-trained Slytherin would, you played the meta-game of the Sorting process - manipulating your answers to hide your real self hiding behind a Gryffindor mask. 🤔 That’s the kind of cunning, tactical behaviour Slytherins are known for. 😂 That said, when Cho called Harry back again, getting his hopes up only to disappoint him all over again by assuring him she really was sorry… yeah, that thought might’ve crossed my mind too. 😁

Lock_Down

Stuff s so bad you say 🤣 order of the phoenix will say hold my 🍺

Alexander Ocean

lmao THIS, he manipulated his way into making us think he's a Gryffindor haha

FischerMax98

Enjoyed the reaction very much. I agree that The Prisoner Of Azkaban is the best one so far. But the next two... the next two (books and movies) are always the ones that vie for my personal number 1 spot. Can't wait to see what you think.

Alexander Ocean

"It's a goblet. And it's on fire." - Daniel Schmitt 😂

Aaron Barlow

When Dan started saying "KRUM LIKE HERMIONE!" in a caveman voice it made me laugh so hard.

Aaron Barlow

Dan -"Shoulda pushed her, no one would know" 🤣🤣🤣

Aaron Barlow

Harry's mum Lily was a wizard, but her parents were muggles. Also I assume the pegasus-drawn carriage had the same Tardis spell on it that the Weasley world cup tent had on it.

Aaron Barlow

In the movie they never explained 'Priori Incantatum' the spell that made Harry's parents appear. In the books, they mention when 2 wands share the same core they connect via an energy bond and spit out apparitions of the people the wand has killed, so it wasn't really Harry's parents apparently, just illusions.

Aaron Barlow

Then Deathly Hallows will say 'hold my box of tissues'

Aaron Barlow

Remember, Slytherin Sam laughed hard at his comment lol

Aaron Barlow

Voldemordon Ramsey: "This chosen one blood is curdled! You're all idiot sandwiches! I told you to heat up the stone statue to keep Harry warm! Wormtongue! My Dad's thigh bone was undercooked, you seared it for half a second, you fucking moron!!"

Martin7777

There are 5 boys in the Weasley family and Ron is the youngest, so he always gets stuff that's been handed down a bunch of times already.

Martin7777

As a hardcore book fan, I've never heard people complaining about this movie.

Martin7777

You said each movie you get the wrong bad guy. You'll know in the next one.

Shehab Dawoud

I’ve seen quite a few. Check out the YT channel MovieFlame. He’s probably the top HP channel and breaks down things better than anyone.

Matthew Maxon

Super Carlin Brothers. They are doing a chapter by chapter breakdown & just finished GOF

sharkey197

Ron does behave a bit badly, but you have to understand where he's coming from. He has five older brothers. Both Bill and Percy were Head Boy at Hogwarts. Charlie was a renowned Quiddith player. Fred and George while not brilliant students were extremely popular. So he had a lot to live up to. Then he goes and becomes best friends with the most famous boy in the Wizarding World who ALWAYS gets ALL the attention. So he was bound to be resentful at some point that he always ended up in everyone's shadow. I am so loving you doing these commentaries. You bring such a high level of comment and enjoyment to them. You are making my summer. Can't wait for the next one which is my favorite.

Martin7777

Agreed, also a lot of Ron's goodness comes across in repeated small actions and support for Harry that don't make it across into the films. Ron really is a loyal friend who watches out for Harry, but as the fifth boy in a family of exceptional kids, he really is insecure and craves attention.

Matthew Maxon

so some others have already talked about Moody and how it was really BC Jr. Lets start with movie 2. So Dumbledore was hoping that Harry was going to be alright and when he got into Gryffindor. He was quite happy and then he defeated Parasite Voldy. In Chamber he hired that Professor Lockheart as lesson to Harry about letting your fame go to your head. In that movie he said that his highest dream was to make his own hair care line. The reason why Harry has money is that his GDad invented a hair care product. Hes got that family owns a company money. How Harry got those nice dress robes is that Mrs. Wheazly went to the bank and took out money for him to buy those. Harry would have been more than happy to give Family Weasley money, but they would not have taken it of course. In GoF Malfoy cursed Hermonie with a spell that made her front teeth grow much larger. Snape said he saw nothing wrong. She went to Nurse Pomfrey and she was shrinking her teerh and Hermoine just kept going until they were normal size. She, in the book, had some buck teeth that Malfoy teased her over constantly. With the release of Dobby and another elf mention in the book who was a servant of Crouch Sr., she was freed at the World Cup because she "didnt hold her Master's seat". In actuality, Jr was in the seat next to her and escaped. He was under an invisibility cloak. She was set free. Hermoine then created the Society for the Protection of Elfish Welfare (SPEW). She is smart sometimes not that bright IMO. There are so many different combos that could have been used. She made Ron and Harry Officers in the Society. Rasied a bit of money and Hermone spent many hours knitting socks, hats, scarves and gloves that she would hide around the castle and common room. Only Dobby would clean Gryffindor Tower as they didn't want to be freed like Dobby and the other elf whos names is escaping me at the moment. This was a major sub plot in the movie. The movie depiction of the trial of BC Jr was nothing like the book. He was led in with a few others you will meet and he was crying for his mom and dad to help him. In reality this was a ploy for lenient in sentencing. Barty "Heart of Stone" Crouch Sr. wasn't having it and sent him to Azkaban Prison. His wife was dying and so she went in under the cloak and changed places with Jr. She died and was buried at the prison. When Jr was captured, the Dementors came in and sucked out his soul immediately and Dumbledor couldn't stop them they did it so quick. Everyone in the room was of course filled with horror over it. They recognized him and knew that he had escaped. BC Jr was only one of a few people who had gotten 12 OWLs. Meaning he had a Time Turned at some point like Hermonie did. He could have been a contender to take Voldies power at some point. He was very talented and powerful young wizard. Maybe 30 or so when he was soul sucked by the Dementors. There is a theory that Mr. Argus Filch the Caretaker is a poltergeist. There is another poltergeist named Peeves. He is conglomeration of all the reckless rule breaking in the castle. Think the Golden Trio are the only ones fucking around? please!!! Anyway, the Yin to the Yang is Mr. Filch. He has an unnatural connection to Mrs Norris and can tell him where people are at. Why the Golden Trio (GT) ran from her in SS. He was right behind her. He is a Squib (Non magic person in a non-magic family supposedly) who cleans all day and then wanders the castle at night looking for student out of bed?!.... When does he sleep. Why does he clean when House Elves do that? There is a spell that called "Repairo" that puts stuff back together. Why the Wand Maker didn get pissed when all those boxes were shooting out all over the place. He can just "Repairo" and they go right back to where they were. Hermoine uses "Oculus Repairo" 2x on Harry. Filch "sleeps" in hte dungeons where all the "ruile breaking" items confiscated are kept. Harry's aunt on his uncle's side, DOES NOT know that Harry is a wizard. If Harry does magic outside of school in front of them, its no big deal as they KNOW him. His aunt DOES NOT!! Thats why her memory was modified. She also drowned a puppy in the book. The runt of the litter. Well, the neighbor did for her at her direction. She is a bad person. I feel no sympathy for her character at all. I had mentioned that Crookshanks was owned by the Potters before. You will meet a neighbor soon, wearing fuzzy slippers, whos also a squib but raises half Kneezle cats. They are a magic cat and thats why Crookshanks is so long lived. He's at least 20. Is also why when they were trying to find someone to watch Harry, while they went to the Zoo where Harry put Dudley into the snake enclosure he was there. They didn't want him to go. I forgot which one mentioned it about why let Harry go if the Dursley's hate him so much. They also dont want him happy in doing stuff. Thats why they let him go after Arthur Weasley, the twins and Ron came to visit. They came in through the fireplace, but it was boarded up because of the letters in SS. The twins dropped a Toffey they were working on that made his tounge 4ft long and mom was trying to rip out of Dudly's head after he picked it up and ate it. The TWC was also much more involved by the families. Harry had Mrs Weasly and the oldest brother Charlie in his corner and was there for final task and Harry in the hospital after. That is where Bill met Fluer and they become an item. Thats a little spoiler but not much. Harry wins 1k Galleons for winning the Cup and tried to give it Mrs. Weasley and Mr. Diggerory but both refused. He then gave it to the Twins for seed money on Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. Thats also slightly spoliery but not much. Its in the book but not the movies. He did make one request and that was they were to buy Ron new dress robes. As the youngest boy he gets all the hand me downs. This is all i have for now. Glad you really enjoyed.

Matthew Maxon

Age of Majority in the Wizard World is 17. Most students turn 17 in 6th Year. Harmoinoy is 14, maybe 15 & Crum likes her? Kinda icky at that age. Robert Patinson does Twilight after this. Igor Karkarov rats out people to get out of prison. After Voldy comes back, he is hunted down and murdered. Wormtail in PoA is the Servant reunited with his Master. He is the one who helps Voldy in his infant form. Milking Nagini the snake for food. BC Sr. WAS on his way to being Minister of Magic but when his son is convicted of torturing Nevil's parents, it ruined his career. Ron does get a bit jealous, but he does work out of it. He's Harry's "Ride or Die". He feels overshadowed by all his older brothers & Ginny is a place by herself as the only girl. The youngest of 7. Rita, is an unregistered Animagus, who's form is a beetle. She gets all this information that she shouldn't have known. Harmoine captures her & keeps her in a jar for like a year in beetle form. The spell of communication with your head in a fire is uncomfortable on your knees but only a bit warm on your face. Like travelling by Flue Powder.

TBR Schmitt

Thank you SO much for this comment! So much information to add after seeing the film! I can’t imagine not reading the source material before directing the film adaptation 😳 we still very much enjoyed it but could definitely see now with the amount of inconsistencies how that could be frustrating to fans of the book! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I was in denial that he was dead for sure! What a shock! The story is definitely aging perfectly with the characters so the teen romances and “school dance” fit in perfectly amongst the magic chaos haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes, yes and yes to everything in this comment! I do enjoy having different composers, gives each film a new vibe! Neville deserves better! Omg that final moment was absolutely heartbreaking! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

😂😂 and he makes fun of ME! I think we all know the truth 😉 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yay can’t wait!! So glad you enjoyed it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That’s what we thought! Oh duh!! That makes the most sense haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

If it’s not Voldemort and his gang I’ll be very surprised! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Perspective is definitely needed, thank you! I’m glad he came around and they’re all good now! Thank you so much!! Can’t wait for the next one! -Sam

Aaron Barlow

I also wonder if the spell stabilises the room. Imagine if the inside of the carriage was like a house, when the carriage banks does everyone and everything in the room fly to the other side? Lol

Marcus Cato

Someone out there voicing their intrusive Slytherin thoughts out loud! 😂

Aaron Barlow

Cho is a very pretty girl, all the more cute being Asian with a Scottish accent 😍

Martin7777

You haven't read the books, most of what you have written is wrong. But most importantly, why are you EXPLAINING FUTURE STUFF? STOP SPOILING THINGS

Matthew Maxon

I've read them at least 8x each. No there's not much in the way of spoilers. All that I have written is easily explained! 🖕

Matthew Maxon

Ron is the 6th boy. Ginny is child 7. Did you read the books?

Martin7777

No way you have read the books when you spell characters names that are written 1,000 times wrong. Mrs. Wheazly? lol "Crookshanks was owned by the Potters before" Nope. "Mr. Argus Filch the Caretaker is a poltergeist" Nope, filch's backstory is covered in the books, this is nonsense "Meaning he had a Time Turned at some point like Hermonie did" Nope

Danilo C

I don't think this is a spoiler since the movies never mention it, but in the books we learn that a few years after Tom Riddle (Voldemort) finished his education at Hogwarts, he applied to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher but Dumbledore, who at that point was already suspicious that Voldy was dabbling with the Dark Arts, refused to hire him and confronted him on the path the young man seemed to be taking. From that day until this point, Dumbledore was never able to keep the same teacher on that post for more than a school year. Let's see if he manages to keep them from now on 😉

Danilo C

Yeah, it's unfortunate that so much gets cut/changed. Unfortunately it's been the norm since PoA (the 3rd movie) that a LOT of interesting stuff gets cut, not all of it super necessary, but the butterfly effect makes the last movies a huge mess because of these small cuts. From this one, I miss the story of how Crouch Jr escapes from Azkaban because it's super interesting and it's supposed to be a big deal when someone manages to escape, but i get why they cut it out. It would mean adding at least 2 more characters (Winky and Mrs. Crouch) and probably a long scene explaining everything. They didn't even bother to explain how Sirius escaped in the 3rd movie, so I get that Crouch Jr doesn't need this extra lore. One thing I'm not sure I agree with you though is that most of the changes in this movie is the directors fault. The Dragon getting lose was probably his decision, but the lack of creatures in the maze... I bet that was down to the screenwriters. Some of those scenes, like the Sphinx scene, would have to be in the script and I doubt the director could just decide to cut that by himself.

Martin7777

It's a spoiler because it indicates something about the future teacher to take the role

MarisoL

"Try to befriend it?" was so funny to me and "You are not getting one of those" 😆 Also why can I smell Rita Skeeter's pungent perfume through the screen?
